The Beginning of the End - A West Roman Empire Quest

The Romano-Briton refugees starting from this period to the 500s-600s emigrated to Armorica and became the modern-day Bretons whilst intermixing with the local populace as well.

Edit: I would also like to go ahead and state that I am simplifying a lot, plus that theory has been challenged in the past with competing theories. I am just giving a summary for what's relevant to this situation.
It's a good summery. I'm assuming that atleast some Romano-Briton's have settled their all ready, becouse it fits the Quest.

i think what you guys are forgetting is that we do not have the stirrup invented right now so having something like knights will be hard.

The stirrup has already been invented in China and historically would have proliferated to Europe by the 600s, so it could spread to Europe quicker should we manage to reestablish trade lines with Asia quicker.* There have also been early forms of the stirrup in Europe - like leather loops - appearing already by now. I am more worried about the fact that knights/cataphracts would be extremely expensive since horses are still more for the patricians outside of the nomadic tribes. That's why I didn't just automatically pick heavy cavalry for the reformation of the army. I don't know what warfare is like now. I know it relies on cavalry as shock troops in the future, but equipping heavy cavalry and breeding horses capable of running and holding that type of armor is really expensive work. I just trusted that Hannz and the others know what they're talking about that heavy cavalry (as opposed to light cavalry or anti-cavalry infantry) are important now, since I am not an expert on the history of military warfare or equipment.

*One note though, is that reestablishing trade lines like that also historically led to Justinian's Plague spreading across most of Europe that was connected to it.

What about mounted infantry. I remember seeing somewhere that it was the basis of the carolingian army. Breeding horses is still a problem, but the equipment is easier.

I think it's more that Infantry have to be really disciplined to hold against cavalry charges, in real life a charge caused them to break. I imagine as the west got poorer it lacked the ability to pay and drill it's own troops thus shifting towards a more cav focused army.

Thus we need proper infantry because right now the western Romans are relying on militia right now and we only have a handful of legions, so we need to build back up our army and traditions of Rome either with the old type of legions or a new type of army.

On the contrary, the Late Western Roman Army was by no means poorer in drill and training than the ancient legions, the rest of the world just caught up. That, and a Cavalry-centric army is by nature, a lot more expensive to maintain than a infantry one since you need to pay for the rider and several horses, which wouldn't make sense for a poor state to transition towards.

Stirrups we can get from the East during times of peace with the Parthians and the Silk Road. Once we have a example, our smiths can get to work repropducing them.

Falling back on the old style Roman Legions will see them bowled over by the coming changes in warfare and the eventual dominance of heavy shock cavalry and cavalry-centric armies. The Romans need to keep up with the times rather than looking at the past with rose-tinted glasses, where the same Legions encountered great difficulty in beating Cavalry-centric armies of the Parthians. True, the Legions did have their victories against Steppe Nomads and the Horse Archer heavy Parthians, but that was with a buttload of Skirmishers that weren't the standard of the Legion, and once armor technology develops enough, Infantry Skirmishers will be a lot less effective at denying a cavalry charge.

Remember that their are Germanic Triebes that can provide cavallery of both kinds. You just have to ... remind them of their place in the world. ;)

Historical infantry was well into the early middle ages the main amount of armys. So you will more often face infantry than cavallery. A focus on hevay infantry means that that will make the bulk of your military. You still could form a small, elite cavallery force fo example.

This makes me really glad we just take the highest...
The highest result is always picked if not otherwise stated by me before a roll. For example: if you now would move with two legions and no navy against the Vandals, that rule would change. But as long as I don't say it, it is always the highest result. 4 means you barely made it but it will have some consequences. So, troops will arrive in Armorica but that won't make anyone happy. It could, for example, lead to a faster growth in a Progress Counter or a new one could create if I'm really mean.

As soon as the weather allowed it, Rome began its campaign in Dalmatia. Under the leadership of Orestes's brother Paulus, the first Legion readied itself to march into the province that housed the former emperor Julius Nepos. The attack didn't come as a surprise, and so the first scouting elements Paulus sent in were soon engaged in smaller skirmishes with troops from Dalmatia. But Paulus's men were better equipped and had higher morale. That was thanks to the many changes that had occurred in Italy in the last years. People have noted from the time that the light troops of Paulus often won the engagements with ease. Their success was the main reason why Paulus began his offensive so early.

