TITLE: Switchers
GENRE: Horror, Mystery.
SUBGENRE: Alien.
FORMAT: 1-1.5 hours long
BASIC PROMPT: When a parasitic species of aliens arrive on Mobius and start possessing people in a small rural town, it will be up to a small group of heroes to stop them from spreading.
SPECIFIC POINTS/SCENES TO IMPLEMENT/ETC.: this movie won't need a huge cast, and due to uncanny valley effect of those possessed, we might not need to hire particularly skilled (and pricey) actors for the aliens, allowing for more budget for the main cast and other stuff as the aliens won't be seen outside of their hosts.
Cast: 5 main cast members, genders, names and species subject to change.
A police officer.
Small time crook.
Teacher at a local school.
Teenager.
Old man.
Innocent start: the movie starts during Friday night, most of the town is outside to look at a sudden meteor shower that had been announced the day before, among them the Teacher, trying to get a group of students interested but failing for the most part, one the kids claims to have seen a meteor fall into the nearby woods, the Teacher explains that isn't possible as they're burning up in the atmosphere.
In the police station, the Officer sits bored at her desk as the Crook talks her ear off from his cell, trying to convince her to let them loose so that they can both see the meteor shower, they'll return to the station immediately after! Scouts honor! The Officer doesn't buy it.
Strange behaviors: next week during class, the Teacher notes that a student is shifting his eyes left and right at random, thinking he's trying to see the homework of others she calls him out, the student tries to stand but falls sideways, one of his friends offers to take him to the nurse's office, the Teacher agrees and continues the class.
The Crook, having already gotten out, is trying to sell stolen stuff to people near an alley and having little luck, when a woman approaches and says she's looking for jewelry, the Crook notes her voice is slurred and believing she's drunk, he might scam her into paying extra and guides her into the alley where he keeps a box full of random stolen junk, only for the woman to suddenly throw herself at him, the Crook shoves her off and she runs off after hissing something at him, leaving him confused.
Crook: whoa lady! I ain't selling that type of merchandise!
Lady: Hissslpmessss!
Crook: wait... Did she say help?
The Officer's day is off to a horrible start as she and another officer get a call that someone heard a gunshot followed by a scream in a nearby house, heading in they find an Old Man, who the Officer recognizes as a retired officer, sitting on a couch crying his heart out, inconsolably pointing towards a bedroom, leaving her partner to get some statements from the Old Man, she goes to investigate the bedroom.
Inside she finds the lifeless body of a woman she recognizes as the Old Man's wife, a hole through her head and a handgun in hand, along with the words "it's inside" scratched in a mirror, from what the Old Man says, he and his wife were preparing to go to a restaurant for her birthday, and she had been in the room getting dressed while he got the car ready, which is when he heard the gunshot and rushed inside, finding her like that with the gun he had brought for self defense years ago.
Deeply disturbed, the Officer takes the Old Man to the station while leaving her partner to guard the scene while they wait for forensics to arrive, upon arrival they encounter the Crook and a Teenager arguing in front of the receptionist while another officer is talking on the phone and taking notes.
The Teen the Crook is arguing with is the daughter of the woman that had attacked him in the alley, the Crook had been trying to tell the receptionist about the event (skipping over his own illegal activity) when the Teen had appeared to report her mother hadn't returned since yesterday when she had gone to work at a local bar, but upon hearing that the Crook had seen her, starts demanding to know where she is.
Handing over the Old Man to another officer, the Officer tries to defuse the situation, trying to get a proper statement out of both the Crook and Teen, eventually succeeding before leaving them to start making a report on what she saw in the Old Man's house, idly noting that a passing officer has a cigarette burn on his mouth.
The Teacher is in the middle of her class when the speakers demand her presence in the principal's office, as she heads there she sees a police car parked in front of the school from a window.
Arriving she finds a pair of officers waiting along with the principal who asks her what exactly happened in her class that morning, as the janitor had smelled smoke and entered the nurse's office and found a half burnt pillow and a knocked over medicine cabinet with no signs of the two students from her class or the nurse.
Converging Paths:
Some police officers (the Officer included) are called in to aid in a search to try and find the missing children and the nurse after it was confirmed none of them went home or were seen since then, one group would search the town while another the woods.
The Crook, seeing that the sudden disappearance is distracting most of the officers, decides to do his good deed of the day and brings the Teen to the alley where he saw her mom to help her look, they find her quite close in another alley, crouched down in the middle of it.
The Teen starts to call out only for the Crook to cover her mouth, her attempts at questioning him stopped as he shifts her to the side, letting her see that her mother was apparently holding down a man with help from a hobo, pieces of a broken bottle nearby and the smell of smoke and booze in the air.
