A Destiny in Bronze (Bronze Age Fantasy)

If you count the two other votes for male only then there is a majority for being attracted to men. Maybe a male preferring biromantic or a heterosexual biromantic? Anyways

A fair number of people seemed to strongly prefer either both or neither and would have voted for the other one of those over only men, so this seems off for reflecting the desires of the majority.

[X][Adventure] South, beyond the lands of Zepa. This would be a long and dangerous trip but not insane. You will have to pass through the Foothills or through the band of swampland that has been claimed by the Sea. Apparently, you can find a variety of interesting creatures here and potentially unclaimed relics. You have been told to not enter certain areas and given a few potential leads for manageable opponents. As well as demons, never forget demons! Danger Rating: Varies, the journey itself is a 5. Some places are certain death (10), others may be as low as 2.

[X][Adventure] Underground. Many strange things lurk beneath the earth. You know the Bnaimokt make extensive use of tunnels to rapidly travel, but they only do so when heavily pressed, such as when they fled your grandfather at Ibleam when they first attacked in force. You are more likely to find a variety of strange wildlife, goblins, strange insect monsters, and perhaps a minor demon or two. Danger Rating: 2, but escalating as you go deeper.

Grandpa is giving general advice for other places and very specific advice for the deep South. He knows there's something worth seeing/getting there, probably a lost relic. With his guidance we can avoid the death zones and get back with a nice treasure.

Zana's been established as pretty conservative by the standards of her society, as well as being a devout believer in El-ism (is that what you'd call the religion?). The church (and through it, El) is pretty clear that making babies is a religious duty expected of all capable believers, so in that sense at least I think it would check out for there to be a vague background radiation of "uh I guess I'm supposed to lay with men?" because that's what all the authority figures up to and including Very Real and Powerful God told her to do.

But she's also apparently not even (fully?) human and is getting special protagonist treatment where she gets direct tutoring/special audiences with witches and 10 foot tall purple wizard grandpa despite still being a teenager. So it's not like finding a husband and settling down is really her arc here. Developing emotional attachments to all these fragile squishy humans would be sensible, but I like the idea of Zana only being interest in fluid exchange when it's in the context of getting covered in the blood and viscera of our Very Real and Powerful God's enemies. With the cultural baggage of "I guess men, because God said so, but honestly that's just an academic religious duty not something I'm actually into."

It had just been an idle musing. You had encountered Bnaimont in significant number, didn't especially fear them, and thought good might be done there. You hadn't expected Ruth's reaction.

Of standing before something called a god and it's heretical priest.
Of standing before something called a god and its heretical priest.

A shedim is a lesser demon, you know. The demons you had slain likely counted as this, as you understand such matters. You imagine the sea demon squatting on the ruins of Zepath is something more... and what destroyed Tanaach several centuries ago to be something even more terrible.

A shedim was a terrible foe for a well prepared and Blooded force, but not an impossible one. They varied significantly in size, shape, intelligence, and mystical gifts. Some scream within the minds of their victims, paralyzing in the agony of it. Some control flame. Some are mounds of tentacles, ever regenerating (called zvivs by your people) and others resemble more familiar things.
Not technically a typo, but the usual singular form of 'shedim' is shed or shedu.

(And this is 100% my personal taste, but making it be "zvivu/zvivim" instead feels better to me because it kind of turns it into something akin to the linguistic subtext of the *zamzummim* - "zamzumm" was the Babylonian(?) onomatopoeia for a murmuring or whispering sound, so the priests who communed with the dead were essentially being called "the whisperers".

In this case, it would become an implied idea of naming the demons after the sound of their tendrils rasping together and sliding along the ground: zvivivivivivivi...!)

But you do take note of a subtle change you have notice over the years.

[][Adventure] South, beyond the lands of Zepa. This would be a long and dangerous trip but not insane. Apparently, you can find a variety of interesting creatures here and potentially unclaimed relics. "South," you suggest. "We're certain to find something and it isn't quite so dangerous as most think, so long as we're careful."

Ruth nods her head after a minute.

"I've not been down that way too often. But it really isn't that terrible. Especially past the swamps. We just need to avoid Tanaach and Zepath, and try not to stray too close to Bnaimokt in the east."

The plan is set in motion. Before you go, though, you have one last visit to your grandfather to make...

His sanctum is different today. Most often it is a small forest, one that is almost claustrophobic to you. You don't like your mystical senses being "turned off." A part of you had gotten used to simply knowing that a rock was underneath your foot, to naturally shifting around obstacles, to occasionally seeing a glimpse of what is to come. That is all gone here, in this place, ostensibly for your own protection.