He made quick progress, and it became clear that Dalmatia would fall. But even knowing this, Ovida, Julius Nepos's loyal general, prepared the defense of Dalmatia's capital. And as he was doing this, he skillfully slowed Paulus's advance down with a mixture of roadblocks and small engagements. Maybe Ovida hoped that he could weaken Rome's army enough that he could win against them, or he was trying to maneuver them to a battlefield of his choice. Historians have discussed both options, which option had the right of it will never be found out as Nepos made his move.

Fearful of the seemingly unstoppable approach of Paulus, Nepos sent a messenger to Theodoric Strabo, King of the Ostrogoths, with a promise of gold and land in Italy if they would deliver the Imperial crown to him. The responses of the opportunistic king were swift and loud as he led a great army into Dalmatia. It appeared as if Nepos had made this move without asking his commander Ovida or others of his council. Because shortly after the arrival of the troops of the Ostrogoths, the garrison in Dalmatia revolted against him. They crowned Ovida as Emperor of Rome. Ovida accepted the title, but only to use it as a bargaining chip when he met with Paulus. He offered his new crown and title in exchange for Rome's help and protection against the barbarian invaders.

Without time to send a rider to Orestes, Paulus had to make his decision:

[ ] He accepted the terms and took the Dalmatia garrison with Ovida as their leader under his command.
[ ] He refused and decided to wait for the next moves.

Progress Counter: Julius Nepos's moves have been fulfilled.

At the same time, the last parts of the new naval yards were finished, and production began immediately. Swimming on the wave of massive support and the large recruitment efforts, work commenced at a rapid pace. Wealthy merchants who took part in wood trading suddenly found plentiful supplies of well-dried wood and fabric traders found sails. Suddenly, all of Italy was in a fever to rebuild its navy. For many, this was the first genuine step to retake their position as masters of the West. And so, when Romulus Augustus visited the yards, he was greeted by the first squadron of the Navy, ready to begin its duty for the Emperor. According to his biography, the Emperor kneeled in tears before the crowd, so moved was he. And, following the typical theatrics of the time as is often found in writings of the same time, the crowd also fell to their knees, crying with their Emperor.

New Trait: Navy Squadron +1d6 for each Squadron send on a Campaign on the sea (Current Number of Squadrons: 1)

The Britons in Armorica didn't welcome the unit that had been sent their way via Syragius, but they also didn't force them to leave. Their leaders gathered to speak with the commander of the garrison force and reluctantly swore allegiance to Rome. But it was clear that for the moment, it was only lip service to them. For Orestes, it was still a victory as he could name Amorica among the provinces that had been returned to the Empire. What many celebrated in Rome wasn't seen that positive by the Alans. Syragius sent a report that they were preparing an offensive against Armorica. He also stated that as the Magister militum, he stood ready to defend the province in his area of duty and asked if he could do so with the blessing of the Emperor.

[ ] He received the blessing to do all he could to defend Armorica from the barbarians (???)
[ ] He received the blessing but was also informed that any significant decision would need the approval of Rome (???)
[ ] He didn't receive the blessing of Rome, the Garrison would be enough. (???)

Progress Counter: Alans attack Gaul 3 / 5 has been changed to Alans attack Armorica 1 / 3

Besides all the wars or potential new wars emerging around the Empire, it is often overlooked that under the leadership of Orestes, the Civil Administration in the West was reworked massively. The approach Orestes had to choose was to militarize the structure of the Administration so newer and more precise areas of responsibility were established. New provinces and their borders were marked out in such a way that not often questions about it arose. Silently and without anyone noticing it, the Civil Administration in the West was reborn with terrifying efficiency. This led to even more stability in the western part of the Empire and allowed Orestes to control his provinces even more.

