Seems I've accidentally joined in at a nice moment for the quest!

I must say, I'm floored with worldbuilding on display here, both in the inventive setting and in the eldritch undertones. I dig. And then I got invested in the characters and binged everything in one day! Can't wait for more!

Interval 72: Old Soldiers
[X] They want you, not any of the others. You've already lured them into a kill zone once. If you continue to give ground slowly you can let Luyu extract Lanaiatte without the danger of a counter attack.

You could run, you could leave Lanaiatte there. She is, after all, one of the people who could have betrayed you. There is another strategy though. One you find curiously attractive. It's heroic, and perhaps a bit self destructive. You like the idea of being a hero, of filling in the blank spaces of yourself with such things.

Alex's needles claw into you, reminding you of things as important as your survival, but you will survive. You'll survive and get your people out.

You step back into the pipes, as if you're trying to clear the fire lane of the sub. Giving them a small chance to get to you. The drone snaps in a new ammo box from its cargo, smart enough to stay aimed through the gap as you move. Let them come to you.

Cynipoidea-18 take the bait and more.

The enemy are split into more or less two elements. One group fighting the Luyus up in the rafters, the others on the floor coming at you. The Luyu team peel back, apparently to reinforce the group coming for you as they make their advance.

The ones on the ground are what consume your attention though. They commandeer a cargo robot - likely pre-cracked - and shove a cargo container forward, sheltering behind it and firing waves of indirect fire munitions around the side. The drone gun, forgetting even about the much more powerful cannon on the sub, should be able to punch holes in the relatively thin metal and carbon, but there's something inside that soaks up the rounds. Maybe something exotic, or just enough bags and barrels of doped sand.

A miniature air war of drones and missiles rages around the sides of the container, as missiles and funnels rip into one another. The Luyus above have shifted their fire to try to cover you, but it might have been a bad move. The Cynipoidea-18 operatives on the upper level don't hesitate when given an opening.

The wasps manoeuvre with rapid surety. Four of those fighting Luyu above break off and charge the sub, moving in short dashes. The sub and Mirareki switch fire but they've already popped blackout smoke. One goes down, then another, but the last two make it in and volley their weapons full offensive into the sub's shield. There's a loud bang as the weapons pod is knocked out, a moment before Mirareki's fire takes them both down.

You have other things to worry about. The team sheltering behind the container are almost on top of you, moving fast even as you continue to give ground. They mask Miareki with more black out smoke and an array of overcharged defence aura generators.

Above you see the Luyu's, three, no, is that two? Jumping forward in a series of dashes, heading for Lanaiatte. Their countermeasures are twitching out a strange hide set, a flashing, migraine camo that makes it almost hurt to look at her. The two, you're almost sure it's only two, vanish amid the girders, flashes of plasma and and gunfire lighting the upper area as they exchange fire with the Wasps still trying to prevent them moving on the control centre.

Cynipoidea-18 don't care about them. They're coming for you. They must be dead switched. Their movements are fast and choppy, less mechanical than predator centipede. One has lost her mask somewhere and you see her eyes. Blank and unemotional, nothing behind them.

You dodge behind a pillar, moving as a two person team with your drone, pouring direct fire at them as they break free of their cover. The container rocks as Mirareki gets an anti-tank drone through but it's too late. They swarm at you, seeking your blood like the ghostly yellow jackets in a pre-exile legend.

In ones and twos, and teams and as a squad, they pour forward, and once again you wonder if you've run out of luck. If you pushed it too far this time. Rounds begin to break through your defence. A round slams into your arm and you brace your carbine one handed in its shoot on the move cradle, dumping the entire mag as fast as you can. The gun's barrel glows white hot.

It's not enough. You're hit again and again, your defences stretched to their limits. With the sub's gun down, there's nothing to stop them. Nanotech bubbles up at each hit, but there's blood too, increasing amount of it, bubbling through your armour to prevent bubbles and weaknesses in it.

A round hits your carbine, slapping it away and almost breaking your shoot on the move system, locking it into a mere brace. You're once again forced to switch full defensive on the drone, its ammo indicator spooling down as it plucks one munition after another out of the air, close enough that frags spike your spin through your collapsing aura.

One, a larger one, smashes into you. You stumble backwards and fall over, flashing red damage signals from your left arm joined by ones from your stomach, your head, everywhere. Ahead of you, your enemies go full offensive, needing no defence against an enemy supine before them.

