It was a very helpful infodump!

Alright, so the Bellossom question is basic Gloom research. Everything else checks out okay, nothing too terrifying or worth diverting over....

I suppose with sleep powder as a low probability we come back to the 'hit it in the head with a big stick' theory of capture, or the electrical paralysis one. I suppose sleep powder would be okay if we were able to be issued a lot of it.

What other info, if any, do we need before talking to Silver and Leaf again? Finish the geographical survey so we can plan a route?

Actually, I'll go ahead and put that in as my draft vote. Subject to revision.

I'd also be fine with talking to Silver and Leaf this round. I want to talk to both of them before we talk to Professor B, so that we can use their info to add to our questions for him.

So, to get back to the Oddish capture plan, does anyone have objections to keeping the plan to look for an older Oddish, not a younger Oddish, Oddish in evolution, or Gloom? Given the latest Joy info.

It's too bad that we don't have anyone that has an Ice type. Then I would suggest putting a pavilion up to block the moonlight while using a series of ice blasts to lock it in place and starve it in the ground. Or just use the frozen dirt as a makeshift pot.

I'd say look for a stronger/older Oddish, with weaker/younger Oddish being a possibility if we get really unlucky and don't find any good older ones. Not one in evolution, though, or a Gloom.

For actually wearing it down (...) well, if we can't use toxins to poison or paralyze it, or tranquilizers to put it to sleep, we're only left with burning and freezing. Both of those can be pretty crippling-- though maybe less so with Oddish? Probably should've asked what level of injury Oddish can bounce back from. :V Ah well. Even with status afflictions being hard, it's still going to be in a bag. It occurs to me that we may really need something to muffle its screaming, though. The canvas bag won't do very much for that. Hrm (...) even if we somehow manage to get foam around the Oddish in the bag, that will just soften any damage that we can do to it, even moreso through the steel mesh bag. If we could reliably use passive damage, we could've just used a collapsible box with acoustic foam lining and waited for it to do its work, but without that we need to work directly and quickly.

(...) Wait a second. Why didn't I think of this before. I already suggested once that we could opportunistically catch an Oddish that's in a hibernating state after severing its leaves, but-- why don't we deliberately make it sever its leaves? Do the plan as before, but once it's in the bag, tug on its leaves until it severs them, wait overnight to be sure it's started hibernating, then expose a small part of it and touch the pokeball to its body to catch it.

We'll need to dig a bit deeper to account for it pushing its body in deeper after severing the leaves, but I don't think it can go down more than a few inches-- it starts off no deeper than a carrot, its rotund body and thick, rounded feet aren't at all designed for burrowing, and I think its leaves need to be mostly exposed to the surface for it to uproot itself. We'd also have to wait a week afterward for it to regrow its leaves, and we should try to time it for later in case it has trouble regrowing them due to an extended period in the pokeball. Otherwise, I think this might be the most foolproof plan possible in this scenario?

It's too bad that we don't have anyone that has an Ice type. Then I would suggest putting a pavilion up to block the moonlight while using a series of ice blasts to lock it in place and starve it in the ground. Or just use the frozen dirt as a makeshift pot.

Too likely to kill or cripple it, I think. Otherwise, this might be a pretty good plan. I especially like the makeshift pot bit. :V

I am really hoping we can requisition some sort of paralysis taser. That said, we only need to touch the pokeball to its body, right? Bag, restraints around bag, touch pokeball to it's foot?

If Oddish got dizzy we could turn it upside down.

Paralyze it through electricity sounds like a good idea
Freezing it seems like it might damage/cripple the oddish.

As for tugging its leaves off... Those oddish will be weakened and basically useless after capture for awhile. It will be a minus score on our exam result, i think.

So in that line, go for oddish with good enough stats/condition, it doesn't necessary have to be younger or older.

My insticts are screaming at me that if we don't keep a weather eye on them, social events are going to move on apace and bite us in the arse. We should probably coordinate with silver and leaf nowish, to lock shit down and coordinate prep. Also, after asking Silver to work with us, we should work with him.

