You have time on your hands, and no strict mandate on how to spend it. Everyone has their little habits and rituals before combat. Kitty, you know, is going to be up in the gym, punching things for the next hour at least. Azara has probably already roped Sunny into a half dozen rounds of her latest puzzle game obsession.

As for yourself, you consider, briefly, the period mystery novel that you have loaded onto your tablet back in your quarters. But you're approaching the last third, with the heroine on the verge of solving the case of the Dress Shop Murder once and for all. You know yourself well enough to predict that once you get into that, you won't want to put it down.

Besides, you've already figured it out: It was the shopkeeper's mother.
This could've had so much potential. Alas, it wasn't chosen T_T

[X] Heavy

Our job and our experience is taking out ships, yeah? Not as if we can fight an enemy mecha ace either way.

[X] Light

We're a pirate, high speed low drag is how we live and die.
I mean the description of Heavy explicitly calls out it as being what we would have killed for as a pirate. Makes sense, pirates want to avoid combat as much as possible, you don't exactly have the deep pockets of a government and you're in it for a profit; minimum expenditure of resources for maximum return is what a pirate wants. Any target with an actual protection detail of Mecha is exactly what most pirates want to avoid.

That said we're no longer a pirate. And we know OOC that we're heading into an ambush. Of course we also have indications that we're going to be up against fast with an unfamiliar weapon, event the Light might not give us any advantage. Additional armor might, but we'll have a difficult time hitting it with weapons designed mostly to go against less agile targets.

Hmmm...

You know, we did the more maneuverable, sensors type thing last time with the Rose. Let's go for more of a bruiser style this time.

[X] Heavy

Jay rolls his eyes. "He's a damn-sexy man. I'm not blind. It's hard to care much about that with the amount of smug he's radiating, not to mention the uniform."

"The uniform probably comes off," you say, voice lascivious.
Good to know that our fellow mechapilots have working eyes, they'll prove vital in the battles to come.

And while the smugness might not come off by itself, I think it could plausibly be washed out if you gave him a few runs through the cleaners.

... Also, remind me here, have we ever actually seen Owusu with the uniform off? Because that might actually be an unproven hypothesis.

He laughs a little at that. "Well, that's not wrong," he says. "We're... fine, Kana. As close as we're ever going to get, anyway. You just really know where to push." Some of his earlier anger comes back in those last words, but he's largely relaxed. He's not glaring at you, anyway.

"It's my chief talent," you say, with a cocky smile. You gave him a little wave, and you're back out the door before he can think better of it.
And when you get down to it, isn't the most important part of piloting machinery knowing which buttons to press when? We were made for this kind of work.

"I'm ready to hijack a transport and get called heroic for it, for once in my life," you say.

Nearby, Kitty quirks a smile. "Are they going to start calling us heroic, now?" she asks. "Parades and everything?" She's nearly upside down relative to you and Azara, one foot hooked through a handhold as she fixes her blonde hair up into a tight enough bun not to be a problem with her helmet seals.

"Well, I like to imagine someone telling me that," you admit.
Note to self: If anyone ever calls Kana heroic/a hero, she's going to die within approximately two updates.

The flag has been planted.

[X] Heavy
Others have pointed out many good reasons to pick the Heavy, so I am just going to point out that armour is inherently cool and that being able to break anything* you manage to hit is great for boosting Kana's popularity with the young'uns!
*Cheating prototype weapons excluded

AIJ PROVISIONAL COMBAT MECHA OS ver. 0.5.1b, reads the text, as the machine around you hums to life.

Oh god, it's not even out of beta testing yet? We're fucking doomed.

[X] Light

Let's be real, this is the most appropriate option. Really corresponds with our princely personality, also makes every single fight an existential threat, which really ramps up the tension.

Prove me wrong; but wait, you can't, cuz I'm right.

[X] Standard

We're supposed to come to the aide of either squad that gets into trouble, right? Being balanced squad seems best for that. It's not like we're an Ace squad with min-maxed equipment.

[X] Standard

Considering our entire squad will be equipped with these, I'd rather have something reasonably capable in all areas.

Technically in this operation, that's Squad C's job. That's pretty common, since the Lancers are older models and work best in that kind of supporting role.

[x] Light

Let's zip around fast with an anti-mecha sword!

Coincidentally, this also means we have a good sensor suite, which means the most chances for Amani to show up and be useful.

Guys, guys, guys. We aren't an ace, that's right, we're a redshirt. What do redshirts do? They die so that the important characters don't have to!

Which suit configuration it's the easiest to die in? The light one. Like, objectively, it only has increased speed and maneuverability going for it, and since mechas aren't planes and we fight in space and not atmosphere, that's going to help us not a lot.

An ace could do something with it, but we aren't an ace, so.

Gentlepeople, I rest my case.
