The necronomicon. You were fairly sure you had heard of the book before, but you weren't actually sure where. It did seem like a possible lead on whatever might have tagged back with Professor Hebert, so you were swift to request to view the copy that he had brought back.
Professor Ashley wasn't too pleased with the request. This wasn't because of personal dislike, or argument with Professor Hebert Cowan. No, this was because he saw you as someone worthwhile and prestigious, and he didn't want you falling into similar follies as Professor Hebert had in researching the blasted thing. You persuaded him that you would be careful, and had experience dealing with such things thanks to your connections, and he gave in to let you see it.
It was immediately obvious that this book had been crafted with power. Interestingly, the book did not seem to possess power in and of itself, merely traces from its creation. The leather covering the book didn't have writing on it, but opening it you could see runes carefully stitched along the edges.
The inside of the book was both disappointing and intriguing. It was very obvious this was an incomplete copy. The page numbers jumped around, only numbering around 200 available in the book. Many of the pages were torn, or so stained that they were unreadable. You skimmed through the ones you could read, picking up on sentences speaking of gods and essesnces beyond time, and old rituals. There were sketches and diagrams that you could tell were copies, as they didn't fit all the dimensions that they should have onto the paper. You could feel your hands itching to draw it yourself and correct it.
You found a spell to turn a man into an animal, the spell burning into your mind as you stared at the grotesque imagery of a man in agony slowly changing forms over the course of several days into a sheep. You needed-you needed-