"Yoooo!"

The third Luyu seems to come out of nowhere. Impossibly stealthy for someone so big and armoured. Actually, you realise, she was above, having crept along on her belly to the edge of the gantry. Now she drops, laughing out a greeting, and shoots. The Sakuran missile swarmer in her hand thumps out an alpha burst, the entire magazine fired at once, dropped into that instant of vulnerability as their weapons are fully aimed at you, rounds fired at maximum velocity smashing through their active defences before they can regenerate and finding their way true into armour and bodies.

The remaining Cyniopidea drop short. One tries to rise, aiming her pistol at you.. The damaged Luyu behind her blows her brains out with her own big pistol she's drawn from somewhere. "And stay down," she says, then coughs. "Oh fuck. I'm really messed up."

"You need a medical bag." The Luyu with the missile gun reloads.

"You're the one talking to yourself out loud." The injured one says. "I'm okay. Just my legs don't work. I'm still reconfiguring my nerves."

You slump down. There's a series of flashes and the harsh scent of burning chemical, as the Wasp gear starts to self-destruct. The charges burn so hot that there's little smell of burned flesh. Communications systems and the strange diplomat coloured tools burn away with their owners. The other two Luyus step out, with Lanaiatte behind them. The engineer looks a little pale, and is looking at Luyu like she's sex on legs.

"How'd you do that?" you ask. Your arm looks awful. You're also going to need medical pod time, or at least a week or so to regenerate the damage. It won't be much use until then.

"You can trick the conscious mind, but you can also trick the subconscious." Luyu taps a finger on the side of her head. "When I was with the Combined Response Committee, we fought a lot of Benedicts. They can trick your eyes, but you can trick them." She transparents her visor and grins, ostentatiously. "I figured those guys were dead switched. Unconscious. It makes you fast, but the conscious mind does things. So."

You hadn't known she'd fought Benedicts. Strange, hermetic aliens somehow terrifyingly intelligent despite a total lack of interiority. With the CRC? You remember, that was more than two hundred years ago. They're just a weapons production collective now, a much loved brand name rather than a military force.

"We should sweep the pod properly. There might be more hiding out."

"Let me do that. You're also messed up."

You look down at yourself. Your tac sleeve is breached in a dozen places and one arm hangs limply, only about twenty percent functional. "Yeah. That's a good idea."

Mirareki arrives from the sub, and the pair of you and Lanaiatte carry the injured Luyu back to the ship. By the time you arrive they're all but carrying you as well.

#

You hold the conference by remote, on the submarine's network. The medical bay is crammed with the critical Luyu and you. The other three Luyus are in the crew section, ready in case someone makes a break for it. You still have a traitor aboard.

<<The Sub will be fixed up in about an hour. At this point the automatics will take care of it and I can just watch it. We've distributed some sensors outside as warning in case something gets launched at us, and we can quick launch whenever. We should be able to get out before anyone blows the bay.>>

<<They probably don't want to take us out that way.>> You say. <<I have an AI in my head, that was what they were trying to kill. They want to make sure it's gone. The team in there were carrying targeted basilisk weapons.>> The cover story comes without really thinking, and without much concern. It's a plausible enough lie. Hell, it's basically true.

<<Still. Someone sabotaged us. We need to figure out who it was.>>

Reizay butts in. <<I've checked the physical evidence of the hack. It's slim. Whoever did it has a set of good tools. I also checked the team that was sent after us. They had self destruct systems on their queues with transmit outs, but I was able to retrieve partial engrams from them.>>

A bit worrying she's able to retrieve stuff off of a blown queue. You sometimes forget that while she's young and cute and weird, Reizay was a security operative for the Closed Dyson.

<<Unfortunately their memories are mostly wiped. They were running with an artificial telos stack above entirely wiped memories, with just enough inserted stuff to let them do the mission. Even the three initial operatives were mostly wiped, with only enough biographical data to let them talk normally.>>

<<That's ghoulish.>> Mirabelle says.

