Not Quite Lovecraft

[X] Ask how exactly were you supposed to explain?
-[X] Vivid paintings would not be enough to convince most people. If you wished to convince people you would need more blatantly supernatural proof.
-[X] People often react badly upon encountering something blatantly supernatural. Especially if they lack prior exposure.
-[X] So we would either be dismissed, or we would have to shatter the ignorance of the public single handedly. Which would go very badly.

  • [X] Because not everyone understands. And what people do not understand they fear.
-[X] Tell the tale of the girl who had Ocean blood and was terrified of her change. And people who would hurt her if she was discovered. And her mother who could not meet her and yearned.
-[X] The need for the blessings of mother goddesses and the forces of good who protect their people from the dark. The importance to know so you may fight back. The beauty in the magic.
-[X] Yet arcane knowledge must be guarded to keep safe those who do not know from meddling with what they don't understand. And bring ruin upon themselves and others from greed.
-[X] Fire can be life giving yet it can also destroy. So one must keep it out of reach from children. And the others who Know needing to take burden of lighting the way. Bring up your friend the good Reverend who helped put an end to generations of haunting.

Roommates
"How exactly was I to tell people of this? Claim something is magic, and there's either witch trials or I'm put in an asylum 'for my own good'. People aren't going to just believe it. Vibrant paintings are barely anything at all."

You scowled. "And your response to seeing them was to find me to try and kill me." The man shifted uncomfortably. As he should be, considering what he put you through. "That's not even touching the fact that my paintings are far down on the scale for the occult. There are much larger and much more dangerous things out there, and I am certainly not equipped to explain them."

Emily drifted into the room then, hair for the moment put up. She looked at the intruder and blinked slowly. "For the garden?" she asked.

Haha what perfect timing.

Still, was he actually coming here to kill us? I guess he did bring a knife, but it seems like a rather half baked plan.

We should grill him on how exactly he got to this point, and if there was anyone else he was working with. Perhaps he is just a pawn.
Then I guess we give him the cliff notes on the occult. Make sure he isn't going to do anything dumb and let him go? Maybe arrange for regular check ins? Hah maybe we can start giving him quests!

Kinda funny that we are now the mentor.

[X] "No, no. For the study, I think. It would seem I have a student."
-[X] Have him explain the steps that led him here. What guided his path? What drove his feet?

He didn't come to kill us, he came to kill the demon monster thing that existed only as a fantasy from his daydreams of being a hero.

I'm a bit surprised that there's such a quick bandwagon for him as a student. This guy has no common sense, survival instinct, or grasp of anything about the actual supernatural. I'm rather surprised something hasn't eaten him already.

Still, I suppose questioning him further and teaching what he's willing to learn in exchange is a reasonable trade.

I do not think taking him as a student will be good. People who act so rashly will do so in the future and it will only drag down with him. I do agree on questioning him further.

I love how Emily is basicaly our ride or die friend. The moment she sees the intruder she dosen't question anything, she is already pulling out the shovel.

Emily is incredible :)

For perspective: most people either fail to notice or don't encounter the occult at all. For those who do encounter the occult, the chance is high of madness or death.

This fellow just so happens to be sensitive enough that Oliver's art triggered him. It is also his first ever magic encounter

I'm thinking we send him off to the good Reverend for an apprenticeship. He'd be able to give him some much needed counselling. And Oliver would occasionally check in on his progress. This way, depending on how things goes we'll have another cleric to draw upon should the Reverend be unavailable. This is only if you guys would rather not handle his training.

Sensitivity can be channeled in other ways should he have no innate art talent too.

I'm probably not really feeling the whole Jedi master with apprentice option with this guy. Me wanting to smack him a bit is not a good first impression.

I like the idea of sending him to the reverend. That guy should be better at working with people than us, and know more people in general, for the desperately needed social-fu training of this wannabe hero.

Maybe one day, we can complete the full circle of training skill, to reach the level of Yoda smacking Luke with a cane but still actually doing a decent job at the training.

I'm not particularly inclined to have us train the guy (at least not for long), so passing him off to the Reverend sounds good to me.

Study
"No, the study. It seems I may have a new student." You frowned at the man, torn. Your conscience wouldn't allow you to simply walk back out into the world as under equipped as he was. Once one encountered the occult, it tended to be easier to encounter again. You did not care much for him, but you would not send him out to the wolves.

Emily tilted her head consideringly. "Not here," she said slowly. "This is our home."

You understood. You certainly weren't comfortable with how the man had broken into your home and tried to threaten you. You gestured for him to follow you, and Emily watched for a moment before turning to Nemo and giving them attention. You kept your hand near your gun just in case. Things had seemingly cooled down, but you couldn't bring yourself to drop your guard just yet.

You sat down in your study and watched as the man warily took a seat of his own. "So, who are you? And why did you decide this was best solved by breaking into my home?"

"Colin Vermack," the man muttered. "And it seemed better to sneak in and find out what I could before facing the one who commanded such strange powers."

You blinked. "The paintings unnerved you that badly?"

"They were too strong, too vivid. I woke feeling the need to seek light. Such a thing couldn't be natural," the man explained fervently.

[ ]Ask him to tell you exactly how he encountered your paintings and what happened

[X] Ask him to show you the painting
-[X] Tell him about the good Reverend along the way, how together with him you put to rest to a generations spanning haunting.
-[X] He could help him, taking him under his wing.
-[X] His natural sensitivity to the occult could be a gift, not a curse that he can use to do so much good. Be a real hero, fighting against the dark.
-[X] You believe the painting pushed him to look deep into himself for answers, and seeking light was the answer his true self returned.

The Last part of this choice make me wonder if the light blinded the man's common sense if him breaking in with a knife says anything about it

Edit

Shouldn't it be telling us which painting it was not showing?

Really we should be asking all of these before we point him to the Reverend or anything.
I will also point out that the Reverend is on the other side of the Atlantic if I recall correctly.

Once this is done we explain enough to make sure he doesn't get killed or worse (Most stuff is really dangerous, make sure you take breaks between exposures to let your sanity recover, magic is costly unless you take it really slow.)
Then we tell him about the Reverend if it seems like a good idea. We don't know Colin's opinion regarding religion, and we haven't seen the Reverend in a while. Maybe to pay him an in person visit?