Unnerved, both of them continue to watch as they let go of the man, who stands up in a jittery way, as if drunken, his eyes shifting rapidly from side to side while his face remains blank save for some burn marks around his mouth and the occasional twitch, till he catches sight of the Crook and the Teen, then he points at them, the mother and the hobo turning to face them, their faces likewise blank, though the mother is the only one not to have burn marks on her mouth.
The Teen struggles out of the Crook's hold and approaches her mother hesitantly while the Crook looks around for something to defend themselves with, more than sure something very weird was going on.
The mother talks to the Teen, her voice a bit less slurred than before but the Teen notices that she isn't calling her by name and that some of her expressions are wrong, her face twitching whenever she tries to smile.
Mother: helloo~ sweeetie!
Teen: mom? What's happening?
Mother: n, nothing sweeetie~ come give me a hug.
Teen: why aren't you saying my name!?
Suddenly the mother tackles the Teen into the ground, the man approaching while the hobo retrieves a bottle and a lighter from his coat, the mother tries to hold the Teen's head still when she's struck in the side of her head by the Crook with a trashcan lid, the Teen getting up and starting to run alongside the Crook as the man roars something that the Crook notes sounds suspiciously like the word help.
Having finally been let out of the school, the Teacher is driving her way back home to forget about this day, only to screech to a halt as she almost runs over the Crook and the Teen as they come running out of an alley, in a panic, the Teen tries to tell her they're being followed by people who're acting strange, but knowing that nobody is going to believe them without proof, the Crook interrupts and tells the Teacher that they're being followed by a bunch of drug addicts, pointing to the alley, where the Teacher can see the approaching mother, man and hobo, she quickly let's them in and they drive to the police station as one of them throws a brick through the back window.
In the woods, the Officer is searching along with her partner, who tells her that forensics believe that it was a suicide, but that they did find something strange, apparently the woman had a burn mark on her tongue and they found fingerprints on the window, but they seemed too small to belong to the couple.
The Officer finds it strange, but decides not to think about it and focus on the search, occasionally radioing in to see if any of the teams found anything, a while of searching later they find some footprints and a trail like something was dragged along the ground, calling it in they go on ahead noting that they could see smoke rising from afar.
They eventually come across a shocking aight, both of the students crouching over the unconscious body of the nurse near a burning campfire, rushing in they demand to know what they're doing, one of them gets up and runs away holding a lighter while the other stays glaring at them, telling her partner to follow the other one the Officer approaches the remaining one.
The Officer tells the boy to step away from the nurse but he only glares at her and grabs something from his pocket before passing his hand through the fire to throw it at her, she quickly jumps to the side, noting that whatever he threw dissipated into green smoke after a few seconds, not taking anymore chances she rushes forwards and tackles him to the ground, eventually managing cuff him.
Her partner arrives dragging the other boy, also cuffed as the rest of the officers arrive, admittedly confused as to why the children are the ones cuffed, but an explanation later and both children are in the back of the police cruiser while the nurse is taken to the hospital, along the way they try and get either of them to talk, but only one says something before going silent for the rest of the drive.
Boy: you can't stop us, we're not going back, we'll never return to the dark again.
Arriving at the station, the Officer notices the Old Man walking out and stops to talk to him while her partner leads the boys inside, the Old Man tells her that he's noticed that some of the other officers are acting strange, but before they can continue talking the Teacher's car arrives, the Teacher and the Crook getting out while the Teen stays seated, nervously looking through the broken back window.
As the Teacher and Crook talk about what they just went through, an explosion bursts out of the police station, releasing green smoke over the street, while they're all coughing police officers start walking out of the station, aiming their guns at them and telling them to get into the station, as the Officer demands to know what is happening the Crook tells her this is what he was talking about, something is happening to people and making them act strange.
Before anything else can happen the Teacher's car starts, rushing forwards and runs over some of the officers, the rest scattering to avoid it, the Teen quickly tells everyone to get in as more explosions of green smoke and regular smoke can be seen all over the town, people running around in a panic, the Teacher tells the Teen to head to the school as it will be empty of people due to the investigation.
Enemy revealed: arriving at the school they quickly rush in, locking themselves in inside of the science classroom, as they debate what the hell is happening to people the Teen reveals a strange green egg the size of a pebble, telling them that it was inside of the brick that was thrown into the car back in the alley, the Teacher procures a glass jar and stores the egg inside before starting to do some tests.
As she's doing that, the others get to talking about the people, quickly seeing that they all had something in common, burn marks either inside their mouth or around them, a quick check reveals them all to have none.