<<Still, we come back to the fact that someone aboard is a traitor.>>

The sick cloud of suspicion thickens. The communionists eye one another, and you, and the Chrysanthemum. Your team is above suspicion. You decide that as a means to constrain the solution space because it's almost certainly true and frankly, you have most of the guns. But the Communionists you can't be sure about. Doesn't their mortality mean they'd never accept such a suicidal mission? But you know that's not how it works. In ancient mortal times people would give their lives, even those who didn't place them in the hands of a higher power.

<<Few in our time thought they would live forever,>> says Alex, from deep inside. <<I almost admired those with the nerve to spend their lives intentionally.>>

Shenla and Academician Selko are safe as anyone. You can't be sure of the three sub crew. Was Lanaiatte trying to extract when she went ahead? But there's also Alawen, the local security for the first temple expedition when you arrived here, who has attached herself as Selko's personal bodyguard but is hardly from her personal circle.

Then there's the Chrysanthemum, Liya and Mirabelle, sitting next to one another with pressed lips. You know the local enclave has been compromised and very plausibly more. But that'll be a hard case to press. The two of them are trained agents and will certainly back one anoth-

<<Mirabelle is the one who sent us here!>> Liya blurts out. <<She's CLEARLY suspect. Maybe she has an implant in her head! A secondary personality!>>

<<Please don't make arbitrary speculations,>> says Minetta sharply.

<<Th-thankyou,>> says a startled Mirabelle. She seems more indignant at the strange scientist's rudeness than the fact she was just accused of being the saboteur.

But as you were thinking, they are actually a little suspicious. Neither Mirabelle nor Liya would have had easy access to ship systems, but Chrysanthemum software weapons are excellent.

At this point you don't really have enough evidence for a direct accusation. Rather, you think it would be better to pick an approach.

[ ] Have Reizay, a trained security operative take charge of the investigation, not withstanding the fact her training is from the Closed Dyson. It's unlikely to make her - or you - popular but she will find something.
[ ] Work with Reizay and Lanaiatte to try to determine when the software weapon was introduced to the submarine to try to narrow down the suspect list. It'll take time but minimise disruption to the mission or the crew until you can act more surgically.
[ ] Given both the Communion and the Chrysanthemum have had infiltration, there's no way to localise things easily. It's best to just interview everyone and use the combination of expertise in the group to figure out who's a problem. It'll be more intrusive than just checking the software but if it works it could nail a suspect.

Hm. I feel like this is the knid of thing we want a definitive answer on, as soon as possible. Never know how many contingencies there are, the infiltrator might have another software weapon.

Interval 73: Investigation

You assemble everyone in the sub's lounge. It's by far the largest clear space in the vessel, which isn't saying much, but the sofas around the central wooden table are augmented by carefully designed wall plants and projection walls into a beachfront scene, so you're all sat on the terrace of some beautiful cafe at dusk. The temperature and airflow are perfect, but it doesn't quite fit the tense mood of the space. One of the Luyus frowns and changes it to a forest glade scene, with distant wind rustling the leaves. That feels a little better.

Everyone is sitting in their own groups, which you don't like. Your team are on two of the sofas, with even the three Luyus who are present consenting to sit down, draping across one another like cats. Mirareki is the only one standing, tense and ghostly behind the rest, with Shenla at her side. Reizay sits on her own near them.

The Five other Communion are sitting off on one side around a chair, with Academician Selko at the front, as speaker. Alawan is standing, matching Mirareki in fight readiness, while the three students/crew are sitting together. Diraen and Celebrian are fussing over Lanaiatte, who is hence the only person in here who seems to be having a good time. The two Chrysanthemum scientists are sat to one side, Mirabelle worried and Liya annoyed.

You walk to the table, deliberately distancing yourself from your own group. "Alright. We've been sabotaged, and that was an ambush." You rest yourself forward onto the table, letting everyone see the gleaming silver streaks of newly healed wounds across your skin. It's an illusion of course. You're far too hurt to appear in person. You're no more real here than the forest is, your senses and feelings projected from your real body, currently hanging in a medical pod next to Luyu.

"We need to resolve this situation quickly. We're exposed to serious danger as long as it continues. Reizay. You have the training for this. Please find the source of the breach, using whatever methods you have at your disposal." And then to everyone else: "I apologise for this, but I don't think we have a choice. She was a Closed Dyson security officer and we can trust her absolutely here. We'd have been dead long ago if we couldn't. If you object, say so now."

