Maybe let's wait before reading MORE eldritch knowledge and focus on the case at hand.
But it usually ends so well... :V
By the way, this paintings gives me some Shub-Niggurath vibes.

[X]Ask about Professor Ashley's disagreements with Professor Herbert

I imagine Miskatonic University as a quite, peacful and respectable place. Yes, there are some extravagant students and professors, but eventually they admit that their wild theories are a pure game of imagination or disappear without trace otherwise. Yes, there are some strange incidents once or twice in a year, but nothing that a stubborn strong and biased logical mind can not rationalize.

[ ]Look into news archives for what has been written about Professor Herbert's travels in the past-perhaps he brought something back that didn't get along with him

still think we should check the news, but yeah, let's do more investigating first

[X]Ask about Professor Ashley's disagreements with Professor Herbert
[X] Next go to the Asylum and talk to the professor if he's better and gently bring up Necronomicon.
-[X] Tell him there is a plague ravaging the city and he must help put a stop to it.
-[X] Tell him you know how dangerous it is and you must know what happened with his research. What did he stumble upon?

Truth and Fantasy
Luckily for you Professor Ashley was still willing to talk with you. He was looking at you more carefully, clearly having decided that as a sensitive artist you didn't quite have the constitution for the heavier aspects of research. You did your best to apologize, but he brushed it off as being overwhelmed by the more earthy realities of what field research could produce. You did ask him what his disagreement with Professor Herbert Cowan had been, and learned that the disagreement at its heart was about Professor Herbert believing that there was true meaning in the necronomicon and Professor Ashley recognizing it as a poor copy of what he described as fairy tales. "It's not even the original document, how much worth can it have? And he lost himself researching it!" Professor Ashley ranted.

Oliver is just a easily overwhelmed sensitive artist. Yes, right.
Professor Ashley must have a really impressive grasp on sanity. That or is already really insane just in a functional way.

One step at a time. We have a time frame so this shouldn't take forever.

We have lost a lot of time without any significant breakthroughs. We don't know anything about the plague at all which is bound to grow worse at this rate.

It's a bit telling the penality for the Necronomicon was losing time rather than sanity..

A s I said, stubborn strong and biased logical mind can create miracles! It was a simple swamp gas explosion, after all.

Archives of Travel
You headed down to the local newspaper and asked the editor to see the archives. The man was jovial and more than happy to do so in exchange for running a small piece on your rise to success as an artist. You would have to come back to give him that interview later.

Archive Search Roll: 19

You had expected it to take you some time to find the articles on the professor, given that the trips would have been in different years. It turned out that the previous articles had recently been dug out after the professor had ended up in the newspaper for running through the streets covered in filth and being carted off to the insane asylum. You quickly sat down and began to look through his travels.

The first article in 1898 detailed a trip to China's Yellow River to study one of the ancient civilizations that lived along there. It was a relatively quiet trip with a report of the professor cheerfully talking about the potential research finds. The next trip was in 1905 in an expedition to document the findings of a royal vault in India that lead to Professor Herbert's discovery of the necronomicon. This followed up with a brief article in 1907 about the professor being suspended for a time for getting into a physical altercation with another professor.

Professor Herbert Cowan's next trip was to Africa in 1911 to search for a lost artifact. The newspaper reported with some amusement how he upset the locals and found himself forced to return empty handed. Another trip to India came in 1916, cut short when two of the students brought on the expedition perished in a cave-in. The final article was a small notice of the professor's retirement after a successful career.

[X]Check on the professor's neighbors to see if they are also ill

First we check to see if the neighbors know anything, then we check the house.

If we can't find a soulution quickly, we will have to check the professor notes as a last resort.

[X]Visit the professor's home
-[X] Bring the ingredients for Water of Forgiveness, just in case.

Just in case we get trapped too or such.

Instead of going directly to the Professor's home and potentially the source of the plague.. completely unprepared, does it really hurt just to ask him? Even if he isn't coherent yet we get some clues.

-[X] Tell him you know how dangerous it is and you must know what happened with his research. What did he stumble upon in his trip?
-[X] Hint about some of your experiences with the Supernatural and how you have dealt with threats before if you think it will put him at ease.
-[X] Follow up on Emily and the portrait after the conversation if nothing comes up.

We also should follow up on Emily, who was looking over the portrait while we investigate..