The sky is filled with stars and the moon looms high in the sky. That is normal here, no matter the time outside. On rare occasions it will be day, most often noon. Sometimes dawn. The arrangements have a meaning behind them you are certain. You just don't understand them, not entirely.

What is not normal is the massive creature standing outside your grandfather's forge. At first you thought it a bear that he had tamed, but that is not it. It is... a dog. A stupendously massive one. A single paw is larger than your head and it stands taller than you. It sniffs at you and lets out a low growl. You feel the reverberation of it in the earth, in your chest, and it lets loose a single large whoof. A stark terror grabs hold of you... and then fades away almost as quickly.

You don't think this dog likes you.

"Snarls," you hear your grandfather command. "She's not an enemy."

Instantly, the massive dog calms himself. You still get the distinct impression that he doesn't like you. But he is not hostile any longer.

"My apologies. I had not been expecting you today," your grandfather says. "He was keeping me company as I worked."

He motions for you to follow him into the forge. Typically, his forge is neatly organized, every tool neatly put away and the forge fire dead. Now? The fire roars and his tools, while not disorganized, are clearly put in place. You have seen him work his craft on only very rare occasions, and only in limited amounts. He had offered to teach you more but you had lacked the interest to pursue it.

The roof of his forge had small holes placed in it. You had thought it something to do with the stars and now you see that confirmed. The light from the stars shines through these holes... and it congeals. You don't know of another word to describe it. At some point, it shifts and changes, into a physical substance that you can reach out and touch. Your grandfather motions you to wait a moment.

"Very precise part, this, than I can take a break."

He raises a hammer you haven't seen before. It looks much like any other hammer you've seen... except for the voice coming from it. The hammer is chanting in time with the blows on the hammer. Your grandfather is as well, though each of them are saying different things. You don't really know what they're saying. It's in the priestly tongue, of which you only know a smattering.

The chanting continues for a time. And then your grandfather places the hammer down, reaches out and grasps the glowing hot bronze in his hands. He shows no discomfort at this as he forcefully shapes it with his hands. You understand that bronze smithing typically requires molds, but it seems your grandfather doesn't really do things like that?

He speaks as he finishes.

"Working it directly, with your hands, allows for a closer connection with it. The closer the connection, the more I can put of myself in it, the more I can change it in unnatural ways. This applies to more than metals. It applies to everything. It is a lesson you must learn well. Now, why have you come? I understand that you and the other girl are going to try your hand at adventuring, or perhaps monster hunting. Surely you have more important things to do than listen to the ramblings of an old man?"

He might be old but he certainly doesn't look it.

"I came for suggestions. We head south and I would like to know of possible destinations."

Your grandfather grins at this.

"Good. Good! You have many opportunities before you! Wealth, glory, lost secrets, all of these are available... depending on the destination, and your skill. Now, listen closely..."

[] "The first possibility lay in the Lands of Zepa. Yes, it is an El-cursed swamp, and danger is plenty here. Yet to the north and west of Tanaach lay a cavern. It was sealed in ancient days by Zepa, and only those of his lineage may enter. I entered it once in my youth, and made accord with the creature that lay within. Do not approach the beast, unless you lack choice, for it is pitiable and in this lay danger. I will reward you handsomely for anything you discover within the ruins. Gold and silver for much of it, especially for the idols that lay within, and more than mundane items I will repay in kind. Do not tarry overly long for the cavern is near the sea. This nearness is why I do not approach it myself, you are much less noticeable." (Danger: Low to Extreme, Profitability: High, Glory: Low to None, Secrets: Some)

[] "Another possibility lay far to the south. Once you go beyond the swamps, the greatest danger passes, and you might find an arid land. These lands extend outside of Zepa's traditional claim, and is not quite desert. In a cave, there lives a great hydra called the Titan of Belus. It's gaze turns men to stone. Within it will lay a matana. I will well reward you for it. There are likely many other treasures within the cave, claim what you like from it, though I ask to inspect any interesting pieces." (Danger: High, Profitability: Medium to High, Glory: High, Secrets: Few)

[] "Beyond even the Titan, the lands turn wet and temperate. Many strange monsters may be found here. Most dangerous is the Lammu, a massive beast spawned from the sea. It has the body of a serpent, with the mane and claws of a lion. It controls water, so try to fight it away from any large sources. I will pay for any useful pieces you bring." (Danger: Very High, Profitability: Low to High, Glory: Very High, Secrets: None to Few)

