The Lumber does 2 things:
-Provides enough Rare Qi(Music) infused Wood for a large scale construction
-This also happens to be enough for a personal-scale music instrument, because even the largest man portal guitar is a rounding error to the lumber used for constructing a building.
And from this, it sounds like one of the resolution options for the quest is having Qi infused construction materials on hand.
Since the root cause is that there is a hole breached to the Underground Impurity Zone, we'd probably have to seal the hole somehow, since we can't afford to park one of our Greens as sentry, and caving it in is...messy and disruptive to site quality.
You can't really fix a hole by being very murder after all.
