Land of the Free (XVII century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Quest)

@Sertorius can we look for items in the markets that increases CHA? Also do they stack or do we have to pick the highest i.e. a feathered hat CHA +2 or billowing cape CHA +2?
You will get a list of items and what they do, their quality depending on the results of the roll.

As for stacking, you can use as many of the items at the same time as you want. Of course, there are logical limits. You can't wear two hats, three capes and four rapiers for instance.

-[X] Hire local nobles – Warsaw and the surrounding countryside are full of poor, landless nobles trying to make a living. You can hire some of them out to escort you to your destination. Most with any wits about them are armed with sabres, firearms, have personal mounts and know how to fight. Unless you're really unlucky and only find some of those unfortunates wearing wooden helmets for protection with rusty old sabres passed on from their grandfathers… at least they are relativity cheap. [10 ZŁ per person hired]
-[X] Keep Sapphire Brooch - While its former owner is not a man you would be glad to see again anytime soon, the brooch seems nice enough to keep and use. [+1 CHA while equipped]
-[X] No, we shall wait! - The roads are full of snow and who knows, maybe brigands as well. Traveling with wagons full of supplies invites danger now more than ever. Worse, something might happen along the way and you will be forced to abandon one or all of them and that could spell disaster. Better to wait out the current weather for a more opportune time to travel. [you shall spend the rest of January in Warsaw]
-[X] Recruit Irish Officers - While technically you can't barge into a tavern or town square announcing a recruitment drive with drums playing, it doesn't mean you can't look for qualified help among the locals. You can try and focus your attention towards your own countrymen, hoping that there are some Irishmen with the knack for leadership present. Of course, this will be much harder to achieve. [CHA based; search for officers of Irish descent]
-[X] Browse the local market - It may be winter, but merchants of various provenance are still very much present. You may use this opportunity to see if they have anything interesting to buy for your own personal use. Who knows, maybe you you can get yourself some new cloths or a shiny new weapon? [STE based; look for various items for personal use; personal funds only]
-[X] Pay double – Offer the nobles or mercenaries double their regular pay, increasing your chances of finding help and getting better quality soldiers hired. Plus, it lowers the likelihood of them stabbing you in the back while you sleep. Your cargo is a tempting target after all. [nobles and mercenaries cost two times more; increases loyalty; better chances at recruitment in both quality and quantity]
-[X] Hard cap on recruitment – Set a hard cap on the number of nobles or mercenaries you intend to recruit. This doesn't mean you will reach the target given, only that if you have a large number of potential volunteers, they won't cost you a fortune. Without a hard cap, you will try and recruit as many men as possible, regardless of costs. [20]

On the one hand, I think it'd be more prudent to hire mercenaries.
On the other hand, hiring local nobles is just asking for some Pan Zagloba humor shenanigans
Hmm...

You made a quick hand gesture and within a few moments a trio of Polish noblemen standing at a respectable distance from you, approached. They were all wearing heavy capes and fur caps to ease the harsh touch of winter.

"Gentlemen, take these wagons to the stables outside of town. This is our cargo." you said firmly.

"Of course, sir." they answered and you all then promptly boarded them and started to ride towards the outskirts.

On your way back, you smiled, thinking about the work you had to do. These men were just the beginning of your escort. You decided to remain in the capital for the rest of the month, not wanting to risk the road while it is still full of snow. Warsaw had plenty of things to offer in the meantime. Capitalising on them would be a sound idea. You also gave the brooch a quick glance. While you did not find the man that gifted it to you a particularly charming fellow, it would be unwise to get rid of it. You did like it, what person wouldn't? Money was not an issue, so you might as well keep it for the time being.

[Hire local nobles: 76+10 (Pay double) = 86]
[Quality: 55+10 = 65]

You wisely decided to recruit some Polish nobles for the trip to Pomerania. As locals, they knew the country and hopefully the roads as well, allowing you to get to your destination without much qualms. If any brigands should decide to make a jump on your caravan, you were certain, that they'll provide adequate protection. At least that was the plan. Luckily for you, Warsaw taverns were full of poor noblemen looking for a chance to earn some coin and you happily obliged.

"How much?" asked a gruff looking nobleman with a black moustache and a scar running down his cheek. He was dressed in a faded Polish nobleman's attire, with a good looking sabre by his side and seemed to be a man, that knows how to take care himself in a fight.

"20 for the whole job. Each." you answered gulping down another pint of ale. Bloody hell were you thirsty.

