Kinematics has a good idea about doing both. We do need to talk to family to get a good idea of what's happening here and figure out where Matoko might go. And examining the actual scene ourselves may give us hints on the "true" nature of events that someone that's, for lack of better wording, mundane might miss. I'm not sure I agree on the order though. If we examine the garden first, then talk to the family, we run a risk of being spotted first and having to try and explain ourselves for poking around, perhaps even be mistaken for the culprit if this wasn't done by Matoko herself. If we speak to the family first, we kinda have to explain who we are and why we're there, but we'd still have to do that even if we examined the garden, we're just doing it with less information to work off of. But we don't have to worry about getting caught while we look around, which could let us take an even closer examination.

[X] Talk to her family.
-[X] Let Madoka take the lead position. Play Moemura, deeply concerned about a friend, but who had to get dragged along by Madoka in order to actually come visit.
-[X] Try to gain information on Akagi's behavior (left due to an argument? hostile to parents? angry at competition results? unstable personality?), and any ideas on where she might hide to recover.
[X] Investigate the garden.
-[X] Examine monument. Determine who the gravestone is for.
-[X] Examine damage to the rose bushes. Does it look like a tantrum, or is there the possibility of an outside attack, like what happened at Mami's apartment?
-[X] Is there any trail of damage leading out of the garden?

Play Moemura, deeply concerned about a friend
deeply concerned about a friend
Ignoring that I always think playing Momura is a ticking bomb waiting to go off...

No. Claiming we're a friend could so easily fall apart explosively. Like if we knew she was a social butterfly? Okay. But what if she wasn't? What if she had so few friends, or none at all, that her parents knew all of them?

Really bad cover.

"Friend" in the abstract. Aware of from the sidelines, and wanted to interact with. Perhaps "stalker", in less sugar-coated words. (Homura does have experience with that, after all.) A variant example would be saying that Sayaka is a friend, on the first day they met. There was no history between them, as far as Sayaka knew. Sayaka merely decided that Homura was a friend almost as soon as they met. And even from Homura's side, despite her standard feelings for Sayaka, she would still be able to claim herself (reluctantly) as a friend to any who might have asked.

'Friend' has a very broad range of meanings, and for the intended cover — using Moemura as a shy wallflower that needed to be dragged along by her more outgoing acquaintance, Madoka — 'friend' should have implications that are obviously not "has known our daughter for years".

Also to be fair playing Moemura was working fine this timeline until Suddenly Most Of The Whole Masquerade Was Accidentally'd, with respect to Sayaka. As long as we don't get another Witch or something right up in the middle of our attempts to investigate, we should be okay?

.... we might also do well to ask Madoka for her input on the plan we're proposing to see if she has any additions or thoughts about how she might be able to keep us from Accidentally-ing the social part of this investigation. She might well catch something we miss.

Ticking time bomb, yes. Homura isn't one of those people that can just up and live a lie 24/7, the moemura mask would eventually crumble and collapse. Or she would.

Moemura is a lie that just sets up things to go south when the truth comes out later. Its not just pointless, its an active liability to use 99% of the time.

It's not as though we're suggesting to live in it. We're trying to illicit sympathy during an investigation, not trying to find a new house to play cuckoo in the nest at.

It doesn't have to last longer than maybe an hour, here, unless I'm drastically misunderstanding something.

"But moemura is the truth and the light and everything else is clearly nothing more then harmful copping mechanisms because otherwise she'll never be able to get with madoka because she wont be able to accept her place"-Most of the Fandom

The more it is shown around madoka the worse it will get.

You used Sayaka as an example. The same Sayaka we knew we'd have to be interacting with repeatedly for the next couple of months and was friends with Madoka.

That 1% I left, that's basically for this situation. People we need something from and that Moemura might help us get more easily but that we'll never be seeing again. Hopefully.

Most of the Fandom doesn't get how trauma and PTSD actually works then.

I was attempting to make the point that in the short term we had been applying it at that point, nothing had been going wrong with it aside from outside situations making it no longer tenable. I was not trying to suggest that long term use was a good plan, considering the context we're speaking in now is not one where we're planning long term use. That being said I can see where how I phrased it may have caused a misunderstanding; I apologise.

The more it is shown around madoka the worse it will get.

I'm not sure I understand what you're meaning by this. The worse what will get?

The urge to do more of it in an attempt to make madoka's life 'happier'.

Huh. That's an interesting point. That's something to keep in mind yeah.

That said, I'm not sure it applies to the timeline here an now anymore, though? Because we've just told Madoka everything. She's not stupid- with that context, she'll know what our lies look like, at least the Moemura ones, and they won't make her any happier. I suspect they'll concern her, actually- I think even pretending for practical purposes like now will concern her. Enough that Homura won't feel like it's a tempting option, to keep doing it.

... future timelines, though, if and when we need them- those are a place I definitely agree about keeping an eye out for that. Good catch.

