[X] Remain silent regarding Anna; meet with Zamoyski – after speaking with Sierotka – regarding his potential marriage into the Radziwiłłowie.

laying the groundwork for a necessary backstop if and when some of Zamoyski's faction of Crownlander reformers and petty lordlings get it into their heads to try and Do Something about Matthias winning, if the Hasburgs do win the election.

the two-to-one margin has made me comfortable with a slightly earlier close!

[X] Repent at the altar of the Virgin Mary, Mother of Poland, until the 7th, for such an impure impulse in front of a dignified lady

XXXVII. November 7, 1575. Warszawa, Polish Crownlands.
You are humming. Vibrating, perhaps, but not shaking. An opening to deliver a speech has come. You are emerging, appearing from the crowds of senators and lords high and low and into the clearing where the speakers go. You move slowly, trying not to be clumsy or slip into the Sejm camp's mud with your one leg. Every arm-straining step forward on your crutches count; even if men wouldn't laugh in your face were you to stumble – how could they? – you must show yourself to be as strong as ever. A hush slides like a wave over the crowd as you make your way to the center, spreading front-to-back. The Sejm Marshal Sienicki, though a Piast, nods to you with respect, and rises from his seat; the other seated ministers and clergymen and whoever else had the opportunity to obtain a chair stand, too. Your supporters begin to applaud, hailing Stanisław "Ajax," while your detractors merely clap.

In, out. You have spent the past three days watching the ebb and flow of the Sejm in relative silence, taking notes by day and forming a skeleton for your speech by night. The rhetorical lines of both factions have changed very little. Everything should go according to plan.

"My lords," you yell out, placing yourself in the lower register of your voice, trying to boom. "Before liberty and our God do we stand here today, the first day of the exercising of our inviolable and sacred rites to the election of the king!" Who can't cheer to that?

You recall your notes on how to begin after this little preamble:

[] With a story of the Romans (Rolman picks).

[] With a story of the Romans (write-in).

[] With a story from the Book (Rolman picks).

[] With a story from the Book (write-in).

[] No need for flair – speak of the practicalities straightforwardly.

[X] With a story of the Romans (Rolman picks).

Not too sure what to write in, but we've already made allusions to Roman emperors before regarding Matthias.

[X] With a story of the Romans (Rolman picks).

Knowledge of the classics, especially Rome was very cherished and respected. When performing a speech, adding some Cicero or any other Roman story can only benefit the whole thing. Indeed, many Sarmatians saw themselves as descendants of Romans and the Commonwealth as a modern Rome with its republican traditions.

I think this is a good opportunity to reframe the election around Matthew's inexperience relative to Bathory.

[X] With a story of the Romans. Speak of how the Romans were once a young nation and greatly underestimated, of how their youth helped drive their triumphs against the elder nations. Connect this story to Matthias and turn the accusation of inexperience into the promise of potential, and give Bathory's experience an ominous patina of Roman stagnancy and decay. Bring it all into the present with a reminder of our plans to defy stagnancy and ward off decay with the youth, vigor and opportunity that Matthias will bring us.

I mean in terms of quoting the canon of the Renaissance I really don't think any Classical reference has the immediate snap of comparing Stephen Bathory and Mattheus to King Saul and King David.

I'm open to it. What's your vision?
Something like this?

[X] Write-In: Choose from the stories of Saul and David in the Good Book, highlighting how God and Israel chose the obscure youth to become favored over seasoned Saul and anointed king instead of the sons of Saul, the vitality and bravery of youth making the sling deadlier than the sword, and the passion and artfulness of youth making the sweet murmur of the harp louder than the war drum. And how ultimately, God did not let prosper the attempted tyranny of once-worthy Saul nor any of David, but only that which was needed for the kingdom of Israel and that which made it a covenant between the tribes and a golden age of God's love and holy purpose.

I appreciate how you're reframing the question around Matt's inexperience and also addressing the concerns of tyranny raised by our opposing camp, so I'm in! No one present can doubt Stan's piety, either.
