Jiraiya said he taught Konan at some point; does the Leaf Archive or whatever have information on her? Jiraiya's old notes? @eaglejarl @Velorien @Paperclipped ?
Leaf's Archives have nothing on her, but Jiraiya's old journals tell a part of her tale. After the Second World War, Jiraiya was spending some time in Rain to gather intel on Hanzō when he came across a group of war orphans fending for themselves in a corpse of an old village. Jiraiya had pity on them (from behind a disguise that he remembers as being quite impressive, though he can't quite remember why he was so confident he wouldn't be recognized in Rain so soon after gaining his lifetime moniker) and gave them some food and shelter. He quickly learned that two of them, Konan and another of the children named Yahiko, were almost fully trained in chakra manipulation, and gave them instructions to help them finish their training.

Rain was a hostile environment, so he gave Konan and Yahiko a position in his fledgling intelligence network. A few years later, as a parallel example of Jiraiya investing in assets he found useful, he trained Konan in the basics of sealwork. He made a few notes that grudgingly suggest (but never state) that she was brilliant, but he clearly found something about her attitude or demeanor intensely frustrating. She disliked his controlling attitude and the apprenticeship ended through joint resolution after only six months. He used her for mission work a few times before she disappeared off the map, along with Yahiko and their gaggle of civilian war orphans.

Thank you to everyone for your feedback on the drafted Frozen Skein rules, including the Combat Frozen Skein. Narratively, the Combat Frozen Skein is an acute and risky use of the bloodline, rapidly sinking into it to gain greater understanding, instead of accessing it normally and safely. For many rolls which can be spread out over time (e.g. setting traps or sneaking around), Frozen Skein will provide a bonus of (+FS AB). However there are a couple addenda to the Combat Frozen Skein that we want to add:

  1. When using CFS to get a bonus on a roll, you must continue using CFS for the entire duration of the roll. If searching for traps takes "half a minute", you would need to tap CFS 10 times at the desired bonus.
    1. Generally, CFS will only be useful on combat-speed rolls, because of the dangers of unrestrained Frozen Skein exposure.
  2. Every use of CFS increases your Apathy by at least 1. The end-of-combat roll to remove Apathy cannot lower it below (initial Apathy + # rounds active).
    1. You cannot get into a trivial combat, trigger CFS, then end the combat to reduce your amount of Apathy.
  3. Apathy gained from successful CFS rolls slightly increased from ⅕th to ¼th the target bonus (+5%).
  4. We didn't specify the action economy previously. Sinking into the Frozen Skein and activating the CFS state is a Supplemental. Gaining the benefit on all subsequent turns is a free action until the state is terminated as a Supplemental, which prompts the roll to take stress or remove Apathy.
  5. Frozen Skein bonuses cannot apply to certain types of rolls, subject to GM judgment – notably including socials.

With these, we'll be adding these new Frozen Skein rules to the Bloodlines doc.

Oh dear. Apologies, this is the apology speech Asuma ordered us to make. I can make it clearer in the plan if you wish?
Nope, looks like I failed to read all the way through, since down at the bottom it talks about recanting. My mistake.

Two thoughts:

1. Damnit, Hazō isn't going to make my badass speech. :(
2. This is a very well-written speech.

Speaking of XP we should probably figure out how we want to spend Kei's since she's just under 500 right now

If your badass speech wasn't likely to have unfortunate consequences for Hazou and co., I would just let you have it.

If I told you that it 100% would not have unfortunate consequences for Hazō or anyone that he likes, would you let me have it?

Honestly (and if it were up to me)? Yes

The constant concern that Hazou's foot in mouth disease will be the death of him really brings out our more conservative tendencies. Having a free break from those precautions for at least one update for sure would be cathartic.

Updates to the Shikamaru section of the plan - changing the tone.
[X] Action Plan: Life Carries On
Word count: <300
  • Timeline: <48 hours.
  • Leaf:
    • Tell Akane's parents. Support them.
    • Schedule an announcement.
    • Sanity check with Kei, Shikamaru, Kagome, Mari, Team Akane's families. Adjust seal bank if necessary. Run the speech/bank by Asuma, the KEI.
  • Speech:
    • Do the thing from FS's omake.
      • Make any necessary adjustments (e.g., no fake IN slip) to keep the core/spirit.
  • Shikamaru/Kei:
    • Invite Mari.
    • Venue: private.
    • Tone: Grieving. Trying to get caught up. Exhausted.
    • Hagoromo - where are we?
      • Ritsuo is at least indirectly culpable. Will Asuma handle this?
      • Are Goketsu in shit with Asuma? How deep?
    • Akane - her assailants and status.
      • Iron, Rice, Waterfall - anything?
      • Hidan once told us he can track anyone via their blood. We have Akane's blood, and Hidan likes us. Can we use that?
      • Kei, Akane's seal loadout may have been compromised. What does this mean for Goketsu and Leaf?
    • Can Ami help with any of this?
    • Orochimaru's probably going to kidnap Ren, figure out the Iron Nerve and solve 3D sealing.
  • The rest:
    • Optimize with Kei/Mari.
    • The Goketsu are not, under any circumstances, to escalate or retaliate against the Hagoromo.
      • Ruka will see consequences.
      • Anything we do will serve a purpose. Bar fights serve no purpose.
      • Clear all Hagoromo interactions/ongoing plots with Mari.
      • Channel your grief and rage into productive endeavors. Talk to each other. Support each other. Mourn. Grieve. But don't be stupid.
    • Thank Naruto: he authorized the mission and Skywalkers.
    • Apologize to Lee. We snapped. He didn't deserve that.
    • Earthshape a (jade?) statue of Akane (ES 50).
    • Catch up on paperwork.
    • Spend time with friends, family.
    • Grieve.
  • Sealing Research
    • If Kagome approves (Hazo's mental state etc.) research Directional Explosives/the next Minato seal.
      • Eschew prep, use SSA, reroll -9/-12 on Sealing/Calligraphy rolls.

If I told you that it 100% would not have unfortunate consequences for Hazō or anyone that he likes, would you let me have it?
Honestly, no. It seems petty and well beneath Hazo. It doesn't actually advance any of our agendas and it isn't anything Hagoromo don't already know.

Who does it help? It reads like pointless lashing out, and I don't want Hazo to be the sort of person who pointlessly lashes out or lowers himself to the level of his foes.

If we're going to do or say something, let's make it meaningful. This is just...immature?
