@MadScientist I'm happy to pull this down etc. if you want to incorporate the changes; for now this seems like the easiest way to figure out the Will of the People etc.

[X] Action Plan: Exam Day (with some more details)
  • Mari/Kei/Snowflake:
    • Off-screen, apologize and extricate yourself from the conversation as gracefully as possible.
  • Take the sealing exam.
    • Prepare with Kagome beforehand. (Acquire tags.)
    • Ask a friendly Leaf sealmaster (Aburame? Sarutobi?) if there are any Leaf sealing exam traditions we should observe.
      • Formal dress? Arriving particularly early? Drinking the examiner under the table afterwards?
      • Tone: making sure we don't accidentally offend or overlook something we wouldn't know about.
      • Ask a specjonin if we can't find a suitable sealmaster. Not fishing for exam tips.
    • Crush the exam, but avoid appearing arrogant.
      • Be polite and respectful of the examiner.
      • Once there's no chance it'd be perceived as a bribe or otherwise inappropriate, offer a small (Mari-approved) token of appreciation for their time.
    • If possible, network a bit after the exam is done.
      • Again, stay polite and respectful. Don't pursue this if they don't appear interested, and avoid coming off like you're trying to sway their opinion/report.
      • Was an open problem discussed? Get their thoughts.
      • Were any questions particularly interesting? Go over those. If they came up with the questions, even better.
      • Ask about their research/specialties.
      • Get their one-on-one perspective on the Great Seal.
Explosive tags or fatepoint tags?
Yes.

The gift giving has a sanity-check so I will vote for it.

So did the edits I suggested. I'm confused as to why you disapproved of the suggested edits in that light. The content is effectively identical.
The key is this: the original version implied that the gift was going to be given regardless, and we were only seeking Mari's approval on what gift would be given. Your plan has us going to Mari getting her approval for giving the gift.

The wording was a Mari-approved gift.

If Mari does not approve of any gift, no gift will be given.

What in the original reads to you as 'give a gift even if Mari does not approve of the gift despite being very clear that the only gift to be given is one of which Mari approves'?

I'm moderately tempted to get the QMs in on this (probably not going to tag them but if you see this, please weigh in!) because this seems like a level of paranoia bordering on early-story Kagome.

I don't read it as "if Mari does not approve of any gift, no gift will be given."; I read it as "Hazou will insist on giving a gift and will solicit Mari's advice on which gift would be the best for the situation. If Mari does not approve of any gift, Hazou will still insist on giving a gift anyway."

Where are you getting anything about insisting on anything?

If a plan read 'give the instructor a lemon' and there were no lemon to be had, we wouldn't offer them a banana, even though they're both yellow fruits. Heck, we wouldn't offer them an orange, even though they're both citrus fruits, even if the orange was pretty yellow-y.

I'm sufficiently willing to die on this hill that I've edited the wording of the plan to specify that we're offering a Mari-approved gift. @eaglejarl, @Velorien, @Paperclipped, can you confirm that if Hazo cannot find a gift of which Mari approves, he will not offer a gift?

  • Take the sealing exam.
    • Prepare with Kagome beforehand. (Acquire tags.)
    • Aim to impress, but be polite and respectful of the examiner.
      • If Mari approves, offer a small gift to the examiner as a token of appreciation for their time. Do not do this until said gift has no chance of being perceived as a bribe or otherwise inappropriate.
