[X] The fact that nobles and guests of the King were specifically targeted.
Aye, mentioning the nobles is one thing, but it should be stressed, that the vast majority of them were not locals. They came to Paris for the wedding of Princess Margot of France and Duke Henry de Bourbon, that was suppose to end the religious struggle, thus they were guests of the King and were butchered as such. Traditions of hospitality are very strong in many countries and to violate them so brazenly was unthinkable. Even if the King didn't commit the killings, he was honour-bound to protect his guests and keep the peace. Which he didn't do.
