Oh hey, here's the Tsun-Tsun-Tain-Tan!

Okay, silliness aside, I'm thinking that Shetran Stream is the most likely option. While the possibility of betrayal is just that, a possibility, and the worst case scenario is that we're needlessly antagonizing a potential, if very very reluctant political ally. On the other hand, we have assistance, and can probably survive whatever it is that might be waiting for us there, so... Check the most dangerous potential option first, then go down the list?

How operation is her dreadnought and how does it compare to say the ships in the fleet facing her now. She still needs a lot of repair I think also go for the mined out system your ship is still hungry

And as of the last official consensus you read, there are a grand total of two hundred, thirteen thousand, seven hundred, and forty eight worlds with this descriptor. And that's just self-sufficient worlds. It does not include near-sufficient worlds that are still working to field their fleets, or dependent colonies that have their own ships on loan from other Imperial factions, or House Fleets such as your Father's, or even the Imperial Navy itself which is constantly being expanded in order to stay strong enough to enforce Imperial Rule across all of it's myriad worlds.
The bolded word should probably be "census".

And we see the Frenemy #1?

(A popular theory is it's also how the Skeld achieve their temporal manipulations, but no one has the guts to ask on the off chance of becoming a 'test subject'.)
Oh good, time travel (or at least time distortions, which are less absolutely insane but still nasty). That's always going to suck to deal with, if we wind up having to. I can't see why we would, but then we also really don't have the full story about whatever's going on with them.

"This is Captain Katetox Zeyuth to… I know you." The blue-skinned woman frowns 'up' at you in surprise. "What are you doing here, Anatasia Morev?"

You smile back at her, "Kate! Long time no see! How's the cat?" You really shouldn't have brought up the cat, but seeing your old 'friend' after three years the urge is so overwhelming that the words are out of your mouth before you can finish registering that the temporary exchange student—read: political prisoner—from your academy days is suddenly in front of you again and is in charge of her own flotilla of ships.
Oh fun! old acquaintances! Who seem a bit unhappy about that fact, which might be enough of an issue to outweigh the coordination advantage of being familiar with her. It's hard to tell how much of the visible animosity is how she sees Ana, and how much is just being like that normally yet, so I figure that's something to watch out for.

"The neutron stars in the area mess with long range sensors like nothing else in the region. It's a centralized location that has easy access to every known interception point and lost convoy from both sides, and the best place to set up if you're intending to trick the Federation and Empire into a war by setting up the other if one finds you via scapegoat tactics since it's the worst contested part of the region."
On the one hand, that does sound extremely ideal of a place to do piracy from... which also makes me think it's not there, because while it is extremely valuable it's also an obvious choice. If it's someone being sneaky, then I think they'd know better than to hide in the most "someone should hide here" spot around.

"That is… an uncomfortable possibility that I don't want to pursue unless absolutely necessary," you carefully share. "But if it is true, then we have a far larger and far deeper problem on our hands."
If that is the case, that's the sort of trouble that sits solidly in the "main plot for a good long while" territory. I'd like for it not to be, because political skulking around sounds like a pain in the ass, but if this happens then we'll be dealing with it for a while.

it's where someone who is trying to be sneaky in the well-surveyed backyard of two major powers would put themselves I figure - Shetran is too obviously ideal for anyone with the interstellar surveys to know what it's like and the border is, I think, what we check once we're sure nobody's doing false flags.

you do realize the second line of that is my explanation for my vote and not part of the vote itself? I probably should've spaced it out better, but there is an intended vote-attached paragraph and my words aren't it.

[X] Shetran Stream - You've tried avoiding the Stream for a while now, but it looks like your luck's run dry. The mix between radiation storms and gravitational eddies of the Stream make navigating the area painful for Imperial and Federation ships, but it also makes it a wonderful place to hide. It'll take a while to scour it completely, but doing so will likely tell you exactly who it is you're looking for, with the bonus that if it's pirates you'll be able to run their hiding hole into the ground right out the gate… though the area is also controlled by Lord Mustafa, who you already know is out to see you dead.

Voting this just to be different :V

Space is a big place. Between least likely place and a giant system with a lot of objects, going to a place with lots of interesting things happening is bound to make the search faster.

And hey, if we meet the Lord Mustafa fleet it's bound to be interesting.

The Shetran Stream is the chockepoint of all trade in the Southern Empire. With our sensors (which are only thing which works as expected on our ship), we should have no problems finding pirates or whatever third party we need to find.

Meeting our political opponents in space is also very much in our favor currently. In worse case scenario, we will just burn some Hull Integrity via Inertia Drive to escape. Yes, it's a valuable resource, but better that then getting into a battle with a whole fleet.

I don't actually expect that to be a problem, since with our sensors and initial speed, we should be capable of outmanuvering any modern ship (or at least outside their sensor range).

After a quick reread I definitely think the "politics idiots" answer makes a lot of sense

"None of the… minor powers that could potentially gain from such a war wouldn't have the strength to survive it.
Double negative where there wasn't supposed to be one.

My hunch is that we have a significant advantage, there, over the enemy. Option says "likely" to discover the culprits (rather than waste time if we're wrong), and if Lord Mustafa has a trap for us, I'd prefer to spring the trap rather than deal with political games.

Sensory distortions also make this the most likely place to grab a meal without our escorts noticing (well, the mined-out system probably has a smaller appetizer to sample little-by-little).

If it is Lord Mustafa behind this, there's a good chance we'll find something here, and I'd like to rule that out first.

Also, Childhood's End is best waifu, as usual.

I say we go here first in part because even if the pirates aren't here there is still some useful resources we could grab to repair CE a bit, even if we need to split it 50/50 with Kate, she can rework straight rocks right?

It's been stated that the system is mined out. It's full of valueless and empty rocks. Trace elements aren't going to be nearly enough to supply even a bit of Resources unless we find a base there (with imported out of system materials). You basically have to ask yourself which place is better to find enemies at for Resources, and if it's a level appropriate encounter for us.
