You're about to insist, to wheedle and pry in the nonchalant way you do, caring without caring - but then you stop. You have the weirdest sense that Yuhara actually means what she says, about wanting to be your friend. Talking with Yuhara, even one on one, feels a lot like small talk at a party – there's a constant reserve, a window between herself and the rest of the world. Perhaps it's just the witchlight, but here and now you feel as though she's cracked that window a bit. And through that crack, she is begging you not to force it open any further.
So you don't. "Okay, thanks. Let's drop it," you say instead, and you can see the tension drain from her shoulders. "Uh...you're doing an awful lot of work for the student council. Even for having two members out sick."
"I asked for more work on the sports festival," Yuhara says. "I want to be able to point to it when I campaign for president."
"You're already thinking about that?"
"I would like to be the first second-year student council president at Hiyari," Yuhara says, matter of factly. "That means I need to start preparing now."
You wave her words off. "Sounds like too much effort. Very on brand for you though." A beat as you chew over things. "It's only few weeks until the festival, so I guess I could pitch in as long as other council members are incapacitated."
"I would be happy to be able to count on your help," Yuhara says, and with that the window slides closed again. But it does open – you've seen it – and you have the feeling that she'll crack it again before too long. For now, you'll just have to be content with that.
