Try to survive the Winter: A planquest in Fantasy Colonial America

-[X][Colonists] Invite them in, hiding the supernatural in Union…until the ship leaves.
On another note, even we decide we want to kill the Huntsman, I have to strongly object to using this sort of trickery on people who are kin to those already living in Union. We know from omake knowledge that they desperately want to see the family members among them who are still living. Furthermore, outright tricking them like this is going to breed resentment.

Better to let them reunite now and use that as a launch point to ease them into Union.

aren't they still going to visit there kin in my plan?
-[X][Colonists] Make them visit Union and their kin before they make a choice.
--[X] But keep the supernatural in Union hidden for now. After they have spent some time with their thought-lost kin, then we can decide how to hopefully ease them into things.

I mean I geneiuanly don't think there really a differnce between these 2 since we are allowing them to visit in both plans and inviting them so I can change it to ours if people are hung about it. actuall just gonna change it since I don't wa tto aruge about anotehr point.

Not sure what other plants from the Old World we would need but I'm sure there's some.
On the top of my head:
  • Seeds for fruit trees like apples, cherries, peaches, etc... Thanks to our magic soil we could make some absolutely impressive orchards
  • Canola and Olives for oil production.
  • Hops and Grapes for alcohol production
  • Flax and hemp for cloth
  • Vegetables like lettuce, garlic, eggplants, onions, cabbages, leeks, peas, turnips... For extra nutrition and more flavor.
Besides that, we would also benefit from these domestic animals a lot.
  • Poultry like chickens, geese, and ducks for eggs and meat (turkeys are great for meat but so-so for eggs)
  • Sheep and Goats for milk, meat, and wool
  • Pigs for meat
  • Cows for milk, leather, meat, and utility
  • Donkeys and horses for transportation and utility
  • Ferrets for hunting
  • Honeybees for honey
We should also try to get dogs and rabbits, but we can find those in North America

I feel like ur first and second paragraph are contradicting each other? if old shadows is saying it won't arouse suspicious against us and doesn't' prove it does anything sinister but then u says this will arouse suspicious against us it so obvious we killed him apparently then it is arousing suspicious?
Because there's a difference between arousing the Huntsman's suspicions that we might be evil wizards and arousing the suspicions of some random European who knows only what he's heard from indirect reports that we're perfectly ordinary colonists who murdered a Huntsman.

Because "a Huntsman went to check out a village and he mysteriously disappeared and the villagers swear up and down he was eaten by a bear" is probably a story they've seen and heard before. And the punchline is usually "surprise surprise, they murdered him in his sleep or something." From the point of view of an outside investigator learning the broad outlines of our cover story here, it would be basically irrelevant whether there are monsters in the woods around the settlement or not. The grounds to suspect us is still the same.

Ultimately, it kinda seems like trying to both "keep the Dual Monarchy out of Union" and "trade with the Old World" by killing the huntsmen but letting the merchant go is a poor plan.
Yeah. This.

Okay, so I'm gonna try and get an omake out for question duty. There's just one problem: It needs names and I suck at names. I'd prefer a French and an Algonquin one if possible, with some extras as backups preferred. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I suppose I could just try for name generators, but I'd like some help with that. The context would be a group of Wildsmen exploring a new path in the Wilds.

That multipart omake I mentioned earlier is fighting me tooth and nail, so I wrote this omake instead. I was hoping for a quick yet good omake but it kinda got away from me.

Family Reunion
Mary Smith aka Maria Sanchez POV

Mary was of two minds when it came to planting Razorweed. On the one hand the work was unpleasant, and there was no real way to handle the stuff without getting cut. On the other, said plants had been instrumental in saving many lives, including those of her family.

"It's not like I'm unused to blood and pain", she thought to herself wryly. Indeed, Father's whip had extracted plenty of both from her before she ran away. At least the vines offered something in return for the pain they caused. John would never have survived his fever without that Razorweed infusion. Her bastard of a father just considered it his rightful due, and to hell with anyone who said differently.

