[X] Go outside to hear Risa's proposition
There's a very cute girl holding your hand and asking you to come outside to talk with her, and you can either do that, or you can hang around to watch a duel that isn't particularly important to you.
It's not even a question which option you're going to go with.
"Hey Koyo, I'm gonna go get some fresh air, that duel was pretty intense! Don't you lose before I get back in here, you hear me?" you call as you knock on the glass wall of the Battle Box to let your friend know what's going on.
He turns towards you and flashes a thumbs up, an amused smile crossing his face as he sees that Risa is already heading outside. Koyo shoots you a cheeky wink before turning back to face his opponent, the unflappable blonde not even glancing in your direction as she shuffles her deck.
Throwing one last look over your shoulder as you hurry outside, you see Tilla drawing her first card.
You're sure Koyo will be fine, he can handle himself. You have more important things to focus on right now!
As you step outside, you blink your eyes a couple of times to adjust to the change in lighting, and look around to spot Risa standing just off to the side of the shrine's main entrance. She's nervously rubbing her ankle with her other foot, but she's looking straight at you with a look that tells you she's got something on her mind.
You have several hopeful thoughts about what it might be she's thinking of, but there's only one way to find out, so you wander over to her and lean up against the wall of the shrine, glancing at her before turning away to study the clouds in the sky, embarrassed to make eye contact for too long.
"Hey."
Smooth, real smooth.
Luckily though, it doesn't seem like Risa really minds. She giggles a little, before grabbing your arm in order to get you to focus on her again.
"You're a really good duelist Ryuzaki. I mean, I knew your reputation, but that was really fun!"
She pauses for a moment to think about what she wants to say, but doesn't take long to continue.
"I think you're gonna qualify for the finals and get into that castle over there, so I have a favour to ask you, Ryuzaki."
That gets your attention. She wants you to do her a favour? With a cute little smile like that and those soft eyes, you'd gladly do her a million favours!
"Before I ask you though, I think I should tell you why I'm here on the island. We all have something we're looking for here, but for me it wasn't the fame or prize money, I don't think I'd really stand a chance in competition against the best."
Now she's looking a little more serious, and you turn your body more fully towards her to show you're listening, even if you are slouched against the wall.
"So I was approached by this company called SIC, it's unlikely you'd have heard of it but it's a cutting edge company that deals with lots of modern technology. Anyway, turns out that these holographic Battle Boxes being used at this tournament? They've got a lot of people really scared, Ryuzaki. Like, proper scared," she adds seriously.
Oh. Oh. This isn't going to be some flirty conversation or a make-out session like you'd hoped. Totally not cool. Ugh.
"Kaiba Corporation used to be this big war machine military company before the change in leadership saw a turn towards the entertainment industry, and it has a lot of money and power behind it. This new holographic technology is way beyond any tech that's out on the market right now and with all that funding and contacts backing up this new tech, KaibaCorporation stands to absolutely monopolise the entertainment industry with holograms."
"The reason SIC approached me is because if KaibaCorporation gets the chance to produce these holographic components unchecked and unrivalled, it's going to hurt SIC really badly. And not just SIC either, this sort of revolutionary technology held in the hands of just one business could mean financial ruin for a whole lot of smaller companies. Plus the flow-on to other electronics companies, manufacturing, it goes on…"
Risa looks pensive for a moment, giving you a chance to process her explanation. You kind of get what she's saying, KaibaCorp's new hologram technology is almost sure to let them dominate the market and put a bunch of other companies out of business. You're sure it's a bit more complex than that, but you'd have to be a moron to think that actual genuine holographic projector technology would do anything other than massively shake up the electronics and entertainment industries in a big way.
"And it's not just that too. This sort of holotech, even if it is relatively basic, is perfect for military uses. Training simulators, strategic overlays, plenty of other things that the SIC guy explained that I didn't really follow. If KaibaCorporation controls the hologram technology exclusively, then with its existing links to the military industrial complex it's sure to become super entrenched and hard to ever deal with."
You square up a little, grabbing Risa by the wrist to stop her there. You look into her eyes, sure that the seeds of confusion and impatience you're feeling must show in your face.
"Okay, wow, Kaiba's holograms are super smart and are gonna put some companies out of business, but what's that got to do with you, and especially what's it got to do with me?" you respond curtly. Risa can't help but laugh a little at that.
"You're really cut up that I didn't pull you out here to kiss you, huh?" she shoots back, surprisingly not sounding angry about your interruption, but more amused that you'd respond so… predictably. Your glare conveys that you're not as amused by that as she appears to be, so she shakes your hand off her wrist and continues.
"Alright, so back to me then. This guy from SIC came to me and explained this whole situation, and advised me that he had a proposition for me. Up until now, access to that holographic technology has been super restricted, since it's only been used in Kaiba Land, or in situations like the Magic & Wizards Japanese National Championship, where there were only a handful of battle boxes and they were watched over like a hawk. But this tournament, it's different. A bunch of battle boxes scattered all over this island, with duelists having free access to them any time they want. If you're somebody hoping to get a chance to look at the inner workings of this new holographic technology, there's absolutely no better opportunity than now."
