"Thank you for shopping at Ann-Mart. Have a nice day!" You said in a fake cheerful voice, trying your best not to yawn.
You had less than four hours of sleep last night. Then you had to march off to school. Pretend everything was normal. Play the role of the nice, friendly, harmless teenage girl you were. Nothing out of the ordinary. Because you had absolutely nothing to do with the violent deaths of over thirty hardened gangsters at the docks last night.
"What's that book about?" A customer noticed the old book you had next to the cash register. An inquisitive middle-aged woman, who clearly had nothing better to do than make small talk with an overworked grocery store cashier.
None of your damn business. You forced yourself to smile. "Oh, it's nothing interesting. Just an old store ledger. Thank you for shopping at Ann-Mart. Have a nice day, ma'am!"
You hated your job. The hours sucked, and you got paid minimum wage. But you needed the money, so you plastered on a fake smile and went through the same, monotonous routine every shift.
Most teenage superheroes came from wealth. Sons of oil sheikhs. Daughters of billionaires. Second-generation heroes or nepo babies who were born for this life. None of them had to work retail to pay the bills.
On the other hand, pretty much every teenage supervillain came from a low-income background. Grew up in an orphanage. Daddy beat them. Ran away from home. Child abuse survivor. That was how their backstories usually went.
You never met your father. Your mom was an alcoholic who struggled to keep a steady job. You have had to look out for yourself since you were a kid. In other words, you had the perfect backstory for a bitter, vengeful supervillain. Yet you still decided to choose the path of a superhero for some inexplicable reason.
That said, you were still far from a girl scout. You had taken several grands of drug money off the dead gangsters last night. Chump change for A-list superheroes, but more than several months of your salary. You could finally afford to take a day off work. Pay overdue utility bills. Not worry about having to skip meals for a while.
Stop feeling guilty, Ciara. You tried to convince yourself that you made the right choices last night.
