Huuuuh. That's a few more roles than I remember in chess. A good addition to the lore, though - no reason for chess in Remnant to have the same ruleset as our chess, and it means that each year at Beacon can have more teams which... makes a lot more sense than canon.
Well, not like Earth chess is all that standardized either.
International chess is the King and Queen, a pair each of Rook, Bishop, Knight and a lot of Pawns, which is basically a direct mirror of its Indian predecessors(though the bishop was an elephant, heh, fat bishop).
Chinese chess is General, Guards, Minister/Elephant(explicit this time, red team is minister, black team is elephant), Cavalry, Chariot, Cannon and Pawn.
Would make sense that the pieces reflect the main military units of the time.
Why isn't Jaune having doubts about the reliability of transistor since it broke both time Jaune was in a "true" life or death situations. Despite being being a 1 in a 1000 shot or Ozpins soul is crazy, from Jaune point of view transistor has shown a trend of failing at multipal critical moments. This second time was so bad as to be traumatizing. I don't see Jaune just glossing over that without breaking character.
"... My God, it fixed itself," you mutter under your breath.
"In less than an hour, without Arc's input, I believe.. I'm impressed- the boy has created something truly amazing."
>HE DID. I AM. AND I HAVE QUESTIONS, OZPIN.
>YOU WILL ANSWER THEM.
Your Scroll screen goes black, camera flickering out and replaced with the above message, in a teal-green tint that you immediately recognise. Before you can react beyond just registering its existence, the screen blanks itself again, the cameras flickering back into view.
"He's already getting back up. Whatever that sword does to regulate his Semblance, it's devilishly efficient at it."
You glance down at your Scroll, and through the thick web of green… goop, the Tessaro boy created between the trees for some reason, Arc is getting back up.
The boy who was delirious with pain and suffering a Semblance stress-based nosebleed not a minute ago is on his feet and looking better than he has at any point since he landed.
That's… you shake your head for a lack of words.
You look over to Ozpin. Ozpin continues staring off over the cliff.
"... Well. At least we've no need to break our non-interference policy."
This whole scene was awesome. The dialog, the dynamic between the characters, the setting up for an awesome and interesting interaction in the future, and the kind of humor Ozpin would definitely employ.
Yeah, I can definitely see Yang's head spinning from all of this. I can't wait for Ruby to get more interaction with and understanding of the Transistor. For a weapon nut like her, something as jaw-droppingly complex, intricate, and capable as Transistor--not to mention its sapience, making it a living, feeling weapon that she can talk to--would be a holy grail for her, in a way.
But yeah--Yang. Getting not just hard evidence that Jaune's weapon is literally sapient, but that it's so complex that it's basically more akin to a warship fused with a supercomputer would definitely raise all sorts of questions.
Oh my god, Jaune. And you just went through the whole "Zero Hour" spiel. I guess "learning how to aim" is definitely one of those other zero day vulnerabilities you'll have to address soon.
By that point, the Beowolves are close enough to be a problem for everyone else, too, yourself included- you tear your attention away from the fight between Grimm and machine and choose to implement the Transistor as God's own meat skewer, sending it at the first Beowolf you have a clear shot at.
...wow. Jaune is so bad at aiming that pointing a sword in a straight line to a target (a larger-than-human-sized target, no less) is a task that he is significantly more likely to fail at than succeed at.