"So… he offered to pay me some decent money if I could just maybe get some photos of the inner circuitry, maybe remove a couple of the internal components from one of these tables, and bring them back to SIC to study the technology," she concluded hesitantly.
You furrow your brow as you try to reach for the right words in your head. Risa's only here to steal the secrets of KaibaCorporation's holographic technology? But that would make her…
"You're a spy?" you ask lamely. You know there's a better term for it than that, but no chance you can think of it right now.
"Yeah, I guess. Corporate espionage is what they call it, I think," Risa responds, looking away from you uncertainly.
"Uh, okay, but then why are you telling me this?"
Risa takes a deep breath as she braces herself for the whole point of dragging you out here in the first place.
"Because I want your help with this. I've been able to take some photos and I have some good stuff here, but these battle boxes, they're just terminals. SIC suspected that might be the case but I wasn't sure until I got a look at them myself. They're too compact to contain all the necessary computational equipment for formatting and composing the holograms, they just project them. All of the battle boxes are linked to main servers somewhere nearby that do most of the heavy lifting, in terms of data and software, and I'm pretty sure those servers are secured inside that," she concludes, as she points off in the distance, over the hill and the meadow you were in before, right towards the most obvious landmark on the island.
Pegasus' grand castle, overlooking the whole Kingdom.
"You know the rules, only people with 10 Star Chips can enter the castle. I have none, and you have nine, so I'm thinking you've got a lot better chances of getting in there than I do."
Your stomach feels funny, kind of heavy but also flipped upside down and inside out.
"You don't have to help me out, of course, but if you do I can definitely make it worth your while. If you're able to get any decent photos or downloads of the server data, or even just a decent look at how they're all organized there, I can pay you US$10,000."
Your jaw drops.
A US$10,000 payday? That's…. That's a whole lot of cash! That'd help your mum out a lot with her bills, and you could use some of that to invest in upgrading your deck too!
"What do you say, Ryuzaki? It'd mean a lot to me if you'd help me out!"
Risa's sunny smile and hopeful eyes make your knees turn to jelly, and you're suddenly assailed with a whirlwind of conflicting thoughts.
[ ][Spy] "Yeah, I can definitely help you out for that kind of money! Just get inside and snoop around a bit when I'm not duelling? Shouldn't be a problem!"
[ ][Spy] "I dunno, it sounds kind of risky… I can keep my eyes open, and if I get the opportunity I'll see what I can do, but no promises."
[ ][Spy] "You want me to steal information on KaibaCorp tech? No way, I'm not a thief, even if the victim is a big corporation!"
[ ][Spy] "Nah, I can't do that for you, but hey, if you stick around with me maybe I can get you inside the gates as my plus one?"
[ ][Spy] Write-in.
Regardless of your response to Risa, how does it feel knowing that this cute, flirtatious girl is on this island to do criminal deeds?
[ ][Feel] It's fine, you suppose? What she chooses to do has no bearing on your conscience.
[ ][Feel] You're mad! She led you on and she's doing the wrong thing by stealing secrets!
[ ][Feel] Definitely scared that this whole thing is gonna get you in trouble somehow. You're not super concerned by her espionage, you're just worried it's gonna cause you issue.
[ ][Feel] A bit flattered, actually. This sort of thing could get her in trouble if the wrong person found out, but she's not just confiding in you, she wants to recruit you.
[ ][Feel] kinda hot ngl, you like the idea of a rebellious girl doing a big corporation dirty and getting paid for it too
[ ][Feel] Write-in.
[Side-quest triggered! A Corporate Spy on the Island]
Hey, I'm back from my hike! It was super beautiful, and well worth the effort.
So, here's your update. For those predicting Risa was going to mug you for your cards or star chips, nope! Just a moral dilemma for you with a major potential payoff if you're willing to be a bit ethically flexible and aren't too fussed at how this might hurt a possible megacorporation like KaibaCorp or the elite who run it. Is Ryuzaki the purest good boy or is he a decent guy who'll bend a bit to help his family out and impress a hot girl?
As for why this seemingly odd sidequest opportunity? Well, in the Toei episode where Risa Kageyama appears, she drags Yugi down to her basement to duel her and has a holotable down there, at a time when the tech is brand new, not even unveiled at Death-T, so presumably only available to Kaiba and those he provides it to, like his Game Masters. So is her dad a high-ranked employee at KaibaCorp? Are the holotables commercially available but stupidly expensive, implying she and her sisters are horrifically rich? Or did they somehow get wind of the holotables and build an unauthorised knock-off/steal one? Whatever the reason, the Toei anime is not canon to this quest, but did serve as an influence so she has connections to Kaiba's holotech being rare and valuable.
Sorry that the update is so short, I was going to continue it on further but I figure that between Ryuzaki's response and his feelings on what Risa has just told him, interactions between the two of them could go vastly different so better to just leave it there instead of wrestle for some kind of vague middle ground that doesn't contradict any of the options.
