[X] Push Naiya to tell Mari about what really happened at the Battle of Iapetus

This feels like a shiny red button... I wanna push it.

Pfft, what are a few war-crimes between friends.

The more I find out about her academy years, the more I'm surprised it took so much for her to desert. Well, nevermind that
You need to have faith that you can actually get away with deserting. Otherwise, you just make things worse for yourself and maybe end up like her father.

Plus, things likely got a fair bit better once Green took her in.

[X] Be candid about your tragic backstory

Even if this leads to that aforementioned love-hate rivalry, death, and Mari's subsequent eye-opening moment, I have a feeling it's the right choice. And besides, it's one of the fastest, yet riskiest, ways for a side character to earn plot armor.

I'm talking about unconfirmed kills if you couldn't tell, the line between KIA and MIA is blurred a lot, especially in Mecha type media.

*sighs* this is the high-risk high-reward option. It pushes us way up into the viewer's awareness, but is a massive deadmeat move. I mean, a tragic backstory? That is better emotional capital than an imminent retirement and picture of family, possibly even combined! If we survive this, we will be well on our way to prominent recurring character status, maybe even a member of the protagonist's retinue!

I feel that, pragmatically, the horrifying war story from a veteran of her own side is more likely to catch her out, and better able to stick with her and leave her questioning things, but, well, all options are equally good...

Also, the one year anniversary of starting this quest was less than a week ago. I hope everyone enjoys where things go in the coming year.
👏
At this rate Carbon Steel will have overtaken Battle Action Harem Highschool Side Character Quest in no time!

No tragic backstories for me, please. Everyone seems to have one nowadays. Maybe even Mari.
Not everyone gets to participate in warcrimes though! That'd be novel.

Man, this trio of prisoners is really fun. I love these kinds of character dynamics.

Oh, yeah. Actually joining the Divine Navy, serving under Green during their Jovian pirate hunting days, was a massive step up. She never lied to herself enough to buy completely that it was anything but a conditional reprieve, though. Just, you know, lying to herself enough to pin the blame for everything on her mother, with the encouragement of one of the only authority figures to treat her fairly in years.

I feel like certain people in the Imperium of Man Holy Solar Empire are already aware of her capture/defection but just blabbing like that to enemy prisoners still seems really incredibly shitty, even for Kana.

I dunno, to me this doesn't really feel like a context where Kana would open up. Like, she doesn't even talk about this with people she's close to, I don't think she'd lower her guard for three enemies.
