Lead a tiny cluster of humanity through the long dark of the 30th millenium
Character Creation 1
Location
Earth
The oldest legends say that once, humanity lived on the surface. These days, most people aren't even sure what the surface *is*. All you know, all you have EVER known, is the city of Home. Not the most imaginative of names, but its an accurate description, you suppose. The scholars say it had other names once - they talk of "Substation Twelve". Home to slightly more than ten thousand souls, Home is the last known human settlement, and has been for hundreds of years. Records indicate others once existed, and may still exist somewhere out in the tunnels, but there has been no contact for centuries.

And now you lead it. With the passing of the old ruler, you are the clear choice to become the new -

[] President. Democratically elected, you are the chosen representative of the people. You have their support - for now - but are also ultimately answerable to their wrath, and though your appointment is for life, that life can be cut short if you lose too much support. Still, the talents that got you this position in the first place could be useful in wrangling the various branches of government to your will.
+ Diplomacy, +Jack of all trades

[] Commander. You rose through the ranks of the troops who keep the monsters at bay, and keep order within Home. As the leader of such men and women, it is only natural that you be the one to control this land. You know the threats Home faces, both externally and to a degree internally, though you are less comfortable when dealing with things you can't shoot.
+ Military, +Personal combat ability, - Diplomacy

[] Provost. The council of scholars have consulted and agreed you are the best choice to lead. For hundreds of years it has been the wisdom of learned men that has kept Home alive, how else could Substation Twelve, the last bastion, have survived? You are relatively knowledgable on the workings of the ancient technology that keeps Home running, and if you can ever spare the manpower from maintainance work, you'd probably be great at researching things, but some of the less academically inclined might not understand the full nature of what it is you do.
+Research, +Personal knowledge, -Academic Squabbling, -Distrust of the people

[] Monarch. Of course Home is ruled by an absolute monarch, what possible other choice could there be? Well, perhaps not really so absolute, but there are few indeed who can challenge your word, and being the descendant of many other kings you bring vaults of ancient wealth and technology to the table. You just have to make sure to keep the nobles in line, and to have an heir soon - succession crises can get ugly.
+Wealth, -Succession issues (Siblings may be a thing)

(AN: This will retroactively decide how the leadership of Home is, and always has been (at least in recent history), decided. You can choose an exact title later if you want something different to the default, these are just general descriptions of your paths to power)

On a more personal note, you are a []Man []Woman called [].

Welcome to The Long Night. I've never set up a quest like this before, but I've run RP games before on the tabletop, and I've read a decent number of quests, so i figured it was about time to try my own hand at it. In this, you will be taking control of Home, the last known bastion of humanity, as it tries to continue surviving (perhaps one day to thrive?) in a hostile world.. Exactly how much you know about the immediate setting will be determined partially by which role you choose, but I can give a brief overview of what all the options would know (Keep in mind the average citizen would know even less than this): Long ago, Humanity lived on the surface. There was some sort of cataclysm, and humanity retreated far underground. Home was one of many settlements built within massive tunnel systems, but over the years contact has been slowly lost with all others - the exact cause is unknown to you. The technology of ancient times was extremely advanced, but it has been thousands of years and most of the wonders of old have stopped working, and no one left knows how to repair most of them. For example, whilst your personal guard might be equipped with laser rifles, the average tunnel guard is lucky if they have a basic ballistic rifle akin to something made in the last 50 years irl.

Home is a heavily fortified settlement situated within a colossal, maze-like network of tunnels that stretch ever outwards in all directions, including vertically. You have no idea how far they go, or what exactly is out there. The vast majority of the populace of Home have never entered the tunnels, living their whole lives within the crowded confines of Home. The main exception are the tunnel guards, who only venture very short distances out into the wild tunnels beyond. Perhaps you might wish to change that?

Home is semi constantly attacked by monsters, the exact nature of which you do not currently know.

At the heart of Home is The Reactor. The entire settlement is built in and around it, crowding into every vaguely open space. Unlike most tech in the tunnels, your engineers do actually know, for the most part, how to keep it running, even if they don't really understand how it works all that well. Good thing, too, since they tell you that without it Home would go dark and everyone would die.

In terms of mechanics, each turn you will have a certain number of actions for each of several catagories. Vote will be by plan. Where chance is involved, we will be using D100s, with situational modifiers adding or subtracting from this roll. Some things, like combat, will involve opposed D100 rolls. All roles can perform all kinds of actions - being a military dictator doesnt stop you ordering research to be performed, and being a scholar doesnt stop you ordering military actions - but obviously some types of people are going to be better at performing and leading certain types of actions.

This setting is, technically, W40k. Or rather, W30k, during the long dark age before the coming of the Emperor. That being said, don't expect to be interacting with the greater setting any time soon - for a whole host of reasons, it would require this quest to last a long, LOOONG time in order for, say, contact with the nascent Imperium. For now, you are the leader of a tiny polity of a world that is utterly insignificant by galactic standards. Time will tell if that can or will change, but I'd be amazed if you even manage spaceflight any time soon. On a side note, I reserve the right to make any and all alterations to the setting, timeline etc as desired.

I know this is a relatively short post, but how things go initially (in terms of both options immediately available to you and knowledge of the world) will be fairly heavily dependant on what type of leader you choose to be. Hopefully there will be some response to this, and once we've settled on the nature of Home I can write something with a bit more meat on it.

Im interested on playing scientist forced to make a government

Ok, feel free to post now.

If anyone has questions on the local setting, just ask - if its something you would know in character, I will answer. If you dont know, I will say so.

Going to call the vote here, at least as soon as I can work out how the vote tally program works. I think its fairly clear Provost is the winner though.

On a different note, I have been made aware there is already a quest called The Long Night. A Warhammer 40k one, no less. As such, I will be changing the thread name shortly.

Any connection to Asimov's "The Deep"?
Afraid not. Never read that one.

So I think its fairly clear Provost wins, and though its a good bit closer on the name, Angus Macgyver is our main character's new name.
