I fear not the wizard who has practiced 10,000 spells once, but I fear the wizard who has practiced one spell 10,000 times.
Both of those are already dead to miscasts, I fear ;).

Somewhat off-topic - what is/was the sins/divided loyalties of other councillors? Kasmir is a zealot, Gustav is vainglorious, de Verezzo was embezzler, Schultz is a mad genius with "one big project". What are Anton's and Wilhelmina's? I would guess nepotism for Anton, but I don't remember him providing cushy jobs for his relatives, and I am stumped for Wilhelmina. Was she without divided loyalties because she was Van Hal's own candidate, or did she also have nepotism (which she resisted which led to conflict with her sons)?

[X] Doppelganger to look like one of the armored Skaven, then try and assassinate the Goblin Leader. Be seen as a Skaven assassin, then flee into the shadows

KISS principle. I don't want to get too fancy and end up obtaining nothing.

What are Anton's and Wilhelmina?
Wilhelmina was supposed to be Nepotism, but her loyalty to Van Hal and Stirland more or less negated that until EIC where her children showed their greed making her more harrowed and having to overwork (narratively).

Anton's flaw was supposed to be Incompetence (a diplomat with diplomacy score of 4 after modifiers). But due to the combined Powers of Loyalty, Honesty, Openmindedness, Friendship and Luck, he became a kick ass diplomat.

I hope people don't mind if I vote, very happy to have discovered this quest as it were resurrected. :)

Schultz was loyal to Talabecland, and Talabecland had trade concerns about Stirland. But the Stirlandian League got dismantled, and Ostermark's riverine ambitions in the east and the Middenland-Nordland drama to the north drew their attention away, and Schultz never ended up being activated.

You know what they say about spies, it's better to have them and not need them, than to need them and not have them.

His preference for building big stonking castles rather than roads and granaries was a character trait rather than a full-blown motivation.

I would like to say that I really, really dislike the Doppleganger assassination plot. It involves getting close enough to successfully attack, draws attention to us personally, and doesn't have a plan for escape. Take No Heed wouldn't work, because it breaks when we draw attention to ourself, which this plan relies on. Pall of Darkness might work, but we can't see through it either, so we'd be fighting our way through a crowd blind.

[X] Attempt to interfere with the Hall of the Moon...
-[X] By freeing the Orc prisoners.

I don't think the assasination plan is as guaranteed to cause chaos and backstabbing as everyone thinks. The goblins might just assume it's a different skaven faction attacking. Meanwhile, freeing the orcs is guaranteed to cause chaos.

What might also be a good action is collapsing the platform, but apparently we need some kind of plan to make it work, and we don't carry explosives with us.

I must say I love how @BoneyM writes charged situations for us with multiple moving parts and endless possibilities for action. I'd bet it's a lot of tabletop RPG experience showing.

We're close enough to attack with a gun, in fact Mathilde can make the shot right now from where she is.
You could. Close enough to line up an easy headshot, or charge them with Skywalk if you're feeling especially unsubtle.

We haven't micromanaged Mathilde's escape plan but there's a number of fairly obvious choices.
1. Drop a pall of darkness to block line of sight and run away, possibly on a shadow steed. Possibly followed up with some doppelganger + take no need.
2. Substance of Shadow to turn invisible and insubstantial.
3. Run away and Dread Aspect to send any pursuit running in the opposite direction.

Although thinking on it a bit more I wouldn't say no to just taking the shot while under Substance of Shadow. Sure it would lack the obvious fun of attacking while in Skaven disguise but it would certainly be safer for Mathilde and easier to avoid pursuit. Odds are chaos would probably occur regardless, especially if we shoot a few of the grunts to make sure they're riled up.

[X] Cast Substance of Shadow and Doppelganger then assassinate the Goblin Leader with the revolver. Fire any remaining bullets into nearby goblins and leave.

So yeah an alternative option that increases personal safety.

Edit: Actually may as well throw in doppelganger as well. That way if Substance of Shadow is lost we still appear to be a Skaven.

One thing that stood out to me in the update was:
... are much smaller Skaven clothed in rags and scars. With every crackle of their master's whip they flinch towards a pair of crude wagons, then settle down when they see that the negotiations continue.

I'm guessing that the Skaven are planning on releasing the beasts if things go wrong. Judging by how jumpy the Skaven slaves are, I'm pretty sure our assassination attempt will be enough to get them to do so. What do people think of this addition to the assassination vote?

Thank you, it's something I put a lot of focus on and I'm glad it's shining through. There's definitely a lot of overlap between quests and tabletop.

Can we use normal Silence on our gun?

You could, and it would prevent your gun from speaking, but it wouldn't do anything for the gunshots.

Why would we want to use silence on our gun? I thought the assassination plan was to disguise ourselves as a skaven then kill the gobbo leader; wouldn't we want to attract attention?

Look mate, I get you're worried, but have some facts. Guns don't have the range of bows in WHFB, but they do have quite a bit of range. Since we have time to line up a shot, and have a reasonably good dwarven gun, so our effective range is something like 20-80m, for a human sized target. A headshot is probaby hard at that distance, but again, all the time in the world to aim the shot and make it count, as well as being able to brace the weapon. Take no Heed is used on approach, if needed, and after switching our mien with Doppelganger to escape. Again, if that turns out to be the way to get gone, rather then just becoming an invisible shadow, and fucking off.

It's not meant to hide us while we are firing, that's an entirely different spell, one we don't know.

The targets are well illuminated, and over a pit, so we have long, clear firing lanes, and warrens to escape to after shooting. It's risky, but if the Goblin is a Leader, and it seems to be, based on warpstone and armor, then that's a big deal. Goblins losing a leader are even worse than orcs losing one, especially with an army pressing on them.

It is risky, but it is exaclly the kind of risk Mathilde is built to take. That doesn't mean it will work, or we get out for sure. We could die here. But that is true in any battle. It's a calculated risk, a decent risk, for good rewards.
Honestly it might be a good idea to enchant our gun at some point with a spell to make it silent when it fires.
This is true. And something to be considered the next time we have enchainting as an option.

What do people think of this addition to the assassination vote?

I quite like it. It might mean we aren't spotted, immediatly, in which case Mat can just get spotted running away further away by choice. More confusion is probably better, and it's the kind of thing Eshin might do.

EDIT: Dead Goblin + running rat should be incriminating enough, even if we don't get seen with smoking gun in hand. It might mean more Skaven get away however. But I'd trade that for better chances for Mat. However, it might be trying to do too much for Mat's skill level with guns. Hmm. I'll leave it out, but people can vote as they wish.

[X] You've scouted this area, now...
-[X] To the Temple of Grungni, to check if the holy place remains undesecrated.

Time to be unpopular.

Okay guys, this idea is both dangerous and unnecessary. Even if we pulled it off, it wouldn't disrupt anything. These are merchant equivalents for their people; they're expendable. Let's keep our eyes on the prize and do what we came here to do.