To secure the Empire in the south, an ambassador was sent to the accursed Vandals to buy Rome time. As a historian of a later age wrote: "Smiling and nice words don't hurt anyone, and they cost nothing – but can buy the world." And it worked in Rome's favor as the Vandals quickly agreed to stop raiding the southern part of the Empire and even offered a normalization of the relationship as they had already done with Zeno. They were also massively interested in trade, as the progress of the Western Empire in that regard had reached them. The question Orestes asked himself was, why had these warlike people suddenly changed so much?

Berbers were the answer, the Barbarians of the desert were harassing the Vandals strongly and fought them at the borders. It seemed like the Germanic Barbarians had trouble controlling their borders and lacked the experience in suppressing others. Much to the amusement and relief of Orestes, that threat came from the desert. Much like Rome, they also needed a quiet Mare Nostrum. The question was if Rome would give them that. For now, at least an unsecured peace had settled between Rome and the Vandal Kingdom.

Progress Counter: Vandals take south Italy: 4 / 5 has changed to Vandals declare war 1 / 10

Called it! This is why you always offer people a way out, because desperate men make stupid choices when they have no other option.

Can't believe Western Rome is making a comeback. Just gotta build up that military and economy to fill the void when the other nations fall into instability or invasion.

So quick clarification here, is he offering Paulus the crown and recognition as emperor in a kind of civil war move, or is he offering to recognize Romulus as emperor?
Maybe I should have written it more clear. Ovida offers his title and crown to Rome, he doesn't care who takes it. The idea was that he offers it to Romulus Augusts because he just wants to protect the home of his soldiers.
I think the blessings vote is a vote on centralisation perhaps?
No, it is Syriacus asking if he is allowed to do whatever it takes to defend Armorica and his part of Gaul from attack. It is named blessing because Romulus August or Orestes could do little should he decide to do whatever he wants. Rome ist still too weak to stop him and Syriacus is at the moment mostly independent. But because he sees himself as a servant of Rome, he wouldn't act in a way that could be seen as treason - even if it would be in his rights. After all he is the Magister miltum of Gaul.

While I am a bit hesitant to let a Magister Militum act without a leash at all given Rome's history in that matter, I believe that his actions and the direness of the situation (and our lack of steady communication yet) makes it so that the best course of action would be to simply let him do what he wants without need for oversight for the moment.

[X] Plan Look, a Distraction!

Sieges are bloody and take way too long to finish. This meanwhile, is a elegant way to get things over with and acquire a new, loyal vassal. With the city in our hands, we can finish the Ostrogoths off, and maybe even bloody Ovida in the fighting if he decides to backstab us in the last second. To that end, we shouldn't split our forces. Instead, let's meet the Ostrogoths head on as a united, Roman front to foster cooperation between our troops and commanders, give them second thoughts if backstabbing us is really worth it. Besides, we presumably have the numbers on our side, so we shouldn't let ourselves get taken apart piecemeal.

As for our Magister Militum, it's dangerous but we have little choice in the matter anyways. We want to keep the appearance of strength and a slowed response will cause Gaul to lose faith in the resurgent Empire.

That said, the Schism is the most dangerous threat to us right now, so we ought to devote most of our energy to that first, and what better way to distract the people from it than lowered taxes! Bread and Circuses for everybody! Drown all your spiritual sorrows with your increased spending power and all these foreign and exotic goods flooding the market! Who has time to sincerely listen to the priests and firebrands when there's new wine to be drunk?

Sadly, we're unable to form new diplomatic connections this turn due to the urgency of the Schism, but we'll hopefully have diffused this and bought us time by then to focus outwards next turn.

[X] Plan Look, a Distraction!

This seems to be the most logical plan to me. I believe next turn we should send an envoy Zeno's way towards opening up a conversation towards bringing the churches more into unity before they actually schism. We will also likely need to boost our stability a bit more for whatever concession bringing them closer to unity would require.

[X] Plan Look, a Distraction!

A logical plan. We don't have reliable and consistent roads and communication with Gaul and right now it's freaking divided with squatters like the Franks and Alans and Goths and other barbarians.

Rome must survive.