I honestly don't have anything better. Side note to anyone playing Magia Record, are any of you trying to land a particular White Devil and her totally-not-girlfriend partner (when the latter comes out) in your teams? As well as the welfare'd walking magic nuke? Good luck to anyone who is.

(I am of course referring to Nanoha Takamachi, Fate Testarossa Harlaown, and Hayate Yagami)

I was pretty surprised to see that crossover pop up – got me to start the game up again (once) after not touching it since release week (for the English/USA release).

Got Nanoha from the pity counter and have about 180 rolls left to try to get Fate.

But this isn't the right thread for that. We've got a thread for the game.

The Disappearance of Akagi Matoko | Part 1

"...We'll want to talk to them, to find out more. You should take point on this." You explain, knowing that, for all the social competence you have gained, you can't fake the same earnest kindness Madoka exudes naturally. Besides, giving her a chance to play an active role will be good for her long-term survival.

Madoka smiles brightly at that, "Right! I'll do my best!"

Smiling a bit at her exuberance, you leap down behind the building and set her down before transforming back into your mundane form and putting on your glasses. A bit of magic throws your hair back into braids.

"I'm going to play the schoolgirl for a bit. Hopefully that will set them at ease."

Madoka frowns a little, looking at you, "...You look better without the costume, I think. It's kind of cute, but it really doesn't suit you."

You nod, grimacing a bit, "I don't care for them much either, but they help keep the attention down, and are a bit grounding, when I get excited."

She looks oddly sad at your words, but moves on, "Alright, so, I'm guessing we're classmates worried about a casual friend?"

You nod, "Of course. It's the simplest option for cover. It's fortunate we're not wearing our school uniforms.."

"Right. We don't know for sure where she goes to school, yet. What exactly are we looking to find out about?" Madoka asks, setting to tidying up her clothing after being carried for so long.

"What happened to Akagi, what she's like, and where she might go if she's in trouble. Preferably in that order--the second question is something we should already know, and the third might anger them if they've been searching for her."

Madoka nods, "Then I'll start by asking about why she hasn't been at school, and if she's okay. She's not, obviously, and it might upset them, but they'll probably explain. After that, I'll try to get them to just talk about her some, guess little things about her if I'm forced to. Once we've gotten what we can, I'll ask where she might go, if they haven't found a body, at least."

You go through your inventory in passing, trying to find anything that might help here, but you honestly can't think of anything that would.

"Okay, here we go."

Madoka walks up to the front door and knocks, and you have to rush to get in position behind her, pulling yourself into your "Moe" persona as quickly as you can.

After a few seconds, the older man from before opens the door, eyes slightly red and expression stern, "Yes? Who--" He cuts off as he sees the two of you, eyes widening slightly.

You fidget, trying to look intimidated to guilt trip him a bit, while Madoka jumps into the conversation head first, "We're friends of Akagi's. From school. We haven't seen her for a while...is she okay, sir?"

He gives you a long look, nodding slowly, "...No, I'm afraid not. Akagi is...you said you're friends of hers from school?"

Madoka nods, and you follow up after a moment of calculated hesitation.

He heaves a sigh, "Well, that's something, at least. I was afraid..." He shakes his head, "...I...I'm afraid she won't be coming back to school. My daughter..." He pinches the bridge of his nose, and walks inside, "I don't care anymore. Just come in for a moment. I'll explain."

The two of you exchange looks, then follow. He goes to the parlor, where he sinks into an armchair, waving the two of you over to the couch, "First of all? Don't go into a stranger's home without your parents permission. Even if you know someone in their family."

Madoka nods, "We know. We just...we're really worried, and we really want to know, so...please?"

He sighs, "Yes, of course. Akagi...I'm very sorry to have to tell you that my daughter is missing. The police presume her to be dead."

You gasp in feigned horror, while Madoka does the same--presumably more honestly than you, "What?! But...but...how? What happened?!"

He sighs, "I'm not entirely sure. She vanished last Wednesday--that morning, when I left for work, was the last time I saw her. Apparently, some other people saw her at the Garden Show."

"The Garden Show?" Madoka asks.

He nods, "I'm surprised she didn't tell you. We have a rose garden--it was my wife's, before she passed. Normally, we show it together, for competitions, but I had to work late that night. Apparently, something happened to the garden after the party--the roses are all gone, now." He sighs heavily, "And so's my Akagi. The police say she did it--that she destroyed the garden in a rage, then went somewhere quiet and killed herself."

Madoka bites her lip. You...you find yourself shaking, slightly. You don't understand why, but you can't seem to stop.

"Do you--" Madoka hesitates, then forges on, "Do you think that's true?"

He shakes his head immediately, almost snarling at you as he snaps, "Of course not!"