The Teacher then calls everyone over, telling them that while a school doesn't have anything particularly advanced, she was able to discover some things, whatever is inside the egg responds to heat, wriggling about inside when it detects heat and going dormant when it's cold, and a simple test with a flashlight reveals it to be some kind of worm, but that's about all she could find out.
Frustrated, they all wonder what they should do next when they hear footsteps and quiet down, the Teacher whispering that nobody should be here, as the police had even forbidden the janitor from cleaning in case there was evidence, as the door is unlocked and the janitor walks in, the Old Man notices he has burn marks on his mouth and strikes him over the head with a microscope, the Officer quickly cuffing him and they use some wires to tie him to a chair.
They spend a minutes interrogating him, from normal questions to threats before the janitor simply laughs at them, telling them they're too late to stop them, the town will be theirs soon, as will their bodies, and they will not let anyone stop them, they will not return to the dark, no matter what.
The janitor then releases a screech, causing everyone to cover their ears in pain before the Crook takes the gun from the Officer and shoots him in the head, shutting him up, as the Officer is about to berate the Crook, the Teacher points to the corpse, seeing that same green smoke coming out of the wound as it dissipates, the Teen wondering aloud if that means that the worms are inside of people as they suddenly hear the sound of windows being broken.
Figuring that the screech must have been a call to the others they quickly scramble, the Officer shooting down people as they retreat, noting that they all released the same smoke and died regardless of where they were shot.
Once in the parking lot they all run for the road, the Crook breaking into a random parked car and hotwiring it as they all get on, the Crook rides them over to the edge of town where he has a hideout that he uses to hide his goods, a chill runs over them all when they see police officers herding people into houses or buildings, a radio broadcast listing local places where people should take refuge in while the police investigate these sudden terror attacks, also saying there would be medical staff from the local hospital there.
Sacrifice: now in the hideout, the Teacher says they need to know more about these things, they know they can die but not what they are or where they came from, which is when the Crook reminds them that the Teen's mother had been asking for help, this along with the strange eye movement and the fact the wife of the Old Man had managed to take her own life while leaving a message means that people were able to resist whatever these things were, at least at first.
The Old Man then snatches the sample jar off of the Teacher and sits down on a nearby chair, telling them that they'll have to ask the damn things directly then, when asked what he means he answers that if his wife had managed to leave a message, then there's a chance he could learn something and tell them about it, the Crook tells him he's crazy, but that it's their best bet, as the radio had also said that the "terrorists" had stolen cars and used them to block all the exits of the town, they have no way of getting out and a test of phones reveals no signal.
The Crook then offers to do so himself, but the Old Man replies that he and the others had a full life to live, while he himself was old, he didn't have that many years left anyway, with a somber air, they tie the Old Man up and put the egg in his mouth, the Crook lighting a cigarette and throwing it into his mouth, causing the egg to hatch in a small puff of green smoke that surrounds them all.
As the Old Man is possessed, he tells them that he could see what the worms are, they're aliens, parasites that take over bodies and learned to mimic them to then infest others to spread themselves, completely replacing the nervous system through the brain, their home planet had been primitive and extremely hot, not having yet developed intelligent life before an asteroid had destroyed it, sending a lucky egg pod flying alongside a chunk of the planet, along the way the pod was encased in multiple layers of rock and molten metal, protecting it from they void, then, they had been attracted by the gravity of Mobius, and crashed into the woods, there, one of the student of the Teacher, along with some others had decided to camp, and the child found the pod and brought it back to camp, believing it to be a mere rock.
The others had joked around, someone eventually revealing they had smokes, they joked around till the pod fell into the fire by accident, releasing the eggs and infesting the children.
It was glorious to the parasites, their prey back home were primitive, nothing more than animals, this was the first time they had encountered an intelligent species, their minds were expanded, no longer would they simply mimic drooling savages, now? Now they would be the dominant species! And this planet didn't even have their natural predators! But there was one issue, the oxygen in the air was toxic to them, dissolving their bodies upon contact, hence why they tried to put their eggs inside of their new hosts, that first encounter had wasted multiple eggs, but not all had hatched, so as they took over the bodies and learned how to act like them, they started to plan, they didn't have the numbers to take over the planet, but if they could take over the town, they could simply wait till they matured enough to produce their own eggs, then spread all throughout the planet, all they needed was a bit of fire to mimic the heat of their planet a little bit, and until then they would be no different from the rest of the inhabitants.
But they had been sloppy in their excitement, leading them to be discovered, so now they would take over the authorities and gather the people into select locations where they had planted the remaining eggs, infest them, and then use their accumulated knowledge to fake a terrorist attack by burning down most of the town, sacrificing some of their newly hatched compatriots sure, but the survivors would have all the protection they need from the government to mature till they could produce their own eggs, and by that point they would have traveled so far they could infest huge chunks of the planet at once without arousing suspicion.
