My reasoning: The quest is basically an harem anime in the setting: that is the only thing we know about it, so the plot is just that it is a harem anime. While there are a couple in which they can be played seriously from the romantic angle, they usually don't have that as the main draw. Thus, if the only draw is how entertaining the race for MC's heart is... Well, let's make it as funny as possible.
I propose we go full gag manga. Ranma 1/2 levels of awfulness, without worrying about morals other than it being entertaining (so being cruel or awful for awfulness sake to the competition is out, but sabotage is fine as long as it is done in a funny way). And that means that it doesn't matter that much how effective we are at gathering his affections but that we try and go ham while doing it.
