Within a few hours, Hazō had pulled enough iron ore to the surface to keep Leaf supplied for a year, and then he was free to go.
Gigachadzō moment. It feels so good.

Small patches of diamond shimmered in the sunlight. No matter. Experiment performed, lesson learned.
You just gonna leave those lying around, man?

Sadly, for whatever reason, he'd been unable to extract more of the corundum from granite. Try as he might, he felt no hints of that particular mineral in the MEWs he summoned. Maybe it was a quirk of the particular location in the Seventh Path he'd tried it in.
Hahahahaha oh man. When I read this I was like, 'oh shit, ES functionality is path-dependent? that makes it so much more challenging to reverse engineer'

But turns out it's just a retcon lmao

It was a reddish-brown stone, smooth all the way through. Experimentally, Hazō tried aligning it, causing it to slowly form triangular and rhomboidal chunks.
This is feldspar, I assume.

Hazō dropped the stone, then sat down to think. Was the Great Seal made from granite?
The Sage of Six Paths was the original Mr. MEW lmao

(I bet his brother made fun of him for it too)

(and that treatment had only intensified as his plans to begin construction grew steadily less credible)
I'm doing what I can, Hazō.

But… he could have Reo cast MARI to produce hundreds of tons of granite, turn it into bricks of quartz and the exotic blue-green Great Seal stone, then build an estate truly beyond compare in the entire Path.
Oooh that sounds interesting. How long do we thing it would take to earthshape all that stone?

"What went wrong?" Cannai asked.

"Chakra," Hazō said.
Our eternal foe

"Did you not say that your Alpha himself laid eyes upon the Dragons? Would he not act on your behalf here? For all your skills, Summoner, it is my understanding that you are not the strongest warrior of your people."

Hazō inclined his head. "That… is a good idea, Cannai. I'm not sure whether the people he sends will do it right, but they could be a resource."
I am strongly in favor of telling Asuma and getting him to solve this problem for us, but last time I brought it up a lot of people wanted to keep PS secret from him or something. I'll probably lobby for it again, though.

"They are different," Cannai said eventually. "Similar, but different. They are of a different material, but there is another difference that the landsense cannot tell, but I can. The chakra in this one," he said, nosing at the quartz chunk, "is free. It is natural, raw, chaotic, and disordered. It has no unity, no purpose, no will guiding it to act. Whereas the chakra in this one," he said, nosing to the crystal from the cave, "is more unified. There is an evenness to it. And as you said, there is an area between its two sections where the unity of one and the unity of the other are disjointed."
Thanks, Cannai! This is just the kind of helpful commentary we come to you for.

"No. Not unless you transform yourself into an animal and become the leader of a Seventh Path clan. If you elect to do so while pursuing the deeper mysteries of the Paths, I request that you pick a clan whose leader is already unpleasant. Perhaps you could be Cat. Or Pangolin."
Goals!

"Before you go, Summoner," Cannai said, "I do want to commend you. The Dragons are the Seventh Path's problem first and foremost, but you dedicate yourself to fixing it, all while shouldering your clan's burdens simultaneously. It is not an easy task, but it is a task fit for a hero. That you need to undertake it so young is a tragedy, and that you are able to walk around as if you've had worse days is an achievement in its own right. Do not despair, Hazō. You will have the strength to overcome these burdens and rise beyond them, in time. Until that day comes, know that you continue to have my deepest gratitude for the work you've done to try to save my Path."
It would be really amusing if Hazō becomes known as a reviled traitor on the Human Path and a legendary hero on the 7th Path...

"Look, it was a better idea than asking me to 'grow you more crystal'.
Yeah, I was worried about that. I'm not sure that people in the Elemental Nations actually know that (some) crystals grow through deposition of compounds dissolved in water.

"Alright, well it's not something my bloodline can sense," Noburi said, crossing his arms. "The chakra sense just isn't like that, Hazō. I can't tell when someone's boosting either, or when they're molding chakra for a ninjutsu. I can only tell you where the chakra is and how much there is."
He didn't get any more feedback from the chakra crystal? They did try the chakra crystal, right, and not just a rock?

"But… that's fine, Hazō. I thought about it, and you're fixing all these problems that aren't really your fault. Like the Dragons, or Konan killing Jiraiya, or whatever. So sure, the Yuno problem is your fault. Still, it's fine for someone else to fix your problems while you're busy cleaning up for the rest of us. That's the point of family isn't it? We don't need to be isolated individuals, each dealing with our own thing. We can work together and we end up stronger for it."
Thanks, bro 🥲

I need to find some suitably important mission that has a narrative around it, then use that to showboat to the Toads.
The Toads are just Eaglejarl

You're right that iron ores are minerals by all meaningful definitions. As a result, Hazō should be (and now is) able to manipulate iron ores as easily as any other earth-based material with Earthshaping.
Haha, yes! My pedantry paid off! I thought the QMs completely forgot about it, but it paid off. This feels so damn good!

since the civilians are clan, Shino will instruct them not to make any complaints to the council.
Gotta love loopholes.