"Excuse, me, Mary", her thoughts were interrupted by Adeleke. There was always a certain awkwardness in her interactions with many of the Unchained, more than experienced by other Europeans in Union. She supposed that her features brought back too many unpleasant memories, although things got a bit better once Abeni caught a glimpse of her scars.

"The trade ship has arrived", ah, good, hopefully they have livestock. Wait, why is Adeleke telling her this? She's not on the Council.

"A man claiming to be your brother is onboard asking for you". Maria's heart skipped a beat. How had her family managed to find her in this backwater? She had covered her tracks so well. Maria tried to calm herself, muttering under her breath "Focus, Maria, Focus. If doesn't matter how you were found. What matters is which brother it is". Fernando she could handle, but Adán?

"W-which one?", Maria forced the words from her lips. "He identified himself as Brother Fernando Sanchez of the Society of Jesus". The tension left her body. Adán was Father's creature, cruelty and all, but Fernando was his own man. Their hatred was both deep seated and quite mutual. That's probably one of the reasons why he left to join the Jesuits.

"If you wish, we can send him", Adeleke couldn't even finish his sentence before she shook her head. Fernando was stubborn as a mule, which is likely how he found her. Even if the scouts told him she was dying of an exceedingly lethal and contagious disease, he'd still rush to her side, if only to give her last rites. He'd only stop if he was told she was dead, and Maria couldn't do that to her brother. With her mind made up, she opened her mouth once more "I will go".
Fernando Sanchez POV

What was taking so long? Fernando paced back and forth along the forest's edge. Only painful experience of what hidden dangers lurked within the New World kept him from running off into the forests.

"Hello brother".

Fernando spun around at once. Where had she come from? Could she have …? No, if Maria didn't poison Father despite him giving her plenty of motive and opportunity, she wouldn't sell her soul for a few parlor tricks. He must have been deeper in thought than he thought, that's all.

He studied his sister. At first glance little had changed. A few years older, a few pounds lighter. Her clothes were worn but well maintained, and her face had lines from smiling, something he would have thought impossible in his youth.

Then he looked into her eyes, and realized much had changed in those years. They were like steel. Fernando had only seen eyes like that once before, during his education. A member of the Order of Saint George had retired to the university after age and injury had forced his service in the Balkans to end. He had eyes like that, and none he asked either knew or would speak of how he got them. What had Maria seen, to have eyes like that?

His reverie was interrupted by Maria's hug, "It's good to see you. I hope you won't be in trouble with your superiors for coming to visit me". Fernando shook his head, tears falling down his face, "I would accept such punishment gladly, but fortunately am officially here to evaluate the potential of setting up a mission to convert the heathens here".

"As much as I would like to see you more, I'm afraid your superiors in the Society will be disappointed", Maria said. "There was once a tribe here ripe for conversion, but they were destroyed during our first winter here. What few survivors remain are scattered and extremely mistrustful of outsiders".

She hesitated for a second, then continued to speak "What about Father, is he". Fernando interrupted her, "Father is dead. He got himself and Adán killed during a New World trading expedition". What was he thinking? The Mapuche had a long and proud history of killing Europeans. The Society had managed to make a few inroads, but he'd be lying if he said relations between the two were anything but tense. Expecting them not to kill a greedy and unpleasant Spanish merchant who wandered into their territory was like expecting a dog not to eat meat! Hubris and Gold Fever were a truly lethal combination.

Fernando went on, "Cousis Juan has inherited Father's wealth, and he wants to rebuild ties. Without his resources, I would never have been able to find you". "He knows that you have married to a Dual Monarchies man, and he doesn't care. You're family" he finished his pitch.

Maria shook her head mournfully. "We have a saying here in Union, "Winter kills strangers'". Fernando's confusion was obviously clear on his face as she explained "It has multiple meanings, but the important one here is that this place gets in your blood. At first, this place seems like a cruel land, but it doesn't take long to become home".

"You don't understand!" Fernando exclaimed, "There are dark forces haunting the Spanish colonies, if anything like that is around here". The flinch was well-hidden but Fernando had far too much experience seeing his sister's pain.