"You hear that, Adam? It looks like we got ourselves a job!" the man said happily to his companion, a tall and brawny fellow with a thick, brown beard cowering his face and, by the looks of it, an equally thick skull. He was wearing a large fur coat, that made him akin to some sort of bear.

"Huh, a job? Like the one in Sokal, Michał?"

"No, dimwit! A good job this time! Have you even been paying attention?"

"Wha? To that pansy over there? Can I strangle him now, Michał?"

"Shut up, Adam! Please ignore my brother's stupid remark, sir! He's not feeling well today, that's all!" he said quickly in some pathetic attempt to save face.

You rolled your eyes.

"I'll take that as a yes, Sir Olechowski."

These two numskulls seemed to be the most competent volunteers you found during your search. While their clothing has seen better days and they could use a bath, they looked like a pair of people you could count on when things go south. The rest of the noblemen you recruited were mostly inexperienced poor farmers from the neighbouring villages, that came to Warsaw looking for a way to escape their miserable existence. You could understand them, for you had a similar background. Still, that gives you 10 men, all armed with firearms of various quality and sabres, somewhat trained and with their own horses to boot. Just to be on the safe side, you decided to dig deeper into your coffers and pay them extra so that no funny ideas shall pop into their heads while out on the road. The difference between a poor noble and a brigand is dangerously thin in this country.

Hiring Escort:

+10 men recruited!
(+2 Light Polish Cavalrymen – Experienced)
(+8 Light Polish Cavalrymen – Green)

-200 ZŁ (personal funds)

[Recruit Irish Officers: 24]

Unfortunately, luck wasn't on your side, when it came to looking for some of your fellow countrymen. Despite visiting the town square each day, drinking every evening in a different Warsaw tavern, asking and pleading, you simply couldn't find any Irishman good enough to be an officer. Not only that, you couldn't find any Irish at all! What's this world coming to? Have your countrymen found some better place to be than the capital? Or maybe you weren't thorough enough? It is winter after all and people aren't exactly eager to shiver in the cold outside. Whatever the reason, this means, that you still haven't got a single officer to share the burden of command with and you will need about two dozen of them to properly maintain your regiment.

[Improve your Skills: 90]

While resting in your room, you took the time to continue your studies of the art of war, using whatever papers you managed to bring along with you. This was standard practice since your time in France. Having never received any formal education, you achieved your current status through hard work, personal improvement and by reading day and night whatever books on the subject you could get your hands on. You decided to focus your attention on drills and training manuals. You are raising a regiment of soldiers after all and whatever knowledge you can add to the one already in your possession can be of great help. Thankfully, your studies are uninterrupted and by the end of January you managed to learn a few new tricks, that will help you in your mission.

+1 to Training Skill! (3/4)

[Anything interesting?: 23]

You spent the rest of the month without much happening, beyond the tasks you set yourself to do. While it didn't seem like a lot, you were surprised at just how much time (and ale) consuming they were. Polish nobles are infamous for their ability to drink giant amounts of alcohol and you had a hard time trying to keep up. Then again, supplementing your recruitment drive with copious amounts of booze has a long tradition, one that you took advantage of.

With the start of February, the weather improved somewhat. While the cold remained bitter, at least it wasn't snowing as profusely as during the last few weeks. Some profound changes did take place in Warsaw however. The King and his court have left the city by the end of the month. They went to Cracow for the coronation ceremony, which traditionally takes place in Wawel Cathedral in the old Polish capital. While the Coronation Diet was to begin on the 31st of January, the King couldn't be there on time. A few days after your meeting, he seemed to have fallen ill and it took him the rest of the month to recover. Now however, he felt well enough to travel again and he left the day before along with much of the foreign contingent present of Warsaw. This was proof, that the roads were open enough to travel once more and that you had to think about your future plans.

Will you travel to Royal Prussia now? [pick one]

[X] Yes, it's about time! – No time to waste, you have to reach Pomerania as soon as possible to start working on your regiment if your are to reach your quota on time! You have to find a place to camp, suitable officers, soldiers, drill your men, get a hold of more supplies… all this takes time! [move out of Warsaw immediately; locks out all other options below]

[X] No, we shall wait some more!
- The roads are full of snow and who knows, maybe brigands as well. Traveling with wagons full of supplies invites danger now more than ever. Worse, something might happen along the way and you will be forced to abandon one or all of them and that could spell disaster. Better to wait for a more opportune time to travel. [you shall spend half of February in Warsaw]

If having chosen to remain in the capital for half of the month, there are a few things you may do in the meantime. [pick three; each can be taken only once]