Sounds good. Older Oddish as the goal, younger in a pinch.

burning and freezing.
Also electroparalysing.

Severing the leaves should probably be a last resort, as crippling as it is. That said, digging to expose a small portion of its body and ball it is probably the best way. Not onl are its leaves where most of the danger probably happens, that maximises the extent to which it stays restrained.

It's a Grass type that lives underground. It fairly sure has decent resistance from electrocuting.
quite likely, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was at least more susceptible to that than sleep powder.

Actually, I wonder if there's any sort of disorienting or deafening intense sonic effects we could get access to. That might be anothe thing we could tack on top.

I think @Chopak is probably right about electricity resistance.

I buy moving on social now rather than later.

Does Oddish absorb nutrients through its skin? If so, we could put it in a small tent, get some aerosol form of sleep powder, and spray it until it goes sleepy.
Was thinking of immersing it in a liquid form but that would take too long. Physical contact is probably a no no due to its poison.
What if we put on gas masks, trapped it in a net, then beat the shit out of it until it's unconscious? Would show dominance and not have to rely on who knows how much sleep powder/serum.

Oddish is resistant to electricity. Electrocution might work, but it will take a long time, and it might scream and attract the notice of predators.

The idea is that older Oddish will probably have better stats than younger ones. Won't always be true, and it's not what we should focus on, but it's a perfectly natural trend.

I don't believe that an Oddish is weakened by severing its leaves. It's weakened by the evolutionary process, which it starts by severing its leaves, but that process takes longer and is obviously quite stressful in itself. It's possible that the Oddish will be weakened if we leave it in the pokeball for an extended period while it's trying to regrow its leaves, but I already pointed out that we should avoid that, and if we pick out a strong Oddish it'll still be stronger. Beyond all that, a stronger Oddish is just a headstart that helps make up for having to go into a deathzone; a weaker Oddish still lets us become a trainer rather than failing or getting killed. Otherwise, it's only out of commission for a week. A week isn't long at all in the grand scheme of things. We'll probably have about that long to recover from surviving a deathzone as a matter of course (before they start seriously discussing our first assignment, that is).

I also doubt that we'll be scored on how strong the pokemon is afterward. I think all they care about is that we get the pokemon and that it can recover to full fighting fitness eventually. The joey that Leaf is planning to catch is totally going to take a lot longer than a week to grow up enough to fight, after all. Even if I'm wrong, I think worrying about a high score on an exam over actually passing it is having one's priorities in the wrong order. The Safari Zone is a deathzone. Any kind of passing will be passing with flying colors, and if we need to take a penalty to maximize our chances, I think it's a no-brainer.

EDIT:

My insticts are screaming at me that if we don't keep a weather eye on them, social events are going to move on apace and bite us in the arse. We should probably coordinate with silver and leaf nowish, to lock shit down and coordinate prep. Also, after asking Silver to work with us, we should work with him.

Hm, yeah, that sounds pretty convincing to me. We should probably hash out our plan before the vote turns over, in that case. I'll put my change of vote at the bottom for clarity.

Also electroparalysing.

Severing the leaves should probably be a last resort, as crippling as it is. That said, digging to expose a small portion of its body and ball it is probably the best way. Not onl are its leaves where most of the danger probably happens, that maximises the extent to which it stays restrained.

Tbh I'm not completely convinced that electrocution will work like that. It doesn't irl. :V In any case, Oddish should be resistant to that, too, so I don't think it's reliable as far as tactics go.

I already mentioned my doubts that severing the leaves would be crippling-- since the only reference to it weakening the Oddish is when it's in the process of evolution, which is another thing entirely-- and also that I don't think worrying about the Oddish being weakened should be our priority compared to maximizing the actual chances of capture. I also don't think that we can depend on the leaf-severing only as a last resort, since it's a plan that's hard to pull off if anything goes wrong. If the Oddish pops out of the dirt at being electrocuted or damaged, for example (in a vain attempt to run away), it probably won't just go back in.