It couldn't be true, it just couldn't l, "Maria have you?". "Be careful what you say next dear brother. There are those who would kill for such an insult" the steel in Maria's eyes had now spread to the rest of her body, including her voice. Fernando noticed that his escort suddenly had their weapons much closer to hand.

"I have felt the Temptations of Winter, as have all the citizens of Union" so that was what the demon was called. "Like all of us here in Union, I have dedicated my life to ruining the plans of those dark forces", a hint of pride leaked into her words.

"Then why haven't you tried to get aid from the European authorities?"

"How well did that work out in New Spain?", now it was Fernando's turn to flinch. She had a point. The more people, the more likely one would fall to temptation, and once Pandora's box was opened, it could not be closed again.

"And I'm guessing that Union has had to do some stuff that would have 'civilized' society screaming about devil worshippers", Maria gave a look of shock at Fernando's words. "Don't worry, as bad as you might think yourself, you're nothing compared to the Tlaxcala", he said while chuckling. "I'm willing to hide any peculiarities, or I can enter into negotiations with your leadership for the Society of Jesus as a whole to do so. Believe it or not, this situation was included in my instructions".

"I think something might be arranged, depending upon what your superiors want in return", said a voice from seemingly nowhere that startled them both.

Warrior's Son POV
The Warrior's Son knew that he shouldn't take so much joy from startling people, but it was simply too much fun.

AN: And the rest is a story for another day. I carefully chose which holy order Fernando belonged to. I figure the Jesuit's focus on education and evangelism would mean that they'd have a more nuanced view of what's going on the New World.

Okay, so I'm gonna try and get an omake out for question duty. There's just one problem: It needs names and I suck at names. I'd prefer a French and an Algonquin one if possible, with some extras as backups preferred. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I don't much care for those for RL cultures. The names all too often don't come out right. My go to option is googling [insert culture here] men's/women's names. Same trick works for surnames as well. It's how I got a lot of the names for this omake.

Got another one done, although I think this will be my last one for a while. I figured this omake was appropriate given the Scholar's appearance. I wrote the Order as being a group of scholars seeking occult knowledge, not in search of power, but for its own sake. They're neither monsters nor saints. They're just folks who have a fascination for or been cursed by the arcane, trying to keep it from destroying them. Anyways, I'm trying something different with this one, so feedback is appreciated.

AN: No, I have not suffered a stroke. Given the subject matter of this omake I figured encoding it with a Vigenère cipher would be appropriate. The key is "Winterfoe". Happy decoding. Translated version is in the spoiler below. Again, feedback is always appreciated.

An Occultist's Guide to Union
By Prometheus

Given our Order's recent investment into Union, it seemed wise to catalog the supernatural powers with ties to Union. Note that since the level of occult energy in Union regularly reaches levels previously thought to only exist in Dracula's castle, this document will go out of date, likely within a year.

Winter
The most hated foe of Union and all goodly folk in the area. Every year when the weather turns cold, it wreaks havoc upon the land. It has a variety of tools to do this, famine, cold, illness, and a wide variety of monsters and spirits. This variety of tools is made greater as Winter has two subordinates, Hunger and Cold, who can use most of the same tools, with their natures changing said forces. Hunger has command over hunger and mistrust, with brutish and powerful servants. Cold commands the icy winds and snow, with servants that are weak, yet tricky and capable of playing the long game. The only saving grace is that Winter seeks to cause misery, not destruction, else this whole land would be uninhabitable. As such, it holds back enough that it can be beaten with luck and preparation, and the people of Union have grown skilled in doing so.

The Freed Ones
From Union's greatest foe to its closest ally. Like the name suggests, they are a collective of ghosts and more corporeal undead who have broken free of Winter's curse. Much of the work of the Mourners goes to aiding them, and Unionist doctrine indicates that said souls are allowed to remain on Earth by God to better combat the forces of Winter. Alas, I fear it is more likely to be the lingering effects of Winter's curse. Still, understanding how to support them is key to getting the people of Union on our side. I have already reached out to Persephone, Hades, and Morrigan.
The Voices of the Sun-Loving Woods
These beings are not dissimilar at first glance to dryads and other tree spirits. However, these are not so bound to their trees as those, and are capable of moving said trees across significant distances. This has allowed the formation of a mutually beneficial relationship. The Voices receive aid against the Blood-Loving Woods, a similar but obviously more bloodthirsty group. Union receives a limited amount of lumber every year. A solid relationship, despite its youth. Not sure we can gain much from it in terms of knowledge though, as Phoenix's attempts to gain knowledge from dryads suggests otherwise.