All of this Grimm-based carnage leaves your left hand itching, begging to bring out Zero Hour and wade in there yourself, but you hold those urges back, instead pulling the Transistor up, away from its blind flailing that's more likely to hit the girls than any monsters at this point, and send it towards the Alpha Beowolf to give that Creep a little bit of help.
...and somehow, aiming at the even bigger alpha beowolf is so hard for him that he had a mere 20% chance of succeeding. That's memetic in a Huntsman school.
… It's, around this point that you, remember that the Transistor isn't exactly in any kind of shape to be finding its way back to you, and that throwing it at the Alpha was kind of dumb, actually.
Damn you, force of habit.
"... Ssssooo…" Yang starts. "Is, your sword going to, come back, or-"
"I should probably go and get it," you try not to sound as embarrassed as you feel, and fail, miserably.
Yang, angel that she is, keeps her reaction to a strangled snort.
It's moments like these that make Jaune so likeable as a character even when he's so capable and skilled. Like, in another story, with a different writer, Jaune having these capabilities might come across as a Marty Stu, but seeing him constantly embarrass himself in little ways and remind the readers of all the things he's lacking in or in completely over his head (in humorous ways) change that dynamic completely.
Now, that's not to say it's not doing something kinda useful- the Alpha is currently hanging on for dear life as it gnaws away at the Transistor's handle, and the Transistor tries to flail it off, slamming it against trees, the ground, any solid surface seemed to work for it.
"{DON'T JUST STAND THERE! HELP ME!}"
… Really? This is what it's been reduced to?
This is just sad.
You raise a hand, and the Transistor ceases flailing for a second, perfectly parallel to the ground, leaving the Beowolf sitting on top, not a care in the world.
Finger up, palm in.
Both sword and Grimm shoot into the air fast enough that you actually do blink and miss it- you level your palm out, and the sound of your sword whistling through the air stops.
Flip your palm. You hear quiet whining from somewhere above you.
"... Jaune, that's just overkill-" Creme says from somewhere behind you.
Finger down.
"No kill quite like it."
You feel the impact before you hear it, and you see the sudden splat and subsequent whoomf of smog before you see your sword, a solid two inches into the ground, former Grimm slowly leaking out and evaporating from underneath it.
"... T? You good?"
"{When I get my Functions back I'm going to Ping() you in the goddamn balls-}" you hear muffled by the same two inches of grass and dirt it's currently compressing.
"He's good."
Yang doesn't even try to suppress her laughter this time.
… What? Really? After, everything that's happened, it really thinks it's going to get away with a complete non-sequitur like th-
{She's a known terrorist and White Fang member. She matches the body type of a figure caught on camera during the Dust train robbery a couple weeks ago. Also- Faunus. She has felinid ears, hidden under her bow. I found the file just now, while I was… cleaning up.}
… God. Dammit you wish this wasn't worth your attention so it can dodge the question.
I love how Jaune's reaction to this is not to freak out, but to go "I really want to not give a shit, because I am so done with today, and it's not even evening yet."
"Makes sense to me. What pieces do you wanna take?" Lumen asks you.
Yang hums to herself, inspecting the pieces with a very discerning eye.
"... How about a cute little pony?" she says after a few moments, holding up a white knight for Blake to see.
The cat Faunus, you suppose, smirks warmly at her partner.
