Beneath Celestial Depths (An Arpeggio of Blue Steel Quest)

Its been a while since I read this quest, are we planning a Sudden Yet Inevitable Betrayal to everyone?
While that is fitting for our character, at the moment Blue Steel is the only ones even remotely friendly to us that we could possibly reach. So sometime in the future perhaps but right now we don't have anyone to betray them to.

[X] Agree to attempt waking Iona. The reward is just too enticing.

A bit early to move on, if we stick around a bit longer, we can hopefully leave as allies rather than passing acquaintances.

A big gun is fine too. And if we do manage it, we will earn a hell of an amount of rep with blue steel.

The last attempt to wake Iona didn't fill me with a lot of hope for trying again right now.

Look that cannon is tempting

But that monster in the deep isn't going to give up anyone without a fight. And we still haven't figured out how things are loosening up now.

Boston and Iona was stolen away with loved ones on deck. Mary saved our hull and near certainly woke us up in the first place but how we don't know.

It didn't work for anyone else.

We didn't get past Iona's perimeter defenses for long last time with the explicit note it'll be harder the next attempt. Given what I'm hearing of her if we can wake her up even slightly she'll probably pull some attention away from the abomination with needing attention to keep her under.

But it's not going to be easy and I don't think said abomination has the memory of a goldfish

Maybe if we stick around long enough Surcouf and Blue Steel will start to somewhat like each other. I doubt Surcouf has had the luxury of backup very often and maybe she'll start to appreciate it in time.

It might be best to wait and prepare a few contingencies and plans for our next encounter with code-thulu before trying to wake anyone up again. Maybe give it a few updates and then wake up Iona as a parting gift should we decide to leave?

It was made pretty clear to us that that abomination wouldn't fall for shenanigans again, and isn't interested in diplomacy. It's like some sort of virus, trying to put as many fog ships as possible to sleep.

We need to better prepare, figure out what worked against it and -more importantly- why it worked.

Has Gunzou be debriefed how the "waking" process went or did we keep it in the cards?

Also, I'm kinda sad that you didn't have Surcouf add a second "shocked" to her feigned offense. For more of a Casablanca reference you see, the character who said it is even French.

hmmm A thought but if we look at the timeline when Surcouf woke up there seemed to be an rise in activity for Fog Cores before settling down except for Boston who needed a little push which makes me wonder if there is going to be another general increase of Fog Core Activity.

I, for one, am ready for round two

Yeah, we'll need some proper prep-work for the second attempt. I do think we should go for waking Iona in exchange for the Gravity Cannon, just not right away. Best to stick around and use Blue Steel resources to make those preparations, instead of risking ourselves going into this unprepared chasing that big reward.

I want to do more exploring--and it's not like Blue steel is going anywhere. They've got a fog ship now, so they're quite well protected. We can go rambling and inform ourselves about the state of the world, make more connections while also coming back to Antartica periodically. There is no actual reason to stay in the Bluesteel base yet.