The Buried King

Little is known about this enigmatic patron. He once created the Wilds as his garden, but he was severely weakened, likely by Winter, and the garden fell into ruin. He seeks to use the Unionists to rebuild the Wilds, an agenda said people are happy to comply with. I fear that such a decision may turn out to be the wrong one, as such beings are not known to be able to understand what humans need. Unfortunately, his agenda is popular enough within Union that I can't imagine that we can warn people away.

The Eyeless Lord
In ancient days, some corruptive being unaffiliated with Winter stalked these lands. I'd like to say it was a demon but it could not move when watched, but corrupted any who watched it, which would be an unusual trait for such a being. The Eyeless Lord was once a skilled occultist of that time who managed to bind said being. Said binding still holds, although time has allowed it to fray enough that some of the containment tools have gone rogue and started to infest the Wilds. I can scarcely imagine the wisdom he has at his disposal! If only we had military forces of our own with which to slay the rogue binding agents.

Tribute Takers
I have included these people in here as a matter of diplomacy should this be read by certain individuals within Union. They are vile, but still human, sorcerers who have sold their souls, among other things, to Winter. Alas, many disagree with this view, and voicing it is even less popular. Their mastery of curses and more subtle magics do give us an opportunity to demonstrate the power of our wards though. I recommend that Bastion or at least some of his disciples immigrate here as soon as can be arranged.

We really are kind of in a tight spot. I know they have magic on the european continent. Would our winter really be that out of context? Best case we take the people with a warning of what will happen. We wouldnt want winter to happen and them to break saying we didn't warn them. The guy who sees spirits we can take. The huntsman and trader prob just send on their way. More supplies would be nice but not as much as letting information about union get out. Right now they know the bare basics about us. Save a lot of time and arguing if native people count as citizens if we don't let them in the town.

Ooh, nice omake @Hunter531. I suppose some things like the Order not mentioning the other parts of the various deals the Sun-Loving Woods have made with Union are just them not knowing because Union hasn't told them about those (like the Woods harassing Union's enemies in the Wilds for example.)

If you're taking suggestions for questions to ask with the 2nd if the first is going to the Huntsman, the 2nd could be about how to manage the Colonists and making them willing to stay with Union even with magic, and not causing them to either run for the ship or cause resentment that their families hid things from them until the ship was gone and they could no longer leave.

Though a way to do that without making things overly game-y...

I'm afraid I'm too burnt out to try and non-gamify either of those questions. Two omakes in a relatively short period of time is way too much for me. I do think your write-in is pretty solid though.

Yes, I meant writing a charter, since Union do not have one. I was certain redaction meant the same in French and English...
Going to edit this.
I noticed that to make sieves for true gunpowder production we need coarse fibers. Would anything the merchant have be able to fulfill that?
There are a few horsehair goods on his ship, but not enough to make the sieves.

Thank you for your good work !
Take your time to think of any questions.
I am going to say, for the question about killing the Huntsman : You can completely do a write-in to either bring him to a real supernatural threat or mutilate his body before bringing it to people that are going to come back to Europe, to ensure people believe it was a monsters attack.

[X] Plan Gentle Encouragement and Meetings

Genuinely difficult set of problems to pick votes for.
Excellent.

I was about to get ready for bed when I realized I didn't exactly answer your question. I'm willing to spend one of my questions on the Huntsmen, although I'd be a lot less hesitant if I knew you were going to use your omake to check if the current vote leader had any major issues like last time. Don't get me wrong, it's not a dealbreaker or anything if you say no. It's a good question after all.

The decision just goes from a no-brainer to something I'll have to sleep on so as to make the decision with a clear head. Although, if we're delaying the trade deal and omake-ing the Huntsmen, then all that's left would be the colonists and the scholar, and the latter is much less of a risk. Bah, yet more reason to decide when I'm well-rested.