"Sure."
Adorable. You turn to Lumen, considering the question, then realising it doesn't matter. You grab the black assassin off its pedestal, and watch as Creme follows suit with the white one.
Another great bit. And I'm guessing the assassin is the bishop? The Queen is usually a piece every decent chess player keeps a constant eye on, which makes it a poor assassin.
[] You Don't Know What The Viet Cong Is But You're Gonna Put Them To Shame- trap this motherfucker until it's more trap than motherfucker. Pitfalls, bear traps, underground Creeps waiting for something to come over them
[] This Is A Terrible Idea And Should Not Be Picked- Blake Belladonna, known (to you) White Fang member, responsible for robbing at least five million Lien's worth of Dust, and spent most of yesterday staring a hole through the back of Weiss's head, now going through Beacon's Initiation to become a Huntress. That's... a complex woman. Complex enough to warrant talking to, again, just to... get a feel for her. (Social Disaster trait in effect.)
Yeah, let's not try to engage in a very difficult and liable to escalate social situation in the middle of a battle, with Transistor barely functional and big Grimm on the way.
[] Turn on Blue- this brings Blue back from the dead, and unlocks the gun cabinet- you have Functions again! Unfortunately, without Bracket and the sensor suite, the Transistor is functionally blind- you'll have to guide its Functions manually, using your, er, less-than-stellar marksmanship skills. Ten minutes to bring your more social third online, given everything you've got.
While Jaune's aim is shit, it's better if he has the firepower, regardless. Even if it means getting close enough that he can't miss. []Jaunt alone would give him a lot of utility in a fight.
Well, that conversation with Blake is gonna be awkward as hell.
[X] Turn on Bracket- this option drags Bracket back from the dead, along with the ability to make a HUD. However, because he doesn't have access to any of the things that let him act like a normal, well-adjusted human being, the Transistor's putting a lock on the gun cabinet- you'll have a lot more battlefield information, but no Functions just yet. Using all 85 points of effort, it would take about 20 minutes to get it back online.
[X] Rotunda- the rotunda is your reception area- you wanna be up and in their face when they come in here? This is where you stand. Unfortunately, it's also not too defensible- you can be approached from three sides, and with very little clearance on any of them to get some good hits in before the enemy is upon you. Silver linings- there is no chance of anyone being hurt once they approach. It would never allow it.
[X] Large Scale Gentrification Project- Creating a defensible position is actually shockingly easy when you're using a thinking material. Shore up the ruins, whichever ones you pick, and essentially pull what you did with the White Fang, except… bigger. Way, way bigger. Will it be enough to hinder the larger creatures of Grimm? You have no idea- but this is where you will find out.
[X] Nothing- just sit there and wait, micromanage a while, you know, try and ignore the massive Grimm people may or may not be leading this way.
I do somewhat dislike how little we can do about Jaune being completely screwed in the event of the Transistor being put temporarily offline.
I'm not exactly sure how much discussion has been done on this subject, but could we create a secondary terminal, with just enough processing power to facilitate a "Jaune's brain doesn't fry" state and maybe the very smallest degree of self defence.
Like, maybe make it a scroll form factor, strap it under our clothes, and keep it quarantined from the main branch and offline unless it's needed.