Madoka flinches back (you realize moments later that you forgot to, but he's probably not paying attention at this point), and he grimaces, voice softening, "Sorry about that, girls. No, Akagi might...she was stubborn, but I won't say she would never kill herself. She didn't have any real friends besides you girls, as far as I know, and she--" He pauses, and changes what he's going to say, "I've worried about her, before. There's one thing I'm sure of, though."

He looks Madoka dead in the eye, "She would never have destroyed the garden like that. She loved that garden--she would spend every evening out there, caring for the roses and making sure they were happy, as she liked to say. Even when they were sickly and dying, like they were a couple of months back, she still went out and tried to take care of them.

"Whatever happened that night, she didn't destroy the garden--which means someone else did. If my little girl killed herself, that's why. If she didn't..." He sighs, "I haven't given up yet, but I can't imagine she wouldn't have come home if she could."

Madoka glances over to meet your eyes, and you give a slight nod. She turns to him, and talks to him, "Do you know anywhere she might have gone, if she wanted to hide?"

He shakes his head, "Nowhere I haven't already checked. I was hoping you girls might know something."

Madoka returns the gesture, looking despondent, "We were friends, but she never mentioned anything like that."

You frown, feeling like you're forgetting something, but unable to bring it to the surface.

Akagi's father sighs heavily, "I see...well, please, come tell me if you think of anything. Even if she's...even if she's really gone, I want to be sure."

Madoka nods, "Of course. We'll do everything we can. Would...would you mind if we saw the garden? Maybe we might notice something the police might have missed, since we were friends with her?"

He smiles sadly, "Of course. I don't think there's anything for you to find, but...she'd want her friends to see the garden, even if it's not what it once was."

He waves over towards the door to the garden, "It's right over there. Feel free to look around. I...I'll stay here. Too many memories."

The two of you nod, standing, and Madoka walks over, biting her lip before putting a hand on the man's shoulder, "...We'll try our best."

He forces a clearly pained smile, "Thank you, but you should leave it to the police. No more parents should lose a child because of this." In spite of her words, he doesn't try to stop the two of you as you walk outside to investigate.

[To Be Continued...]

Hmm. Two instances of something affecting Homura. Some sort of fear reaction (shaking) after the description of the police's conclusion, and later feeling like she's forgetting something after the comment about where Matoko might want to hide.

Hmm. Just realized we still don't know what Matoko looks like. There weren't any mentions of any photos in the room — which itself is a bit odd, considering the father is grieving like that. You'd expect him to have a picture out, to look at. And likely a photo of his wife, as well, given she died some time back. Was that just a lack of detail in the update, or were there really no photos in the room?

Another minor thing, that I realized after editing the above paragraphs from Akagi to Matoko: The rumors listed her name as Akagi Matoko, and also listed Mikuni Souichirou, suggesting that it was written in standard Japanese name order, with family name first. So Akagi should be her family name (which is why I changed it, to avoid confusion with the father), while Matoko would be her given name. However the father referred to her as "my Akagi", and again referred to her as "Akagi" in later comments. Notably, it's after the first "my Akagi" paragraph that Homura gets the chills.

Unless I'm confusing the name order, this adds more weirdness to the father.

The name order was a byproduct of inconsistency early on. I'm using western name order now, and intend to continue doing so.

There were no photos clearly in view in the portion of the house Homura has passed through, but there's what appears to be a closed photo album on a small table next to the armchair.

Alright, in that case I'm thinking we need to dig into our memories. We seem to have something buried there and she may still be savable if she's having a slower grief spiral/is trying to hold on.

OK.

Although, I finally figured out why "Akagi" seemed so familiar a name. It's the name of the main character of the mahjong/gambling manga, "Akagi" (notably, Akagi is the family name, which is probably why I was thinking of it that way). That would have been an amusing link, given the secondary connections of an Akagi family to the yakuza, and thus looping all the way back around to Homura.

There were no photos clearly in view in the portion of the house Homura has passed through, but there's what appears to be a closed photo album on a small table next to the armchair.
And now I want to do a little scan of the house before we leave, checking the photo album and Akagi's room (using a small bit of timestop to get past the father). But that can wait til after the garden inspection.

I presume the whole memory thing is somehow related to the...what are we calling Momento!Meguca now? I keep forgetting since we used Momento!Meguca so much early on. But I presume its somehow related to those girls and whatever the reason Homura's memories are a bit frayed when it comes to previous loops. She had a similar reaction to Nagisa when she first met her earlier if I recall correctly.

The fear I imagine is the realization that Akagi might've witched out already, especially when combined with the Momento!Meguca possibility I mentioned above. If she really does need all the Momento!Meguca to achieve her Golden Ending, we might have missed our chance for this loop already. Meaning we have to move very fast in later loops to save Akagi, practically first thing after leaving the hospital. Of course, all this is speculation based on the assumption that what happened to Akagi is she witched out. If something different happened we might have more time to save her.
