Going with a cultivation that uses all affinities is probably better for the character.

You'll discover the possible affinities later on in the quest, so I won't talk about them now. But giving the overarching idea behind affinities for the different subtypes shouldn't impact too much.
Heavenly affinities are very typical xianxia stuff. Yin-yang, five elements, etc.
Earthly affinities concern more natural phenomena such as plagues, rain, sandstorms, etc. or things concerning organisms.
Mortal affinities are tied to concepts living beings have created. Justice, weapons, art, dreams, etc. This affinity is never set in stone, and fluctuates constantly in youth and doesn't settle until a living being dedicates themselves to a craft, profession, etc.
