Leaves From the Vine: Lu Ten Survives (An ATLA AU)

Everybody seems to be focusing on helping Zuko and completely ignoring that helping Azula is an option why?

[X] Plan Soldier no more

It's also worth mentioning that we know the Fire Nation has access to metal prosthetics during the final stages of the war thanks to Sparky Sparky Boom Man.

But yeah. I'm fine with Blinded Eye, since it means getting an eyepatch but Scarred Face really treads way too close to Zuko for me to like it as an option. I like Blinded Eye and Missing Arm much more.

All I'm going to say is that Lu ten needs to learn to be that spiritual guy.

And that isnt easy

  • [X] Plan: Ich Bin Soldat
-[X]A Scarred Face: War always carries scars. Yours only marks your face. Now no one can even look at you without wincing in pain, in disgust, and fear.
-[X]Trauma: Every night you dream of falling rocks, of your friends screaming. Of fire and explosions, and a falling wall that just keeps bleeding red. There were so many… so many. And you can't sleep at night anymore. The nightmares can't hurt you while you are still awake.
-[X]A Ruined Reputation (Birthright): Your Father was always the popular one. He was Azulon's favorite. He was the one who was to succeed. Ozai always viewed you as a threat, always being vocal… or not, about his desire for the throne, how he could win the war that your father could not. Your status is now questioned and even Azulon thinks you are not fit for the throne despite your sacrifices and dedication.
    [X] Plan Traumatized Hero Complex
-[X]A Scarred Face: War always carries scars. Yours only marks your face. Now no one can even look at you without wincing in pain, in disgust, and fear.
-[X]Blinded (One Eye): You don't know what happened. One moment you could see out of your left side… then there was nothing. A piece of rock finding its way through your helmet. You didn't notice it when the bandages were on, and you thought it was nothing… but once they were removed. It was hard to miss.

[X] Plan: I gave you my blood, my mind, but not my men

-[X]A Missing Arm: Being a Sapper was one of the most dangerous jobs of the Seige, and you would have never let your men face the danger without you leading the charge. It detonated too early, and the healers could not save it, well you lost most of your left arm, at least the hand prosthetic was serviceable, but you couldn't bring yourself to use one of the new metal arms. It felt too alien and relied too much on parts that would keep you in the Fire Nation capital.

-[X] A Ruined Reputation (The Army): The Army had followed your father into hell, and you along with it. They'd paid for their glory in blood, sweat, and tears. They were brothers and sisters in arms you loved as your own, your father loved them all; and by ordering that retreat on the eve of something to make that loss worth it. It stained your legacy. You were no Iroh.. You were the coward who begged to save their lives from a meatgrinder without end and your own. And they never forgave you.

[X] Plan: Down With The Fire Nation
-[X] A Ruined Reputation (The Common citizens): Your Father was the Hero. The jovial, and respected Dragon of the West. He had been in this war in its longest years, masterminded its greatest victories, and brought the Outer Wall down. Now he's dead a Martyr for his nation… the blame for the failure was not placed on the honored dead… but on the still, crippled living. How could you hope to succeed him? But they saw you not as the Dragons successor. But his shame and shadow. Defeat only brought shame, and you lost your honor on the outer walls of Ba Sing Se. if not in deed, then in spirit.

-[X]Deafened: You can't hear out of your left ear anymore. An explosion that went off too soon, when you were not prepared, not expecting it. You remembered that it blew a hole in the Outer Wall, the foothold… the possibility of final victory at hand… now only a distant reminder.

Azula is pretty much unhelpable as long as Ozai exists. It's actually rather sad, her talent and being Ozai's favorite means she's almost inevitably going to adopt his worldview because he basically controls everything in her environment.

If he thinks that we're causing Azula to move away from his world view and influence, he can literally stop it with a word or two.

Zuko is easier because he's already neglected by his father, and Ozai doesn't give two shits about him.

To try and help Azula, we'd have to get her a waay from the palace from a significant period of time, and while she's still young enough to not have her worldview set in stone. Which I'm pretty sure is pretty early on in her childhood for Azula.

All of which makes the situation seem pretty hopeless from my POV.

With this plan, not only would we become Uncle Iroh, we could become Cyborg Uncle Iroh as well. :D

And that's why the father lord is such a doche. Emotionally manipulating his family against each other and using his wife to kill his father and threaten to kill his own son.

Which really makes me wonder why he didn't put any sort of time and effort into Zuko. Like seriously, that boy may not be right, but Zuko clearly had potential when he was finally given proper training from iroh.

That boy had his mom being the best supporter and every time that they are on screen together warms the heart.

I mean it's already too late to help Azula. In canon she was already pretty… set in her ways when Lu Ten died.

Now her beloved uncle is dead and her cousin most likely will be a cripple.

It will only affirm her world view I'd argue

Not sure if Im remembering right, but he did try to get tutors to train him. Zuko just did really badly until he ended up with Iroh.

I could be wrong though, and what trying means for us is different for Ozai as well, so he could argue he gave up after no development.

I dunno about that, Lu Ten was to Iroh what Azula thinks she is to Ozai. And unlike Iroh he didn't give up and return home unscathed but emotionally scarred, he was obviously maimed. There's also no need to go the Iroh route and feign helplessness, Lu Ten the adult would spank Azula the child if they sparred at this point which breaks her ability to dismiss him as a weakling.

I'd say the turning point for Azula's mental health being permanently affected without intervention is being abandoned by her mother (age 8) + all her friends leave the Capital. If nothing changes after that she gets super maladapted from several years of her only emotional connection being Ozai.

Edit:

Zuko was fairly talented from the start, what he didn't have was emotional regulation. So he'd easily be baited into traps and forget his fundamentals when he got too frustrated.

Um... Depending on what has happened to Lu Ten, she actually can whoop your ass. Now that is something I am holding close to my chest just in case. But know that the physical injuries that are affecting Lu Ten are not cosmetic. They will affect everything about him for the rest of his days.

Then you are far to late, as Zuko is 11, and Azula is 9 at this point in time, which is when Lu Ten cannonically died.

They are both going to be pretty set in some of those ways.

His tutors didn't really help in that regard, and his environment is entirely regimented in a way that would not encourage his growth as a person.
