[X] Tap into Nemo's senses to peer down the well
Hopping aboard the bandwagon

I debated the value of checking the house first, but I think the well is the center of it

Down the Well
You were ready to face the well. You turned back across the field and reached into your connection with Nemo. You felt them become more alert as their senses were shared with you and you peered down the well. Something had definitely died down there, you could see small bits of broken flesh bobbing in the water. Worse, you could see that the well connected to what seemed like an underground cavern, one perhaps large enough to form a water reservoir for a small town like the one you were in.

[X]Try to sneak in through the back

Let's wait on going down into a cave until we've made sure nothing will cut the rope when we are halfway down.

Well, that explains the plague at least. Bad water in a non-magic way.

What would reporting the rot consist of? Would we have to leave and come back, or would we make a phone call with a pay phone or such?

[X]Try to sneak in through the back

This explains the plague, from the moment a well appeared in the story i suspected something similar.

We should not go down the well, we don't have really good physical stats and it could bee too dangerous. We also don't know if somebody would cut off our rope behind us, like Ternasta said.

Better to explore the house before reporting anything to the authorities, we don't want some poor schmuck coming to check the well only to come face to face with an eldritch mostrosity.

A pay phone would be your best bet for calling it in without leaving

Wasn't this set in the 20's? I am not sure pay phones were invented yet.

I'm not convinced the well isn't supernatural, so I'm still opposed to reporting it. Regardless, we can't report it until we leave the area and there's still exploring to do.

Inside the House
You still had things you wanted to check before you investigated what was down the well. You still hoped there would be more clues as to what had happened to the professor there. The water being contaminated explained the plague, if still something you wanted to check further. But you knew that what had happened here wasn't entirely natural. The occult had touched here, either through the professor accidentally inviting something or something purposely called and lost.

You aren't great with locks, but you managed to fiddle with the back door enough that it broke open and let you enter in. You could smell rot and urine from further ahead, likely the room the professor had been trapped in. The kitchen was a barren waste in comparison. Everything had been emptied, except the waste in the trash. Bottles of rotgut piled around the sink.