Not only can we, we just did. Maybe. Probably. Semblance offloading to the Process is that backup. We wouldn't be throwing around Functionmancy without Mr. Nobody and the Wonder Twins, but if this happens again we should be functional.

[X] Large Scale Gentrification Project
[X] Nothing
I'm actually torn a bit between Blue and Bracket. I'm tempted towards Blue because we don't need to be able to aim well when there's giant Grimm and we have unlimited ammo. At the same time Bracket's awareness paired with our Tactics skills means that Jaune could better organize the defense.
Potential problem there being, he has Tactics skill, not necessary leadership. Mitigating factor being hunters don't need instructions, they can work on information, so he'd be of use even if he flubbed hypothetical leadership rolls.
As for doing something, Lumen already implied he had crazy family. It's not really a surprise, and best left for later.

The narration straight up calls it out as weird, so it's not much of a find, but just so everyone in the backseats notices - the curly braces around that interjection were invisitext.
Almost certainly related to the ghost in the shell we've got haunting our sword, but it's kind of spoopy that it can dump thoughts in Jaune's brain without him immediately noticing they're foreign.
This part came about because I did genuinely put it in as a line from Blue completely without thinking about why that's, you know, not a thing that should be happening, and then, pretty much exactly around the point I wrote 'wait, which uncle Janus,' I had to stop and ask myself 'wait, what the fuck?'
The dynamic between Jaune and his AI buddies has become so ingrained in me over the past two years that using that dynamic has actually become a habit I perform without thinking. Then I realised it was a good line, remembered the upgrade scene where he already hears voices in his head out of some ingrained habit, and just ran with it.
I won't say if it's a sign of something to be concerned about, but that's its origin, for sure.
This part seemed like it either needed editing, or some indication that it wasn't normal text. It switches to first person, which is generally indicative of @Prok talking to us as GM, but I don't know if that was the intention here.
Taking these together since they're the same question-
The narrator, the person saying 'you' all the time, is best thought of as being, well, that character's internal narrative, so to speak- the verbal part, anyway. That's why it changes a little depending on what character is currently the viewpoint- because while most people's thought processes follow the same basic principles, they're all still gonna have their own little flairs and quirks, like Creme's tendency to fall back on metaphor to describe strong emotion, Bianco's short, clinical sentences as he observes the situation, only really pulling away from that when he's panicking, Jaune's propensity for half-formed thoughts of panic, alarm, stupid jokes- the kind of things that don't get the time to fully create themselves before the internal narrative moves along.
In short, it's the same guy who's been saying 'you' this entire time in Jaune's head- except now he's breaking out of the passive narrator role because things have gotten that bad. It's a realisation that's so big that it becomes a shock to the system, so bad that the realisation that he's about to go down like a sack of potatoes doesn't feel entirely real- as if it has to be hand-delivered by his internal narrative for it to sink in, instead of just being passively commented on.
Maybe it worked, maybe it didn't, that was my intention and I like it enough that I'm keeping it because it definitely got people's attention.
...wow. Jaune is so bad at aiming that pointing a sword in a straight line to a target (a larger-than-human-sized target, no less) is a task that he is significantly more likely to fail at than succeed at.
Being absolutely fair to him, he's aiming from a point that isn't his personal perspective to a moving target and having to actually self-correct without any assistance. That he hit it at all was really more a matter of the fact that his bullet is the size of a surfboard.
Another great bit. And I'm guessing the assassin is the bishop? The Queen is usually a piece every decent chess player keeps a constant eye on, which makes it a poor assassin.
Remnant Chess has 10 individual pieces- the six regular pieces you know of, then the Archbishop, the Chancellor, the Assassin, and the Shaman.
It's Capablanca chess with two more pieces, basically- one a Discworld reference that's probably got some cultural inertia in Remnant as well because, deathworld, and then the Shaman, a piece based in the role of the kind of people who used those Dust-lined spears you find in the museums to bring down the wrath of God on anything they don't like.
My reasoning is thus:
If you look closely, you'll see that there are 10 pedestals for black and white pieces, 20 in total- assuming that there are no repeating pieces, and that each piece is unique so there's no confusion come team creating time, then it's easy to assume that Remnant's version of chess just has more pieces overall.
but apparently that's WRONG and I'm DUMB and INTERESTING WORLDBUILDING BAD
[X] This is a Terrible Idea and Should Not Be Picked
You can't name an option like that and expect some people not to vote for it, even if we know it will be a disaster in some fashion.

Eh, I personally feel it didn't get across what you wanted quite right, but to get that across and still feel right in the story would probably require way, way too much editing to get right.
Might have been worth not calling it chess or calling it something like Mistrali chess. Jayne is the type of character where knowing random trivia is normal.
Since chess exists in our world we expect our chess unless there's some modifier keyword to let us know that it isn't our chess.
I might be focusing on this more than necessary since I just looked back at another RWBY fic, A More Flawed Gem, recently. It's the best example of creating cultural and linguistic distinctions for the characters and integrating them into the setting I've found in a fanfic, and probably better than some actual novels I've read

I am somewhat worried about the PR implications of some of the Process use, like, the traps would probably be the least effective overall, but they're the stealthiest option available, they could probably be deployed, activated and packed up with very few people the wiser.
On the other hand, White Tide is extremely noticeable and pretty disconcerting, army spawning on a dime as it were, and Gentrification is even more alarming, if I'm imagining it right and we'd basically be turning a big chunk of forest into marble bunkers and chest high walls. (and beacon would probably need to do a good deal of landscaping once the process leaves again)
What I'm trying to get across is some of these might blow the fridge-horror "your city is now in range of The Landscape Disintegrator" alarm we're trying to sidle up to slow enough to not set it off.
I'm pretty sure the Process can return the matter to something resembling its original state after we're done with it. The concerns about visibility are valid, but I think we've got the cleanup handled.

