The Enemy Within (WHF Witch Hunter Quest)

[X] Mercenaries
A man who fights for nothing more than gold will do anything if it means increasing his share thereof, and it was Markus' assumption of shared zeal and principle that blinded him to treacherous intent. Duty, honour and ideals can be trusted, mere professionalism or greed cannot.

Something something in times of peace despoiled by them and in times of war by your enemies, battles without bloodshed and victories without honor something

Lust for money is the root of all- well, most- evils

Yeah, I definitely saw that coming. Shame, he was a fun character. But twenty thousand gold is twenty thousand gold.

[X] Mercenaries

While blaming himself feels very on brand for our broody witch hunter, I'd rather not pile more on him at the moment.

I also want to say that while reacting to these events by developing a loathing of sellswords that would have a 15th century Florentine humanist nod approvingly is not the healthiest coping mechanism, I don't think reacting to an unexpected betrayal from someone you fought alongside and had the beginnings of a friendship (possibly more than friendship) with by "Obviously it was all because of me, my failings and my flaws, time to brood long into the night about my own inadequacies", woooof.

Sometimes you trust somebody and they turn out to be a right bastard, it's not necessarily a personal failing and something to beat yourself up over.

the fun thing about Sigmar being Conan-Jesus is that Markus von Bruner gets both Catholic Guilt and self-righteous Puritan Sobriety :V , and so therefore Markus must atone for his sins in failing to use the powers of perception and forethought his Hero-God gave him

Markus already beats himself up a lot, I don't really think more of that is healthy even in his line of work where self-critique is necessary to keep his judgement clear.

Phillipe was a charming fellow who was the first person to show Markus any form of human warmth in years. It was only natural that he was caught off guard by someone he thought called him friend. That isn't weakness, but a sign that no matter what Markus says, he's more man than he is a symbol.

The lesson to take away here, I think, is that he shouldn't assume everyone is animated by the same motivations he's moved by. Gold and fortune is its own faith.

Alas for our hero who thought he was in a party, but was truly the protagonist of a quest

Well, that's a big oof. I wonder even if we did choose the "Claim the Inheritance", will Philippe still turn on Witch Hunter Markus for the money?

[X] Foreigners

Sigmar founded this Empire for a reason - to distinguish between those of the Empire, and those from without. We scorn his wisdom by consorting with suspicious foreign sorts at both spiritual and physical peril, mark my words.

Probably, yeah, and possibly with even less hesitation—there's no real indication that Philippe is the sort of person who'd take the money because he thought he could do good with it, he's just a really charming mercenary who really wants that twenty thousand. The moment of doom came from the specific unintended consequences of selecting Phillippe + investigating the screams which led to us discovering the inheritance.

This choice seems both appropriate and least likely to get us in trouble in the near-to-medium future.

A man answers to Sigmar in the end and himself alone before that. Markus could have avoided this by paying more attention, thinking outside his own narrow perspective, doing more and being better. Unflinching self-critique is the only way to improve.