[X] Browse the local market - It may be winter, but merchants of various provenance are still very much present. You may use this opportunity to see if they have anything interesting to buy for your own personal use. Who knows, maybe you you can get yourself some new clothes or a shiny new weapon? [STE based; look for various items for personal use; personal funds only]

[X] Buy more Supplies - You may search the market for Supplies to benefit your future regiment. Even though you have 3 full wagons of them, you can always use more. Do keep in mind though, more supplies means more wagons are needed and thus, more men are required for the escort. [STE based; 5 ZŁ = 1 Supply; 100 Supplies or less need a wagon and a horse +50 ZŁ; every wagon needs at least one man to drive it; Budget funds only]

[X] Recruit Officers - While technically you can't barge into a tavern or town square announcing a recruitment drive with drums playing, it doesn't mean you can't look for qualified help among the locals. You are certain that there are officers or good candidates for them somewhere around here and given the fact, that this is the capital with a whole host of foreign soldiers present, it would be a shame not to take a look. However, with the King and his court gone and with him much of the foreigners as well, your chances have somewhat decreased. [CHA based; search for officers of random descent]

[X] Recruit Irish Officers - While technically you can't barge into a tavern or town square announcing a recruitment drive with drums playing, it doesn't mean you can't look for qualified help among the locals. You can try and focus your attention towards your own countrymen, hoping that there are some Irishmen with the knack for leadership present. Of course, this will be much harder to achieve. Especially now, when the King and his court have left the city, taking with them a good amount of the foreigners present. [CHA based; search for officers of Irish descent]

[X] Improve your Skills - You can use this time for some personal improvement. By reading, studying and practising what you know, you can achieve better understanding in your chosen field of expertise. [pick one Skill from the Sheet: it gets improved by 1, more if Crit]

[X] Gamble - One thing you did learn while locked away in garrisons during the long winter months was to play cards and roll the dice. While you're far from proficient in the art of gambling, you could spend your free time risking your hard earned coin in a game of chance, hoping to win some more money. Or losing it all, who knows? [INT based; risk money to win more money; personal funds only]

[X] Hire more local nobles
– While you have enough men to escort you to Pomerania, you could always use more. Warsaw and the surrounding countryside are full of poor, landless nobles trying to make a living. You can hire some of them out to escort you to your destination. Most with any wits about them are armed with sabres, firearms, have personal mounts and know how to fight. Unless you're really unlucky and only find some of those unfortunates wearing wooden helmets for protection with rusty old sabres passed down from their grandfathers. [CHA based; 20 ZŁ per person hired; Pay Double enabled by default; limit: 20 men enabled by default; personal funds only]

[X] Get to know the Olechowskis – While Michał and his dumb like a moose, yet strong as an ox brother Adam joined your little expedition for the promise of pay, they do seem to be a cut above the poor hamlet nobles you hired out. Perhaps they have served somewhere and seen things, since they most certainly have the scars to prove it. If so, you could spend some more time getting to know them. Who knows, maybe they can prove useful beyond your original goal? [CHA based; reveals certain stats from their Sheets and information about them; improves relationship]

There is an optional choice you have to take into account: [pick one or none at all]

[X] Hard cap on Supplies – Set a hard cap on the number of Supplies you intend to buy. This doesn't mean you will reach the target given, only that if you have a large amount of potential cargo, it won't cost you a fortune. Without a hard cap, you will try and buy as many Supplies as possible, regardless of costs. [set hard cap on number of Supplies, pick a number]

Voting in plan format.

Apologies if this has been answered already, but how will supply consumption work in this game? Will individual soldier only a 'point' of supply each half-month, or do they only consume a fraction of a 'point' of supplies (say each soldier consumes 0.2 supplies per half-month, so 5 soldiers would consume 1 supply per turn)?

Hope I worded that right.

I wanted to get to that when we settle in, but sure, I'll gladly answer.

We won't be using decimals. Only regular numbers. I like to keep things as simple as possible.

So basically yes, a soldier will consume a fixed amount of Supplies each half a month. Plus, you'll have to pay him as well. And that's after you dress him, arm him and get him a horse. :D

So our 300 supplies is enough for 300 men for one month?
We're gonna need a lot of wagons.
More, much more. :V

The armies of the time had huge baggage trains with their provisions. That of course didn't stop men from looting, but mostly for plunder, unless supplies were in demand as well. It is why cavalrymen, being fast on their feet, were so effective due to mobility. The Lisowczycy take the cake though, because they moved without wagons, carrying their equipment on spare horses and living off the land by plundering the surrounding countryside dry, killing anyone they met, so that nobody will be able to report them to the enemy. Or to anyone else for that matter. :ninja:
