Now I know you guys are I excited to become canon batman, and I have to wonder why, let's change things up a little.
I propose we go Bruce Wayne. Sure, we'll probably still have a secret identity and make a suit to fight crime in, but what if we go all in on Learning/Stewardship/Intrigue? Business Batman. Stop crime before it even happens with financial incentives, and in case of emergency break out the Iron Batsuit.

Kathy Kane because she's a very intelligent woman, who can serve as more direct muscle. We could bring her in on our crusade early on.
No one deserves that, because the Diplomacy boost is nice, and a solid heroic core is needed for a Batman. Although I was tempted by "He had it coming." and its Stewardship boost.
Forensic Accounting because the more efficiently we can stop crime, the better. An ultimate investigator who can catch Capone by his taxes, and a business man who can stop crime before it starts by using his savvy to make the world a better place. Batman may have done this in canon, but we'll do it even better.

Joker's more on the legal system than Batman tbh. City practically famous for its corrupt cops, but not one of them is willing to take him round the bend and shoot him? But, regardless, fair enough in regards to the compassion and its limits.
As for the romance....eh. I'm not a shipper, I find the concept somewhat boring.

It is also something of a way to protect oneself in Gotham. The amount of Sorcery going on just off screen is kind of crazy. Plus no one expects the normal guy to summon a shoggoth to fight the Demon.
If theres any reason to learn magic its to have a legit reason for why Batman can just vanish mid conversation sometimes

Merciful Magical Batman... Almost sounds like a magical girl. So like. I'd also be fine with forensic accounting, that could be really fun (plus, Riddler!) BUT: Bruce is a theater kid. Giovanni Zatara is a stage magician who also uses actual magic. We could have Magical Girl Merciful Batman.

I'm honestly on either side of the events. Just and Merciful are equally good traits. Focusing on the innocent (Just) or even just reaching out a helping hand and stopping blood from being shed (Merciful) are both interesting picks more than the vengeance driven 'canon' Batman.
