Sapere aude (Imperial Russian Mythos Organization Quest)

[X] Natural Samples Collection – Alchemical Study
[X] Pages of the Necronomicon – First Principles of Astrology
[X] Engraved Copper Plates – First Principles of Mythos Hermetics

[X] Engraved Copper Plates – First Principles of Mythos Hermetics
[X] Tattooed Human Skins – ???
[X] Golden Ornaments – Increased Wealth

I guess I'll vote for these. I'm really interested in direct magic, since while it is more dangerous to research, I guess our members, given who they've chosen to be, are ready to make the sacrifice. Also getting magic from Cthulhu probably isn't a great deal either, with the added danger of not actually knowing what you're doing, and the guiding intelligence for the effects not being aware of your existence or importance is probably not great either. Further than that, the ???-option is obviously the one the GM wants to do and thinks is the coolest (and I like it when the DM likes a quest, duh).
Money is for money, so that we don't have to rush our research.

Voting will remain open for at least five more hours.

Looks like we've got three that are pulling ahead of the pack right now.

Here's the current tally:

So, can anyone think of a good cover other than university? If we had medical stuff we could do hospital, but I can't really think of anything else I'd think of for good covers (that aren't university)

University isn't bad, just wondering if we have any other good options :)

As it stands, the choices will be something like…

University (either standalone or with the St. Peter's)
Banking Institution
Hospital
Museum
Factory
Forego the Cover and Double-Down on Secrecy

Granted, some of these will be more successful with the addition of certain artifacts you're voting on now, but whatever cover your organization uses doesn't need to be wildly successful to shield your gatherings and research.

I am open to suggestions, though.

If we're not going with a university, I prefer the Museum angle. We can hide our occult activities under a "Restricted" section of an Archival Research office.

I agree. The Museum also needs fewer staff than a university, I'd think, that should be easier on the expenses. I raher think our other activities will require most of our financial resources.

My problem with museum would be a lack of money we'd get from it, that's why university is tempting, we'd get money from students or research grants, or whatever else unis get paid for at this point

Also, what would we put in the normal part of the museum? Whatever we'd want to display we'd have to find first, or buy for lots of money, which doesn't really accomplish what we want here

Why don't we combine the two? Have a museum on the campus, as well as a university! This could also help us in our recruitment efforts, but it might increase some scrutiny... Is it possible to do this, @Slayer Anderson ? To combine two or more buildings? This would require extra build-time, cost, upkeep, or personnel, but is it possible?

Miskatonic University did have its own small museum.

You can, if you like, develop secondary attributes to your cover organization if you like. It will take investment, both in terms of time and money, but it's possible.

Choose one to start with and we'll go from there.

Just got home from work, so I'm wiped. Voting is slightly extended for another hour or two until I can get a bit of rest.

While I'm writing the next update (look for it to be posted probably Wednesday), I'm opening an informal vote on a name for your group.

I'm looking for some kind of consensus on what you'd like your organization to be called and/or any predominant symbol you want to use as an identifier.

Feel free to take your time and discuss, even if the ultimate answer is that you want to be the 'University Book Club' or something like that.

Such an answer is totally viable, it will just make negotiating with other supernatural groups a bit... tricky, lets say. Of course, you also don't want something that will attract the Okhrana because it sounds secret or sinister. Such a name might cause you trouble in the future. (Seriously, might. Depending on actions and luck, you could get away with it if you maintain a low profile.)

At any rate, there's your homework for the interim. I'll add in my two cents to any specific proposal that catches my eye.

If we run into two or more competing blocks of players who want different things, I'll open a formal runoff on the matter.

How about Sitra Ahra? It also translates to "The Other Side" so we can use the translation as the face name while using the Sitra Ahra as it's secret society name.

Those two sounds like mystery cults already, i think it should be like "The Merciful Brothers of St. Michael" to avoid suspicion

Edit: other non-suspicious sounding names hiding behind the veil of benovelence:

The Society of Russian Gentlemen
The Brethren of the Great Bear
The Sons of Mother Russia
The Emperor's Most Loyal Social Club
The Company of Learned Christians
The Brotherhood of St. George
The Exalted Society of Researchers and Artisans

Symbols:
A Bear and a cross
A circle of ravens in flight
An open book with a crown
A bear reading A book
A bear carrying the torch of knowledge

... I have more of these