It's a nasty move, and it works. Even if there are people who disagree, they know that to object now would be to make themselves look suspicious. It probably won't be a knockout blow but its a start of persuasion. Cold anxiety seeps through the assembled as everyone silently accounts what might be exposed, or they might be exposed to. And everyone knows what the words Closed Dyson mean in the popular imagination. A place of undemocratic hierarchy, police state paranoia, and a thousand lurid exploitation entertainments.

There's the clap of hands behind you, and pink twintails step forward into your field of view..

"Right!" Reizay says. She's beaming. You've never seen her look so happy. "Well, I'm going to need access to everyone's personal networks, but don't worry. As a class security representative, I am kept to the highest standards in my examinations, and I have a personal ethics ranking in the top quantile for my position."

"How reassuring." Selko says, dryly. "Can you tell us, Miss R1N, what exactly this will involve?"

"Weeellll" Reizay steps forward to the table and you give ground. "I'm not sure I can fully reveal my sources and methods, but basically, I'm going to take the products of your personal data systems and biological memories and subject them to a set of examinations."

"Wait, I thought that was impossible. You can't just examine someone's memories in a computer without simulating them." Shenla says. "We don't believe in having copies made of us."

"I'm not going to make any kind of copy or run a simulation. That would be monstrous." Reizay sniffs. "The enclosing lady gives us various gifts to secure ourselves from malign influences. This is one of them."

Everyone looks at one another, but after a while Selko is the first to send over access permissions. You give her a grateful look, which she returns coolly. You owe her for this, and Reizay had better come through. Several of the others look nervous, Shenla is predictably angry. Of the Chrysathemum Mirabelle looks merely exasperated while Liya looks very uncomfortable.. But she complies.

Once Reizay has the data, there's an awkward period where you wait, and then you're yanked abruptly into one of the equipment pods as Reizay reprograms your viewpoint. She's unpacked one of the lockers, and is sitting next to a gleaming black box that you recognise as an acausal decryption rig. "This is so great," she smiles and pats the rig, then pulls her fingers back from the heat. "I never got to work with something like this at home. You outsiders, you're so weird but your technology is great." She switches the rig on, a flickering activation light coming on then turning from red to blue. "Look at this." She coos. "It's so small. It's not like that giant rig we had to use on Haraway at all, and that was tiny too! The ones we have back home are the size of a building."

"So what are you going to do?"

"Oh. I'm going to have my Daemon scan everyone's data for gaps and artifice." She says. "See, I don't actually think anyone did it. That's my theory of the crime. Everyone's gone through security screening except Atet, and I've been monitoring her." Reizay admits it blithely. "Nothing intrusive but she hasn't sent out anything suspicious."

"Who else are you monitoring, Reizay?"

"Look. She's a member of a kidnap conspiracy. There's certainly a chance she could be a sleeper agent. I don't think it makes a lot of sense though. If she wanted to kill your head friend then she could have just let that posthuman do it on Scythia. I'm sure it could have taken out Alex for good, right?"

"What about Alawen? She's a local conflict specialist and those are always sus. Maybe she could have tipped ECHO CHAMBER to us to begin with."

"I checked with Selko about her. She went through security screening with Selko's faction as well. They couldn't find any links between her and the Chrysanthemum or anyone else, and their procedures look good. Plus, do you really think a mercenary security specialist would be willing to maybe die to get us? She only has one life, remember?"

"Okay. So what do you have?"

"Take a look at this." She pulls a screen into existence with a flourish. "I've been able to isolate traces of the tool that disabled the navigation and hull repair. There are some fairly obscure log files they didn't scrub properly which you can cross reference to indicate anomalies at particular times, which wasn't much use until I discovered this really quite serious flaw in the sub's systems that is dumping regularly dumping memory chunks into an unused container. That container in turn is destroyed and recreated as part of the system's usual lifecycle, which is probably why it's not been noticed and dealt with already, but that lifecycle itself was disrupted by the crash and repair cycle which necessitated a reboot which paradoxically-"

She continues in this giddy vein for a while. You don't have the heart to stop her.

"-so by comparing these memory chunks with the established log data you can recreate this pattern of activity by the attacker weapon. Now, these markers are consistent with a worm in the Chaos/Elegance v2.1.1 lineage which is popular in this spatial region - I have to know this to discharge my duties as security officer - so it would indicate a local origin, but there are actually inconsistencies on closer inspection. If you look here and here, you can see that-"

You find the strength. You have no choice.