Remnant Chess would take place on a 13x13 board, to account for the extra pieces, and the Shaman is, as I mentioned, based in the role of those old men who held lightning on a stick- brilliant at long-range, but very feeble if you can get in close. It can only capture pieces that are a square away from it, and only after moving towards said piece- it's basically a king with the capture radius shifted out one square. If you can get a piece inside that radius, it can't capture that piece. It is also the third singular piece, alongside the king and queen, hence the odd number of squares.
The Assassin, unlike in Stealth Chess, doesn't have the slurk- instead, at the beginning of the game, it can be placed on any square on your half of the board, and move off the edge of the board to again be placed on any square on the board, so long as it's the same colour as it was originally placed on, and it can't immediately capture something the next turn. It moves three spaces in any diagonal direction, it can jump over pieces in its way- it's basically a third, lesser bishop that adds a measure of unpredictability to the game.
I'm pretty sure the Process can return the matter to something resembling its original state after we're done with it. The concerns about visibility are valid, but I think we've got the cleanup handled.
Sort of- they're really good at making themselves look like other things, down to matching the look, smell, feel, and chemical structure of just about anything it assimilates. If it consumed a forest, and then mimicked the forest, unless someone busted out the electron microscope, nobody would be the wiser.
See, the problem is the part immediately preceding that mimicry, where the Process is decidedly unsubtle.
Can you imagine, if the Process just ate a forest and like an hour later, the forest was there again, exactly how you remembered it?
That's- that's several thousand Lien blown on a therapist, right there.
Anyway, vote closes at 8pm GMT tomorrow, and currently, staying in the rotunda, creating a fortress, asking Lumen some uncomfortable questions, and raising Bracket from the dead is winning!
Also, write-in aggregation: the only write-in so far is from Tazered, and is thus:

As many emplacements, Creeps, Badcells, whatever other iterations appear out of nowhere as the Process can manage. You will drown them in bodies.

[X] Ask Lumen A Maybe Uncomfortable Question- you recognise that spiderweb. Hell, you watched the logs of the Transistor and the Process fighting Bianco. That ain't a coincidence. Nothing accusatory, of course not, but... a gentle inquiry to dip your toes on the subject.

Nobody should die. [X] THE WHITE TIDE IS NOW- focus on bodies rather than defenses. As many emplacements, Creeps, Badcells, whatever other iterations appear out of nowhere as the Process can manage. -[X] Turn the Rotunda into a killing field.
--[X] Traps manned by process bodies. The aim here is to stall the large Grimm long enough to allow the chased Hunters to open distance. Have Lumen help. Maim not kill.
--[X] Rings of defences leading up to the Tower taking advantage of the ruins. Emplace barriers to ensure the path to the Tower and the Tower itself has cover. This should also help slow the progress of any large Grimm.
--[X] Clearly mark a safe path for retreating Hunters to get through quickly. Big bold letters "Safe Path". make this path viable for only Hunters to quickly progress through.
--[X] Populate the defences with heavy weapon emplacements, as many as possible. Overlapping fields of fire on the Rotunda and along the safe path to the Tower where the teams stand ready to finish off whatever gets through. [X] Nothing- just sit there and wait, micromanage a while, you know, try and ignore the massive Grimm people may or may not be leading this way.

[x] This Is A Terrible Idea And Should Not Be Picked- Blake Belladonna, known (to you) White Fang member, responsible for robbing at least five million Lien's worth of Dust, and spent most of yesterday staring a hole through the back of Weiss's head, now going through Beacon's Initiation to become a Huntress. That's... a complex woman. Complex enough to warrant talking to, again, just to... get a feel for her. (Social Disaster trait in effect.)
