I disagree that leadership is the only attraction of this option, half of my arguments about it are not so much about hard leadership but about soft influence in the organization. We do not necessarily need to lead the organisation, but if we prefer not to having the guy in charge in our debt and knowing that it is because of us he has the position brings almost the same set of benefits.

And I disagree that it is three actual jobs. I see the undumgi as an instrument of a spymaster and am baffled on why one would deprive herself of it if offered.
It would already use up a third of our actions just getting into position to take the role. Being the person people come to with their problems, mediating disputes, playing liaison between faiths, species and settlements - all is a lot of work, not just time consuming but tiring, even if we don't take on a formal hat.
Sure, does feel better to not miss out on taverning.
We don't need to be putting time into leadership to be a VIP with lots of goodwill among the Dawi, trade contacts in the Empire and the most liquid funds available for investment of any private individual here. We can fund/buy a tavern whenever we like. Likewise other businesses, just remember that setting up businesses is a time sink even if we delegate running them.

We can set up our intelligence network among the Undumgi without taking on overall leadership duties and we can be a powerful patron to their eventual leader without having done their job first.

While going back to the Empire in the far future does not repel me, now is the time for consolidation, growth, and study, and there is no better place to do that than carving a home in the Karag. Writing those papers, investigating our personal treasure trove of artifacts for deeper undertanding, and in general building a refuge in the Eight Peaks is the most appealing choice to me, laying the foundations for Mathilde's next rise by deepening our knowledge of magic, crafting arms (whether that be greatswords, sniper rifles, or staffs) and artifacts, and in general learning to connect again in a fixed location with those that will be around her (which will be former comrades in arms, oddballs like her, or stout and dependable Dwarven companions).

That being said, Mathilde is also restless, and the players will want variety and action in their stew as well. For me, the battle actions have been a hell of a ride, but I'd like for our future heart-pumping action dose to be in the flavor of streets-and-daggers intrigue and political maneuvering rather than battlefield ops. Serving as Belegar's exterior spymaster is a shoe in in that sense, as we will not only serve that purpose, but will also add variety to the quest as his missions will probably take us to places beyond the Eight Peaks: Other Karaks, perhaps even the Empire. It's a compromise of sorts to those who don't want to be stuck in the Karaks too, as our duties will occasionally take us to places from Altdorf to Karak-Anzor or the Border Princes or beyond, while still being able to live in the Eight Peaks and research there.

To that effect:

[X] Travel to Karaz-a-Karak with King Belegar for the striking out of several well-aged grudges.

[X] There's a lot of prime real estate currently unclaimed. Stake out a prime position for a wizard's tower.

[X] Write a series of papers on the magical phenomena you witnessed. Or better yet, get your Journeymanlings to do the actual writing.

Agreed, it should be enough for us to appear in their room in the middle of night from time to time in order for us to have a friendly conversation.

Being the highest-ranked magical authority around and probably called just "The Wizard" or something similarly simple-but-impressive by the tens of thousands living here.
Ah, yes. Everyone knows The Wizard here at Karak Eight Peaks. The small wizard with the sub-wizards.

This suggests a future catching up on your pre-existing study topics.

This is the closest to what I want, since there isn't anything that directly suggests a near future studying at the Grey College for a year to round out magical ability, spell list, enchanting, and whatnot, but I also do want the snake juice and other stuff. And it's already leading, I see. So other than that...
The other study-related topic for me, and catching up on Stirland and boasting of our adventures to friends and seeing if Roswita is a little more sensible. Right now I'm thinking short term, but there might be stuff there to do. Also, advisoring again, and let's hear what the Grey Order has to say about all this.

[X] All this time away has made you miss your friends. Visit Anton and Wilhelmina.
[X] You've been out of touch for a while. Head to Barak Varr and then Altdorf, and catch up with what's been happening in the Empire.
[X] You're going to have a rough time explaining your windfall to the Bursars. Better to get that over with.

Y'know, I think I've figured out the author: It's Anton. He thought it was unfair all our awesome achievements would be forgotten, and also that we needed a nice boyfriend. Hence romance novels. He would know a lot about our personal journeys, and the rest can be filled in by his ghostgodwriter.
So... you're saying he shipped MattyvanHal all along?

I think he thought that both would be better of with someone they could really trust. For Abelheim, that doesn't really leave anybody else. For Mathilda, maybe Markus? He was probably the romantic rival in the first few books.
Anton maybe be an unrepentant shipper, but he's a shipper of taste and class, and he'll only ship well constructed boats based off solid chemistry.

I think first priority for the papers should be our shiny new Waaghbane skill (assuming the papers option wins.) Making sure that the colleges have a better grasp on dispersing greenskin magic would help them out a lot.

Any other suggestions for new research topics?

We've already spent the majority of the thread not researching the Quaysh juice, because there was always something more important. More time sensitive.

Reminder that we have a whole different audience since the break. A lot of us newbies are interested in clearing the backlog, which is why we've got one research action locked in and one cutting neck&neck for 3rd. I think circumstances have changed.