Hazō is quite confident in his ability (possibly overconfident), and will just yolo no-prep it.
Well, I suppose I did say 'hazōpilot's judgement', and not 'hazōpilot's best judgement'. Perils of aiming for wordcount.

Holy shit, the postscript JUST KEEPS GOING

If Hazō attends these sessions reliably for the next six months and commits time approximately equal to one SC block per day, he will be eligible for a stunt called "Clan Head Training", with the expected narrative impact. Tentative mechanics: Add a bonus of +(Presence AB) to social skill checks.
I am definitely in favor of doing this and we should put it into a plan. Maybe vote in a few interludes about the lessons later, if any of the QMs would like to write them.

She also notes that the best thing Hazō could do is to be visibly devout to the Will of Fire – to do purification rituals and attend the Hagoromo's sermons and festivals – and to absolutely refuse (as much as he can) to interact with Hidan or anything resembling Jashinism at all.
I am also in favor of doing these things. Do the rituals, signal the signals, repair our reputation, no need to do anything halfway.

[X][Aburame] Spend 1 day per month making telescopes. (+50% production)

[X][Hyūga] Finalize the deal: Hazō will provide them with sapphire and diamond only, in exchange for a healthy income stream.

[X]Training Plan: Hazou Alertness 33 -> 37 (-142XP)

[X] Training Plan - Noburi: Mednin 40 -> 43 (126 XP)

*heavy breathing in Ino*

Why are we doing this, again?
We definitely cannot go with adoptees. Maybe only even Mari should come. If the mission area is close enough we could summon a few SC, refill them all, then go murder with ~five Hazo SC as backup too. No witnesses, not even dog summons.

Though if we do bring summons with us, we should have them be some spider summons so Noburi can refill Kagome while we're out on the mission. Kumokogo will do us a solid I'm sure.

Estate plan rules and my previous commentary for reference.

[X][Estate] A Good Foundation
Word Count: 294
  • Optimize with Mari, Kei, Snowflake, Gaku
  • Design
    • Inner compound to house Gouketsu ninja, host guests, protect archives and treasures
      • High-quality materials, decoration and ornamentation, tastefully showcase Gouketsu wealth
        • Decorate interiors with calligraphic specimens produced by Gouketsu sealmasters during calligraphy practice
      • Should be able to (once properly trapped) slow down attackers long enough to call reinforcements or escape
        • Consult with Kagome
        • Disguise this to the extent possible
      • Construct buildings out of stone, primarily Great-Seal-style feldspar
        • Avoid unaltered MEW granite or anything else ugly
        • Send GS-feldspar sample to Orochimaru, tell him we made it with ES, but it's ordinary rock, not infusable
      • Make room for future underground construction
      • Reference Leaf architectural traditions, without slavishly imitating them
      • Art paying homage to Toads, Dogs, and Spiders
      • Plentiful gardens
        • Request Ino's advice about language/subculture of plant choice
        • Include statues of Leaf's fallen heroes, holding daybright seals aloft
    • Civilian district surrounding inner compound
      • Well-built, but not extravagant

I'm doubtful we can do these from inside of Leaf unless Hazou is appointed the Urban Planner for the entire city. An aqueduct might be possible just outside of Leaf, but then it wouldn't belong in an estate plan

@MadScientist I remember liking your estate plan as well, if you post it I'll vote for it.

[X][Aburame] Spend 1 day per month making telescopes. (+50% production)
[X][Hyūga] Finalize the deal: Hazō will provide them with all gemstones of their choice, in exchange for a massive income stream. Hazō will need to do some missions as a result.

Ino agrees to take 2 days-worth of Goo Bombs per month (either Hazō or Kagome's). In exchange, Ino will arrange some minor social plots to rehabilitate Hazō's reputation. She notes that the Hagoromo were careful to only target Hazō, not Gōketsu in general, so as to avoid the risk of being accused of trying to start a clan war. She also notes that the best thing Hazō could do is to be visibly devout to the Will of Fire – to do purification rituals and attend the Hagoromo's sermons and festivals – and to absolutely refuse (as much as he can) to interact with Hidan or anything resembling Jashinism at all. Ino also will come on a Summoning Scroll hunt that lasts up to a month, and forfeit any claim to anything retrieved on the mission. She requests that Hazō be present.
To confirm, Ino wants 2592 Goo Bomb seals in exchange for:
  • Arranging "some minor social plots to rehabilitate Hazō's reputation"
  • One mission without looting rights lasting at most a month
@Paperclipped @eaglejarl @Velorien, am I interpreting her offer correctly?

I was envisioning a relatively short distance between the edge of the Gouketsu property and the city limits, during which the aqueduct could run parallel to a road, and the sewer underneath a road (or the sewer could just hook up to a septic tank somewhere on the property). Leaf isn't that large. It's like, 10,000 people or so, right?

