I was tempted to vote for building and was amused by the idea of them building without fully understanding what they were doing, like trained animals or toddlers putting up a house, but went for understanding the Song. Seems useful to have more decentralized intelligence kicking in instead of relying on a mix of instincts and semi-conscious actions.

Drat, I'm having to change my vote because people clearly can't see the magnificence of Digging. Instead they want to sit around all day and listen to music of all things...
Which means I'm going to have to change to the runner up vote of Climbing. It's not as perfect as digging, but being able to dig straight down due to being able to climb steeper walls, as well as continue digging when the floor of the tunnel is dangerous, such as being lava, means it's at least okay.

The Queen envisioned the form her newest child would take. It would have a bulbous mind and a series of spines to better hear and understand the Song. Her head rose and fell in a steady rhythm as she Sang to it, and strange organs within her began to stir, crackling with strange energies, the mind and will of the Swarm providing them with unnatural energies they used to reshape flesh and rewrite genes.
Even as she learned to change her children to better serve the Swarm, the existing workers labored, with many ambitions for the Hive, from filled biomass reserves to vast farms to mighty fortifications to simple things like a more comfortable chamber for the Queen or some delicious fruits for them all to share.

If digging down is becoming problematic for now, time to dig sideways. And upwards soon. Hopefully the hills nearby have some of that shiny and cool not-stone that the Song mentions.
