This update was really great! It brought the strong bittersweetness I associate with this quest and its predecessor. Finding humanity in war.

Because Kana needs to be better at getting into trouble. Getting away from hull-cracker bombs may also be especially valuable for her.

In an actual fight against an ace, all of these are largely irrelevant, but at least acceleration will likely get us a mention. Ranged means they have to effortlessly dodge one more time, which might buy us maybe a tenth of a second, the same with melee and them actually having to manoeuvre their sword around ours rather than just stabbing, while accel will be maybe a whole half-second of them commenting that our speed won't help us while they magically get more thrust from the a(c)ether.

If we somehow win? Maybe we can shoot them in the back while they have locked swords with Jay? Or be the one competent sword that gets through when they are mobbed by dozens of mooks? Or we reverse thrust unexpectedly and they fly past us into an ambush?

That said, given that all options are equally good, I would imagine that melee lets us defend others and be more impressive in more chaotic battles, ranged lets us suppress and pick off others and be a bit more controlled, but will leave us a bit out-of-depth once things descend into a melee, while acceleration will probably have us be the go-to one for special positioning, and prone to getting out ahead of our allies or rushing in to be a hero, but having less direct influence in the fighting itself.

I like the idea that after the ship-cracker, Cam figured it was just best to try to keep Kana out of close range fighting as much as possible.

I figure if we're gonna be on the hull of an enemy ship to pop it open, we're gonna need a good stabbing hand when someone inevitably comes to knock us off the ship. EDIT: Plus, let's face it, nothing is actually keeping us out of trouble, Cam knew that. So she just made sure we were prepared for trouble when it comes.

    • The difference between Kana and Amani there is that Kana is a fundamentally cynical/pessimistic person about that kind of shit. So of course things are going to go bad soon and we might all die, that's why I'm drinking and hanging out with my boyfriend now. Amani just like... has this need to operate on the assumption that there's going to be a tomorrow, because she copes through throwing herself into her duties and working toward concrete goals.

    They're usually both right, historically.

    Oh, suddenly things make sense. I was really confused when I saw the number of remaining updates go down without anything sufficiently dramatic looming on the horizon and eventually just decided I had misremebered the category. Without this post I would not have realized that there actually is another quest:V
