Not Quite Lovecraft

Hmm, the stay awake thing is interesting. Especially given we had the option to go to sleep last loop. I wonder what would have happened. Probably nothing good.

You could study those. You see scribbles of "stay awake", "Yog-Sogoth", "gate between worlds", and "stones combined".

Okay, it seems somebody wants to summon good old Yog-Sothoth. Or maybe they are trying to escape from him? It could be either of the two.

I am more interested in the first part, "stay awake". This implies that the culprit is trying to force themselves not to sleep for some reason.

Why is that? Are the Dreamlands dangerous for them right now? Are they tired but need to finish the ritual in time at all costs?

you think you see the gaunt face of something with too many teeth and dimensions stacking in an angle you don't recognize before it vanishes once more as the clock strikes ten.

Well well well, what do we have here?

The description makes me think of the Hounds of Tindalos. Wich would mean that maybe our culprit is begin hunted by them? Or maybe they are begin summoned by the timeloop?

Or maybe those aren't the Hounds of Tindalos but something else.

You know it occurs to me that to anything supernatural watching our ability to walk in that room and look around without even flinching must seem really unnerving.
Because you know, we seem utterly mundane.

So are we just so mundane we aren't even affected by the runes? Just blot them out? Or are we secretly some sort of higher being in disguise to whom the runes aren't even notable? (well, not yet)

Oliver begin unintentionaly scary is always fun.

The fact we are begin watched is also a good reason not to go to the Red Realm. We could be followed there and bring enemies to Emily doorstep.

Also, we don't know how traveling to another dimension would interact with the timeloop. It could be a disaster.

[X] Meditate drawing into your connection to Nemo working him into a battle frenzy, and channel it to wrench the lock apart with your claws.
-[X] Only if you are sure you are not observed - Smell for presence. Otherwise, ask the guard.

alternatively.. we don't have lock picking but we do have..

[X] Set up a canvas and try to paint the lock away into a painting, layer by layer to its inner mechanisms till it's no longer there in the physical world.
-[X] Smell for presence in any case

If it's a loop we can do away with subtlety I think.. We have two or three hours till midnight.

We could call the guards, but it would be bringing a mundane into a potentially supernatural situation. Or the compartment could be an absolute dud, who knows.

Going for a supernatural solution is massively overblown here. It also has the disadvantage of making our supernatural stealth much less useful if we constantly do supernatural stuff. Breaking down or damaging the door would also massive distract from the investigation if it is discovered too.
Plus having the guard as backup could still be useful even if we are going into a supernatural situation. People were perfectly willing to throw Robert into one after all.

On the other hand the fact that this door is locked would actually indicate to me that perhaps we should check somewhere else first. Because it means the thief would have needed a key (or other means). Which reduces the odds.

So my vote would be:

[X] See if you can sense anything through the door. If you can go get the guard to open it up, suggest the criminal is hiding in there.
-[X] If you can't sense anything go back and check the upper passenger car instead.

Clear out the easy paths before you walk the hard ones.
Edit:
[X] Ask the guard to open it up, suggest the criminal is hiding in there

Eh, why not?

Timeloop or not, i would prefer not doing anything that might create chaos, attract too much attention or contaminate the scene of the crime.

Missing Keys
You turned to fetch the guard. "The luggage car is locked," you informed him. "I suspect our thief might be hiding out in there."

The guard frowned. "That doesn't seem likely, it would be very uncomfortable, and we already have evidence he bought a cabin."

"He might not have expected us to catch onto him so soon and had to go there," you tried.

The guard sighed. "Let me finish checking the dining car." It took him a good half hour to finish up and confirm that the suspect wasn't there before he turned and headed back down to the luggage car. He dug through his jacket and frowned. Reaching down he patted his pants pockets, and then his jacket again. He checked his belt. "That's odd, I seem to have forgotten my keys. One moment." He headed up to the front of the train where the staff had small rooms of their own and began to dig through it searching for his keys. He went through it again and again, before turning back to you. "We'll have to wait to arrive at the station to open the luggage car."

Well, that is suspicious. Perhaps the thief stole them. It would explain how they got in.
I'm not sure if we should suggest this to the guard, or if we should search the rest of the train first. Being able to say "look we searched everywhere else, so they must be in the luggage car" would be compelling.

How about this:

[X] Place a drop of paint on the doorjamb such that it dries unbroken, but would be broken if the door opens.
-[X] Then Search the upper passenger car

We still have time, so we can come back in a few hours. With this we can check if anyone opens the door, which will also give us additional evidence.

[X] After the guard leaves waste no time, and channel Nemo. Time for subtleties is past.
-[X] If there's time after the luggage car, you plan to spend the rest of the time creating a memory block for the devouring flower. To seal your memory away so you can claim them later after the ordeal is past. Use the locket where you already have put pieces of your self in before.
-[X] If there's no time, mentally brace yourself for the event.

Next loop we can not cause an alarm and sus out the grey haired person.

Well if time is low perhaps we can have a little haste. But uh, smashing the door open is still excessive. We can do that if picking the lock fails.

I'm ok with either of these.