[] "Beyond the Titan, and to the east, near to where the Mountains extend south, you might find rocs. These creatures are not entirely without danger, but an individual should prove little difficulty to a band of trained Blooded warriors with bows. Their nests contain significant amounts of gold and I will pay for any eggs you might bring, as well as any meat you manage to preserve." (Danger: Medium, Profitability: Low to Extremely High, Glory: Medium, Tasty: Yes, Secrets: None)

[] "I do not speak of this lightly. It is said that the lands of King Amoq, lord of all giants, lay to the distant south. You will not return for a year or more if you go, and the danger is greater than any other, save disturbing what lay north-west of Tanaach... and perhaps, greater than that. Yet these giants contain fine gems that make magnificent sacrifices to El. Sacrifice these as quickly as you may, do not keep them from the altar. If you go here, only cunning and piety will win the day, yet any trophies you return with..." (Danger: Extreme to Suicide, Profitability: Low, Glory: High to Extreme, Secrets: Some to Many)

I think I prefer looking for secrets.

I think we want some glory, and the danger here is at least predictable.

Bear in mind that it's not just us on the case but a team of people who are less solid than we are, otherwise I'd go for the last one for the secrets. For this one… there's something I like about the idea of bringing their eggs back. Can they be domesticated??

Secrets might be appealing to us, but like Kipeci pointed out we do have other people with us, so we should probably have at least some glory and/or profit, and not go for the riskiest available option...

That leaves the Lammu, the titan, and the rocs. Of those, the titan has the best chance of secrets.

"Certainly, I considered it myself at your age. My mentor convinced me otherwise. They are vicious and dangerous beasts, smart and difficult to contain. They eat voraciously when young, and only meat. Any actions it takes will, legally, be as if you did it. So if it kills someone..."

My main concern is that the Titan of Belus sounds... well, if I'm honest? I'm not sure how the giants could possibly be more dangerous than taking a many-headed behemoth which breathes poison and then also adding on "if you look in its direction, you are instantaneously killed."

We might be able to survive, but I'm pretty sure that we'd be returning alone.

I mean, the option you're picking is explicitly potentially more dangerous than that. The rocs are probably the best 'manageable danger' option if you think the Titan of Belus is biting off more than we can chew.

The other thing is that the actual goal for this mission for everyone but us is Glory. So any mission without that is worthless to them and likely to breed resentment if they even go along with it at all.

"The trip is much longer, the dangers greater, and there are many giants. They are not simple brutes; they work metal and have some skill in sorcery. If you alert them to your presence, and do not have a means of escape, you will die unless El smiles greatly upon you. The Titan of Belus may be slain if you are clever and find a way to avoid its gaze."

The roc expedition is... okay, I can see the appeal in it as a direct recreation of what actual premodern cultures would find interesting and exciting and worth mountain an expedition over: "There's big weird birds across the hills, let's go hunt them and bring back trophies". Assuming that our grandfather isn't alone in finding their meat and eggs to be delicacies, we're essentially doing colonial American mountain man business, minus the incipient genocide (and hopefully the ecological devastation.)

However, it can't help but feel trifling compared to the other choices on offer.

If it comes to it, I may well vote for the Titan over the rocs, especially given that the author has vouched for it being something that's not going to autokill the expedition.

Although...

@paebel. Are there any interesting sights to see and/or people to bump into on the way to and from the rocs' valley?

And while I'm at it: are King Amoq and the giants of the south something we knew of before our grandfather mentioned them here?

The Titan has the most glory without being suicidal, which is critical to actually getting our friends on board and satisfied. If we were going alone I'd go for something with more secrets, but alas we need glory instead, and the Titan still has some potential for secrets in its loot. Maybe a smaller expedition/party not focused on glory can hit a destination with more secrets later?

if the Titan is too dangerous then the roc hunt is a good intro level adventure, so I'll vote for that too, but the Titan is more impressive so I think it's my first preference.

Edit: Alright, no pain no gain, narrowing down to just the Titan

Basic plan is to roll some dice on possible encounters, each option has different possibilities, some shared with others. So yes, you might find something odd.

The giants of King Amoq were a known thing to you, but you understood them to be destroyed, at least when you consider it. By your grandfather, when Zepath still stood. You ask him about this:

"I destroyed a small outpost and liberated the people that lived there. I did not proceed into the heart of those lands. The story has changed over time, the deed made greater.

Even now, I would hesitate to battle Amoq, especially within its own lands. Guile and faith will be your greatest tool."