As the others stand in horror at what they just heard, the Old Man leaves them with the last weakness of the parasites, their bond is permanent, and in infesting, they gain the same weaknesses as their hosts, including fire, it can help them birth, but it can also kill them as easily as it kills all life.
And as the last of his free will gets eroded, the Officer shoots the Old Man in the head to stop the parasite from summoning the rest, then sits down with her head in her hands while the Teacher, Crook and Teen stand by, all trying to think of ways to use their new knowledge.
Yet as the minutes pass without answer it's the Teacher that steps up, it's callous and cruel, but if these things are planning to lock people up and burn them as a false terror attack, then maybe the only answer is to trigger those traps early, lock the aliens along with the remaining people and burn them all, the Crook and Teen object, but the Officer agrees with the Teacher, they'll have no real way of knowing who is infested after they had enough time to adapt to their bodies, and if they leave even one alive? Then all their efforts will have been for nothing, because that parasite will just go to ground till it's so far away they won't notice till they're already conquered the world.
A deep silence overtakes the group as they all suddenly understand the stakes, the parasites have to be stopped here, or there will be no other chances, the aliens dissolve into nothing upon death, and they just used their only egg, so they no longer have any way to prove they exist.
The path to hell: checking the radio again, the remaining four look at a map provided by the Crook, the designated shelters are in the north, west and east sides of the town, and they're in the south, they'll have to split off of they want to set off the traps early, the west shelter is the smallest and closest, so the Teacher volunteers to go on foot while the others drive to the east one, which is the biggest, and drop the Officer and Teen there while the Crook rushes to the north one.
Arriving at a dance hall, the Teacher reminiscences about her dream, remembering that this place had once been used to hold a science fair where she had failed to gain any price as a child, and now she's going to burn it down along with any chance of being anything other than a criminal.
Hiding in an alley, she waits till all people in the area had entered and locks the front and back doors, before lighting up the gas canisters that the infested had set up, sending the whole place up in flames, then with an apology, heads towards the east side to aid the Officer and Teen.
The Officer and Teen leave the car in front of a huge warehouse, moving quickly they manage to lock most of the doors before the infested can get out, but the front doors closes slowly, alerting those inside, thinking quickly the Officer had the Teen spill gasoline in front of the entrance to create a firey barrier while she stands on the other side of it, shooting down anyone who tries to cross it, some go down in green smoke, others don't, but eventually, the doors close, with the Officer left feeling numb as they stare at the corpses of those they had once protected, the hand holding the gun shaking till the Teen gently takes it from them.
The Crook drives as fast as possible towards the town hall, praying that he makes it, but his heart sinks upon seeing the infested closing the doors, knowing he has to act fast he drives straight for them and jumps out of the car, rolling as the car crashes into the group, killing most of them but leaving two police officers left, they open fire but can't appear to aim well, the Crook quickly rushes them while holding a knife, managing to stab one before being tackled by the other, managing to stab them multiple times but is shot in the process.
With the last of his strength he grabs the gun and shoots the gas canisters, dying in the process.
Dawn of a new Era: as the Teacher arrives she watches as the town burns in the distance, the traps in the shelters causing the fire to spread to every corner, from schools to the hospital, she could almost swear she saw the nurse glaring at her from a burning window.
Turning the corner she stops cold, her already over stressed mind failing to comprehend what she's seeing as she takes a few steps forward, ending up right next to the still body of the Officer, laying in a puddle of blood.
Hearing footsteps, she turns slightly and locks eyes with the Teen, pointing a gun at her.
Teacher: how? We checked?
Teen: simple, the smoke isn't just us dissolving, it also signals us to hatch, no fire needed!
Teacher: ... The brick
Teen: yup! It actually had two eggs.
So saying, the Teen shoots the Teacher before wiping the gun and placing it in the hands of the Officer and starting to walk out of town, continuing her explanation as she walks along the road.
Teen: you see, the smoke is quite versatile, in our planet, it serves a a sort of conduit for our thoughts, letting the newborns absorb our knowledge easier! So when I was born in the car, the smoke cloud let me learn everything the ones in the cops had learnt, skipping the uncanny valley effect!
Teen: the hardest part was keeping the Old Man from spilling the bean, but between me and the newborn knowing the plan, we managed to let him know just what we wanted, see the terror attack needed culprits, and non infested ones, and you guys fit the bill oh so well! So I set up and false murder suicide and made sure my buddies would destroy all records of this girl in the town, and now I'm free to spread my wings.
Teen: no more animals, no more struggle for survival, now? Now we're the smart ones and we're never going back to the darkness of primitive hosts.
The last scene is of the Teen smiling as a city becomes visible in the distance.
