@mouli there are two yes/no votes for this update that the tally may have trouble distinguishing between if task tags aren't used.
Will edit that in, then. Thanks!
As for notoriety: Not bad or good, simply whether or not the British government and the local governors regard you as a major player in the area. A major native player will of course attract attention and notoriety, but also can get favorable deals in exchange for doing the government favors.
E: Task tags added, see threadmark. As for the CAlcutta option, it's entirely legal. Just something that draws attention.

Donkey Hote is right -- this was a good year, enough for us to retire our debts plus invest in growth. The mills are paying off, and I'm excited about the good rolls for Made in India.

For our Investigating options for Singapore smuggling costs us nothing, and gives us more options at the start of next turn. Absolutely worthwhile. (We may choose not to smuggle next turn, and that's totally fine if it's too much risk.)

And yes, we absolutely want to be a major player in Calcutta. It brings some risk in having to deal with the government -- but that notoriety means we have more of a voice in what Indian nationalism becomes.

Poor Neeraj. I hope we can prepare him for what's coming.

Huh. Well, if it's legal...

Networking normally costs 0.5, so it's a random route for 1.5 Profit. If it so much as nets one profit on average it'll pay itself back in a couple turns.

Unsure about smuggling though. I mean, it's apparently what our Singapore assignment specializes in, but a chance each turn of being caught out sounds risky. What's the chance-per-turn of being caught?

But if it's just leaving the option open, might as well investigate.

At present ten percent. Actions can be taken each turn to avoid that, and events like reinforcement of the Singapore police can raise that to twenty. You will have advance warning of those events.

Base Income before expansions: 3+3+1+1+2+1=10-1(Dynasty Upkeep)-1(Interest)=9 Profit.
Also, for my own amusement and curiosity, lemme write out what our profits were per good/route:
-Calcutta Dyes: 3 Profit (out of 3 possible)
-Bombay Cotton Textiles: 3 Profit (out of 4 possible)
-Bombay Cotton: 1 Profit
-Singapore Rubber: 1 Profit (out of 2 possible)
-Staple Grain: 2 Profit (out of 2 possible)
-Staple Iron: 1 Profit (out of 2 possible)

Yeah, this was a very good turn for us. Looks like our dyes and textiles really sold this turn. The Textile mill has already paid 3x our investment.

getting known and more contacts is not on it own a bad thing and might help a bit

[x][SMUGGLING]Yes: You will have an option to take a smuggling route from Singapore in the 1873 section of the turn, at no extra cost.
its only getting an option not locking it in. i like options even if i still think its a bad idea too get to close too any criminals

while i rather not have a lot of eyes on us. getting some eye on us is not the end of the world.
and having a look around at the options is not a totally bad idea on its own.

Hmm...
--Contacts: Level 1 of 5 possible: Most of the family's contacts in Calcutta are lower level merchants and suppliers, who are useful to get information from the hinterland but who also have their own agenda. The Uprising of 1857 has erased most of the family's old network, and the recent laws regarding the dye trade (and the formation of English cartels) has damaged things further – further networking in the patriarch's opinion should focus on the English and on securing a decent market.
---[-]British Establishment: Locked. You are not famed enough.
I think we might just have at least the start of an in towards what our patriarch wants for Calcutta. Doubt it'll be that easy, but it's a start.

i got one thing that been bothering me so far?
i have no sense of scale on how much of a big/small fish we are right now.
how we might stack up to other traders and stuff like that.

You're still smaller than the Tatas and the big Parsis, but next turn update should have some hint of that, with the start of the choice chain in Turn 2 for the germ of the Swadeshi movement.

that sound interesting but i have no idea what that means in context!
The Tatas were a group of Zoroastrian businessmen who would build this post independence, from the conglomerate that they built up from the 1860s onwards. Many of the other Parsis (the term used for the Zoroastrian community) in Bombay are also prominent traders and bankers, often dealing in opium alongside the British, and more can be read about them here.

It is worth noting that intrest on our loans rounded up to a full 1 profit this turn instead of 0.75. So we may want to either pay that down next turn or borrow an extra .5. And that if we are going to borrow more in the future it is best to do it in full intervals.
