I do always, always love a sea plane. And they are ALSO always a good ship for adventures to be centered around. A janky, janky looking protagonist ship that can land and do science and get in trouble and noodle along fast enough.

(not to say that starships are cheap to build-on the contrary, I imagine they are enormously expensive in absolute terms-simply that it's operating budget more than construction budget that limits how many Starships one can support in service at any one time.)

In fairness the number of times they refitted or rebuilt the original Enterprise is definitely a data-point you could use to support this idea.

Regardless:
(1) The D6 and D7 are not that big in this quest.
(2) The D7 is not considered to be that size by most Star Trek fans, who have studied this at exhaustively greater length than you or I.
(3) It is not stated to be this size in any licensed Star Trek media.

Another point for the chemistry, I want to again emphasize that sometimes in Star Trek being a military ship means dealing with Space Bullshit. Some Space Bullshit is vulnerable to nadion particles and antimatter and deflector dishes. But some is alive and requires specialized chemicals. And that's why we want specialist science labs.

Been thinking of making a anti Borg Ship. Check out my design.

It warps in to zero, activates thrusters and spins really fast. Then hitting the cube.