Also in favor of human leader:
- pretty sure dwarves trust us more than any other human. This kind of credibility is IMPORTANT for a faction leader.
- Mathilde being 'in charge' gives us a ton of credibility with all visitors, merchants, and Imperials that come through or that we go visit. Kinda the social difference between a knight and a baton?
- lets us both delegate AND step in to actually chose direction and use them as our resource.
- keeps us interacting with other humans, keeps connections to the empire (we will be the most relevant person in K8P to them- talk to us to get to the dwarves, talk to us to get to the humans here) and keeps Wulheart on-screen without additional personal actions.
- Mathilde *likes* being in charge, at least a little bit. People listen to her and do what she says. (Note: my opinion from reading)
- easy to lean out of quickly while retaining control.
- keeps us involved in the K8P leadership council meetings, not just the warcouncil ones.
- allows us to subtly exclude Sigmar worship, which is personal to her.

*Hisses*

Do not speak it's name, less we get beset with it. Again.

God, it's going to come back with a VEANGANCE in stirland. All those nobles and little kids listening to the stories of the tiny stirlander peasant girl, grown up to be a grey Magister cutting through armies with her huge sword and receiving accolades from dwarves while wearing an old witch-hunter's hat, in memory of her dead elector count.

I swear the kids will be running around in grey robes and pointy hats with swords for DECADES.

But also tbh I think that it'll drive rosalita batty to have her province go wizard-crazy.

Writing the paper actually removes a research project from our backlog. It'll get done in this 3-month period rather than being something we have to sink an action (or multiple actions) into in the future. Especially since we'll have other to help us write instead of doing the entire thing ourselves.
As far as I understand it these votes are the setup actions to actually do those actions and given our track record and all that happened I expect it to take more than three months. Additionally the vote option itself directly refernces working with Johann on Skaven tech, which is a Big Project that I don't want do because we have too much already and that's going to add yet another action sink.

Consider this: Being in a position of responsibility over a whole bunch of people is going to progress Mathilde's progress towards Magister Lord and general College rep tremendously.

And that means more freedom, faster access to various neat new magic spells, improved personal growth, more regard from Asarnil...

Well, there was that plan to marry lots of wizards into the nobility. We could revisit that :V

Yeah, but it references it as a perhaps, alongside everything else. it'll be an option that we don't have to take.

If you want to clear our research backlog, writing papers isn't actually the vote you want, because it isn't about that, it's about adding more research topics. The tower vote is what you need for actually clearing things out.

Shipping with Marcus and van Hal? (And I guess Regimand, though Anton might never have remembered seeing him). Where did poor Anton start thinking Mathilde had real daddy issues liking for older men? :V

I think "the bit in the vote" happens, while "the bit in italics" is the possible future path.
Like we will be visiting Karaz a Karak, whether or not we become DIPLOMATTY as well.
Their showing today would do credit to a line of Ironbreakers." You prevent an eyebrow from raising, knowing that the line of men had more than a little assistance in their actions, and instead of watching Codrin receive the praise for his men you're watching to catch the surly look Kragg shoots at King Belegar. Interesting.
So, clever Stewardship+++ Belegar has been working towards his Undumgi since here. I'd wager he arranged with Kragg to butter up the manling vagabonds after he saw their performance, then praise their bravery (some genuine, some Kragg-boosted) with an eye to obtaining a force to guard the gates and trade route/pass. Plump their pride with some flattery, then offer them a job.
Belegar "The Lucky King" just had things work out even better than he thought, with the also-strong performance in the second battle.

All right, I'll go ahead and unlurk for this.

[X] You could help the Undumgi and the Ulricans establish themselves.

Papers seems cool & I wouldn't hate it winning but I really don't look forward to the monofocus a double-research result implies and Tower (which I also find cool & don't hate) is unassailable.

Yeah, I'm pretty much in agreement that taking control of the town makes us relevant and powerful *now*, while research is setting us up to be relevant and powerful in the future. Prefer to grab the opportunity we have to setting up a run at something very similar in a decade.

Speaking of: I'm viewing the next arc as basically 'Mathilde goes and trains on a mountain' from the perspective of the empire: we were known, we went away and got a hell of a lot better, upon return we will play in the big leagues. So I'm looking for 5-10 years of management, research, romance, and war as we build out a home base; then we'll get pulled back in because we *are* loyal to the empire, and we can run the third act.

In all honesty, getting treated the way she was by her dad would set up a pretty strong craving for approval and acceptance from older men. In a large fraction of people, at least- not going to claim anything dispositive.

But I really want her to get some romance. Someone who likes her not for terrifying usefulness, or because she is impressive and competent, but because she's actually a smol geek who can be very silly and wants affection. Let her be human, not assasin or spymistress or wizard. Now's the Time for it.

To me, the contentious vote comes down to 'Would I rather read about Mathilde writing an academic paper, or would I rather interact with the wolf-lads and the hard-as-stone adventurers?'

So I went back and edited in a vote for getting them settled.

Wasn't he murdered in a terrible chaos plot?
Personally, I think it's just a lack of younger alternatives. There's Anton, and unless you subscribe to the conspiracy theory that he's secretly Balthasat Gelt, that's a sibling relationship.

Correction: Having her journeymanlings write a paper. And frankly, I think that's hilarious.