"Reizay. Reizay!"

"...yes?"

"This is very impressive, but we can review the details later. What's the result?"

The twintails droop a little. "It's, uh, it's not a local software weapon. It's a Chrysanthemum one modified to look like a local one if anyone manages to catch it. Now," she perks back up, "that doesn't prove anything in itself, the weapon could have been delivered by anyone, but if you-"

You gently, then firmly, push a finger between her shoulder blades.

"...right. There's also retrievable deployment markers. The trojan sheath originated from an agent running Chrysanthemum protocols. And due to the distinct Communion architecture it would be very difficult to fake that. It was Liya or Mirabelle. For a given value of 'Liya or Mirabelle'."

"What do you mean by that?" It's hard to imagine either the annoying waif or the motherly scientist as some kind of covert ops assassin. That could be the point, but even then, agents tend to be a type.

She smiles, triumphantly, her hair bobbing back up to full perkiness: "I don't actually think it's either of them." Reizay says. "Let me show you something else. This is data on, basically, mental activity." She pops up another window. "This is your graph. You see these instances here–" She points to a flat plateau of data in between the saw teeth of normal activity. "That's when Alex takes over." "Given everyone's been through security screening, it makes more sense that someone has a secondary personality implanted without their knowledge. They lose time, either sleeping or daydreaming, and the traitor personality loads in. It does its business and leaves a fabricated alibi for the real personality, which with a little nudging smooths over the anomalies in its own historical perception. Humans have a lot of old functionality for that for whatever reason."

A cute spider drops down onto the graph and begins to crawl along it. "This is my daemon, Serket. She'll look through the data for artificial parts. That's one of the easiest ways to fool personal data. I wasn't expecting to find any in the cognitive graph. So, for instance, you're clean of it, your girlfriend is playing fair."

You squash a flush. She's just making a joke. Of course she's just making a joke.

"What point allying with someone if you're simply going to turn them into a puppet?" says Alex. Reizay blinks. Your shadow has come alive behind you and is leaning forward, hands over your shoulders, burning lips next to your ear.

"Ahah. I didn't mean any offence," she says.

"There are those who would give you much for the secrets you perform your miracles, Reizay R1N." Alex says.

"I'm not actually sure I'm going to give you the Enclosing Lady's secrets," says Reizay, pugnaciously. "Not even you."

You thought the Lady was a god. Is she a posthuman?

"Very well," says Alex. All present know Reizay couldn't stop her. Does her indulgence of you extend to the others? "I think you have results though."

Reizay brings up the details for the two Chrysanthemum agents. "As you can see, there's no marked dead zones, but there are several areas of artificial consciousness. They're just about the best I've ever seen but Serket got them!" She pats the spider, which does a little dance, then highlights several peaks in red. As you regard them they pop up a series of indicators, including overly irregular generation of information, and micro event generation showing an AI is being used.

"You see here both of them have periods of down time that show they could have a passenger." Reizay says.

"So both of them are agents?" Two could be bad.

"Maybe." Reizay frowns."But I'm not so sure. Let's bring in some side data." She snaps a finger and two neural activation imprints come up. "It's possible that - aaah!""

An image coalesces out of the chaos of Liya's brain. You have just enough time to take in what it is, the motions, the gestures, the flesh, before Reizay slams the window firmly closed.

"Okay so that's what Liya was doing no need to pry any further the culprit is Mirabelle."

"Mirabelle. Or strictly speaking a secondary agent implanted into Mirabelle…" You trail off as a terrible realisation comes over you. "Wait. Liya was right?"

You can deal with the fallout of that later. The question now is what to do about the agent.

[ ] Just terminate Mirabelle and just grow her a new body without her passenger, potentially traumatising the scientist and putting her out of action for a while but dealing with the problem quickly.
[ ] Arrest her quickly and openly, and stun her if necessary.
[ ] Have Luyu take her aside on some excuse and then incapacitate her
[ ] Wait and observer for a while and confront her at a opportune moment.

[X] Arrest her quickly and openly, and stun her if necessary.

Normally it would be smarter to give them some more rope to bait something more and counter, but after obviously winning no friends with saying that the security expert is going to trawl them, openly getting a result and acting on it would help serve as a public post-justification for it.