Anyways, I'd take it out if I really needed the wordcount, but at this point I figure it's worth a shot.

[X] Action Plan: Gruesome Errands
Words: 299
  • Kumokogo
    • Request bodyguard summons for Kagome/Hazo.
    • Mites for long distance travel?
    • Either of H/K dying would be disastrous, and we must take missions.
    • Is there anything she needs from us? Border disputes, dangerous ktthsss in the area that Hazo could help drive away?
  • Asuma
    • Leadership lessons, hang out, enjoy company. Ask after his welfare.
    • Remind him Hazou will always help him out if he really needs it, politics be damned.
    • Request a nearby bandit suppression mission to appease Hidan.
  • The suppression mission.
    • Optimize with Mari/Kei. Who to bring? How to avoid Jashinist issues?
    • Plan
      • Summon and refill several SC ( all wearing masks, including prime.)
      • Kagome summons mites to guard Hazo, Noburi refilling Kagome
      • Hazo+ summons/SC could go solo, or with Mari/Kei
      • Once in the OZ, summon dogs to track. Dispel before "combat".
      • Minimal witnesses.
  • Compound construction (all fine offscreen)
    • Traditional Leaf style
    • Hire artists to create murals depicting the Goketsu's story and connection to Leaf e.g. a mural depicting Hokages passing the torch from sensei to student, from Hashirama to Tobirama ect, all the way to Hazo, today.
      • Signaling "We are part of Leaf."
    • Build large, in anticipation of future growth.
    • Build luxurious everywhere
      • Signaling "Even the lowliest among the Goketsu is held high."
    • Build durable
      • Signaling "We're here to stay."
    • Build futureproof (Space for water utilities, space for gardens to be grown, ect)
  • Sealing
    • Prime SSA: MS8 Latching derivative. Full prep for first cycle then reevaluate.
    • SC SSA: Reusable Rocket Boots. Full prep then reevaluate.
      • Improve the seal until it challenges stagnation
      • Aim for six uses, and then boost the bonus as much as possible
    • Non-SSA SC
      • Abort any seal if it seems difficult at all, do not risk sealing failures
      • Research Dampener, no prep. Then 4FB with full prep.
      • Read Oro notes

Kagome is going to immediately notice how much better Hazos rocket boots are. RRB here we come, though!

[X]Training Plan: Hazou - A Little Less Alertness

Oh, are we doing these again?

[x] [Estate] Links
?/300 words
  • Kei/Mari/Gaku check all:
  • Design
    • Blend design elements from other clan compounds to represent the links to Leaf we have so far:
      • Uchiha, representing Hazou's ancestors.
      • Nara, representing Kei's marriage to Shikamaru.
      • Senju, representing Jiraiya's teammate (and Noburi's maybe-apprenticeship, but that's still early days).
      • Orochimaru's compound (he might feel slighted if we ref Tsunade but not him).
      • Sarutobi, representing Jiraiya's sensei.
      • Yamanaka, representing Hazou/Akane's relationship with Ino.
      • Our business partners, maybe?
        • Aburame
        • Hyuuga
    • Architects are also encouraged to invent creative and modern design elements — we're a research clan, after all.
    • Hire Shikamaru-recommended KEI-architects from NFF.
  • Construction
    • Hazou creates quartz for highlights.
    • Add gold filigree to important buildings.
    • Mosaics where appropriate.
  • Details
    • Hide Koi pond for FOOM OPSEC training.
    • Bathhouses.
      • Add waterslides. Archimedes screw, or tapped raised water-tank, to provide water-flow.
    • Great Hall suitable for larger (1000+ person) events.
      • Decorate with huge dragon skeleton carving.
      • Relief carvings of the summon clans we're contracted with. Leave space for future clans.

      • Statue of Hashirama with unique plants flourishing from his ninjutsu.
      • Add fruit trees to supplement food supply.
    • ES relief carvings that resemble 2D/3D sealing on surfaces to hide real seals in the noise.
    • Subterranean complex.
      • Civilian evac shelters.
    • Lampposts.
      • Statues holding daybright seals?
    • Monument to the Lost [Temporarily in Another Path].

      • Other Gouketsu VIPs (incl Gaku, hehe)
        • Gouketsu civilian engineers
      • Hazou's Uchiha ancestors pre-Kurosawa split (ask Sasuke for help).

Sadly, CAPS is Jaraiya-level difficulty.

Fortunetly, substitution seals will work just as well, if we can make a version that has less range, but replaces the strict "line of sight" requirement with "an unobstructed simple curve".

We then stack one set of rocket boots and a bunch of substitution seals on our feet.
After each RB activation use, CATEARS-activated substitution scrolls to substitute in a new pair of RB seals.

Alright @Sir Stompy, what did I overlook this time?
