It means they think the Skaven (that are in the same room) are to blame. As far as I can tell, there's no extra risk involved, and it could definitely pay off.

Besides, if we look like a Skaven, then they aren't looking for a human wizard.
There are definitely extra risks over not doing it. One comes to mind immediately: Hanging around to be noticed as the obvious assassin requires that Mathilde, you know, hang around. Instead of immediately bolting. It doesn't really seem smart to deliberately draw attention to herself when people are already concerned about delays costing us scouting actions. As BoneyM said, "If you manage to escape and evade pursuit immediately after interfering or assassinating, it would not cost you any time. If. "

I don't think there's any negative value to looking like a human wizard, either. It's not like Mathilde could hide amongst the goblins.

Yeah, the more I think of it, the more I realize we shouldn't get fancy, we don't have the tools to guarantee discretion here, and the cost of not having as much information as we can get would be nasty.

A trap you're aware of is a trap that can be reversed after all.

Let's cheese it and make sure we can give as much warning as possible.

Agreed. And there will be more opportunities for assassination later too. Information and discretion is most important right now.
 
Regarding Substance of Shadow making us silent:
Yes. Also invisible, making it more difficult to aim.
Thing is, we probably have a decent number of reloads, and there's no penalty if we miss, since Mathilde would be invisible and inaudible.

[x] Cast Substance of Shadow then shoot the Goblin Leader. Then flee.

There's a chance that we'll miss with the first shot, but that probably doesn't matter, since misses are very unlikely to be noticed.

I vastly prefer the simpler version of the shooting plan. But I'd also love if @BungieONI and @Dessard could correct the spelling error in theirs.

If the plan was just to assassinate then I'd think we could potentially get out without a delay, but the current plan is all about being seen doing the Assassination disguised as a Skaven so that we can cause a fight. That almost certainly will delay things a bit.
Not really? It takes a couple of seconds for everyone to look at us and see a skaven and then we book it. Not much difference from doing it without disguise.

I much prefer the Temple of Grungni for the morale benefits, but any scouting is better than not.

I would much rather report that we discovered a Skaven – Goblin negotiation and got them to start killing each other than that we discovered a Skaven – Goblin negotiation and just let it happen.

@BoneyM will the phrasing "be seen as a Skaven assassin, then flee into the shadows" rather than "be seen fleeing as a Skaven assassin" have any mechanical penalties? As in, will she give up a turn of running/initiative/whatever game mechanic the chase will be implemented with? Is Mathilde going to stand there until they notice her, run immediately and hope it works, or some kind of middle ground?

I like the plan but it won't have my vote if it gives Mathilde the idiot ball.

+1. But I don't think you need to worry. QM applies common sense to our actions most of the time.