You see, I want at least two OOC questions ready to go for Part 3. Pretty sure that update will be able to eat at least one OOC question. In the event that I don't need to spend two and there's no decision making requiring omakes in part 4, I actually have another question I was going to ask before these damn miniturns hit.

Don't have the exact wording down, but I'm hoping to ask about what are the best paths we have to handling the Tribute Taker Raid. Sorta like how we did for healing those trees. Burning the Pit shows promise, but I don't think we should put all of our eggs in that particular basket. There are other promising avenues, like additional walls of Razorweed or the rewards of the Buried King. Alternatively, I could ask about what the raid is going to look like, and we can build our defenses from there. It's still a good way out, but this isn't the sort of thing we should feel comfortable procrastinating over.

I'd be willing to promise I'd spend an omake question as you want on issue-checking if I had the confidence in actually being able to finish it. I'll try my best, but early in the week like this is a bad time for me to be omake-writing, since I'm usually bust with my job. But I can promise to do my best.

For the raid preparation, I feel Burn the Lesser Pit should only be part of it. With the help of the Sun-Loving Woods, the Prince, and Champions and such, we can probably turn the diversionary raid into a serious incursion that does a lot ton damage while the Son raids the Pit in the backlines, depending on what Intel we have with targets to hit, depending on how much we think we can commit to repaying the debt.

I even had an idle thought of unlocking War Against Winter to hit a major Tribute-Taker settlement, but that may be going too far. But either way, hitting the Tribute-Takers from multiple angles I think is the way to go for the Pit Burning.

Might have more thoughts after I sleep. Is bedtime now.

What about asking a question regarding the trade deal during part 3? That would give you a lot more time to write, and I'd almost certainly be spending an omake on that.

I don't think doing a ton of damage will do all that much to reduce the Raid. Even if (and it's a fairly big if) we can do that kind of damage, this raid is something mandated by Winter itself. They will send the amount of forces Winter requires, as they fear the consequences of refusing Winter a whole hell of a lot more than they fear the consequences of overcommitting. They might even make up for their lack of conventional forces (which we should be pretty good at handling) with unconventional forces (which we have far less experience dealing with).

I'm not saying raiding would be useless or anything. I just think that the gains are in terms of dice and knowledge of the Tribute Takers with which we can forge counters, not weakening the raid itself.

[X] Plan Gentle Encouragement and Meetings
-[X][Trader] Strongarm David, he has 20 sailors, we have a militia and guns pointed at him from above. He should lower his prices.
-[X][Huntsman] Make him tour the walls and inspect the Militia
-[X][Colonists] Make them visit Union and their kin before they make a choice.
--[X] But keep the supernatural in Union hidden for now. After they have spent some time with their thought-lost kin, then we can decide how to hopefully ease them into things.
-[X][Scholar] Invite him and drag him before Sara and Failure. They shall know what to do with him.
--[X] The Silent Blades should not be present. To avoid...misunderstandings.
I suggest you to post only the name of the plan, if the author makes any adjustment after the OOC questions this will mess with the tally...

[X] Plan Gentle Encouragement and Meetings

This was a difficult vote, but this plan looks good. Watching all of these options play out is going to be interesting, but the scholar is going to be the most interesting. The Scientific Revolution must be crazy in this reality with the sudden influx of foreign magics into Europe.

One part of tha plan I'm iffy on is strongarming the merchant, are we planning on buying all his powder?

On the beaver fur debacle, I don't believe 2 units of beaver fur will be enough to start a gold rush. There are still plenty on beaver in Europe so while they are profitable, they are not that expensive like say silk.

Besides, we do not produce a great amount of beaver fur, the ones we have we looted from the Tribute Takers. So this trade is more a one off.

I imagine most of our regular trade goods will be things we grow, like tobacco or some other new Wilds plant.

Speaking of silk does anybody think we could tame some of the woodflesh spiders for steel silk production a longshot most definitely but if we can we got ourselves a luxury resource not found anywhere else not actively trying to kill you. Thoughts
