The very first thing you do as you get onto the ship is go over the data of the regiment more thoroughly. One of the more useful pieces of data is the regimental layout of troops.
Code:
112Th Iron Drakes (From Kvalgron)
(3) Battalion Light Infantry
--(3) Companies Spear men
--(1) Company Archers
--(1) Command Company
(1) Battalion Siege Works
--(2) Companies field artillery
--(2) Companies Engineers
--(1) Company Miners
(1) Battalion Shock Troops
-Battalion Shock Troops
--(2) Companies House Guard Heavy Infantry
--(1) Company Light Cavalry
--(1) Company Heavy Cavalry
--(1) Command Company
(1) Squad Storm Troopers
(1) Commissar
--(6) Commissar Candidates
The data breaks down further, but what you see is already telling, mostly spears and archery. The shock troop battalion seems to be where the money and influence goes. Some of the data explains the recruitment for that battalion is highly controlled. Where as the other ones are considered a legal right to enlist in if you meet the requirements.
The planet truly is a feudal world, the most advanced artillery they have is a trebuchet. You feel resigned reading that, this is going to be about finding a way to work with these primitive nearly monkey level savages and turn them into something useful.
Luckily they are fighting equally primitive orks, though your data file on orks say they can tech upwards rapidly when united by a single boss. That isn't something you can act upon easily, but it is good to know. What it does mean though is that giving the regiment a tech advantage could be relatively simple, you took blueprints for steel and titanium recyclers, and mono laser sharpeners. Just better armor and better blades alone could be a decisive edge. Archers are an interesting problem, you could make mono-edged arrows but that seem's a waste.
You may have to put some time into researching and designing a good solid metal arrow so you can quickly print and sharpen them. Ideally you also need to take up a project to build the laser sharpeners into the recylers so it can produce mono-edged weapons for you.
All of these thoughts and planning is interrupted when there is a small knock upon your door. You open it and the captain is waiting and gives a formal bow.
"Honored Enginseer, I have come to make a humble request of you. My ship is in need of some retrofits and work, battle damage and ad-hoc repairs never fully completed instead just keeping us moving to preform our duties, and since you will be here for some time, it was my hope that you would be willing to preform some of the sacred duties, a proper repair to a few systems would be great for the ship. I understand your busy, but if you are to undertake the work I have a servitor that could be of some assistance it was meant for battle damage repair and I'd be happy to leave it in your care in exchange for the repairs"
You think upon this a moment and promise to get back to him with an answer soon, it isn't your problem that he doesn't understand binary chatter as you shut the door in his face.
Though the offer is tempting, you check into the workshop that was locked by the previous tech priest on board, and apply a different lock. It's a tradition to leave some tools and parts for the next tech priest upon the ship. You have enough for his requested repairs, and the ship is in need of them it is a tired machine spirit that could use the care.
On the other hand these parts could be the start of your production line. You will have to make a choice.
As you grow closer to the planet you have to make one more choice. The ship you are on is supposed to take refugees to a nearby planet. Several of those refugees could be useful. Doctors and engineers could be worth their weight in gold with what you need to do to this regiment. However they are not volunteering.
The regimental commissar is known to be fond of the mechanicus and worked well with them in the past. You could make a request of him to go and enlist a few of those people. He has such an authority and even a substandard work crew would be miles ahead of these you could pull from the regiment. The question is, is it worth striking a reputation of fear before even stepping on planet, to enslave people to your service from day 1?
Reputation is a powerful tool, the red robes are not given until that is thoroughly understood. Though with reputation on the mind your going to have to plan how you want to treat the officers and leadership of the regiment.
The ship has almost arrived and you can contact the commissar.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Plan Voting:
--------------------
What work do you get done on your flight.
[] Do the work on the ship for the servitor and for the machine spirit that will be pleased.
[] Do not do the work on the ship so you can land with 2 steel recylers ready
---------------
Do you take the chance to contact the commissar and grab a few able bodies?
[] Request the Commissar enlist a few doctors and engineers for you as staff.
[] Do not make the request of the Commissar so as not to be seen as a slaver.
------------------
How should you act with the leadership of the regiment you are about to meet.
[] Remain Mysterious while you learn about them
[] Be commanding the underdeveloped soldiers need to understand that you do not answer to them, if anything the opposite.
[] Be polite, they may be willing to help sincerely if you play their games.
