[X] Explore the Hospital: They won't really let you leave until you're given a clean bill of health...well physical health anyway. Better they don't know about your...problem, else they start asking questions you can't answer. (???)
[X] Go play with Chester: He is your friend after all. (Improve Chester SL)

Alright, so playing with Chester is obvious, however the Visit vote is tied between Olly and Volkar. So I'll go ahead and roll 1d2. 1 is Volkar, 2 is Olly.

Volkar it is.

Day 29
Visiting: 38 – 25 (GE) + 10 (The Dice Are Kind) + 20 (SL Level) = 43 Success

The trip to Volkar's room isn't an easy one.

First, there's the fact that hospitals are always built like mazes for some reason. Second, you're still hurting from the fight, resting against a wall at times to catch your breath. And thirdly, this condition of yours constantly makes you forget where you were going in the short term. You have double back and ask one of the staff for directions twice before you reach your destination.

As you approach, you notice that someone is standing outside the room with their back against the off-white door. They lift their head when you get close enough, revealing Barbara's worrying face. That worry soon disappears at the sight of you, replaced by a warm smile and wave, "Hello, Howard. Feeling better?"

You wave back before stopping a respectful distance away from her, "Hey, Barbara. Much better, thanks for asking. Mind if I go in and talk to Volk?"

She shakes her head, "No, except that he's not in the room right now."

"Oh," you feel the wind drain from your sails a bit, "Is something wrong?"

"The doctors took him to a CT scan," the worry returns to her face as she looks at the floor, "They wanted to check to see if there's any 'anomalies' in his body because...well, you know."

You nod in understanding. Despite his wounds, Volkar was moving around just find last time you saw him. And if you noticed, the doctors did too. They want to check on Volkar to see if there's anything "special" about him. You can only hope they have the best intentions.

A couple minutes of silence passes and you come to a realization; You haven't really talked to Barbara. She's usually by Volkar's side 24/7, her own choice from what you can see. Meaning that you haven't had much chances to talk to her one on one. Then again, you're kind of busy with everything else, and talking to Volkar tends to equate to talking to the whole family.

But this is your opportunity to get to know Chester's Mom as a person! You can't pass this up.

"Soooo," a hand goes to the back of your neck as you search for something to say. Barbara simply stares at you with a small smile on her face. You rack your brain for a bit, before blurting out, "how did you and Volkar meet anyway?"

You immediately regret asking when you see her face turn a shade of red, and look back at the floor. She starts to fiddle with her navy blue dress revealing her sudden nervousness at your question.

Crap that was too personal. You should've just asked about the weather. Every conversation starts with the weather! Quick, change the subject!

Just when you're about to speak again, Barbara interrupts, "W-we met during a raid on our old pack. We-"

Now it's your turn to interrupt, "Hold on, you had a pack?"

"Of course," she turns to face you while lacing her hands together, "most of us are born into one, and very few make it alone nowadays. Me and Volkar were put in charge of defense while everyone else went on the attack. Gave us a lot of time to get to know each other."

"I imagine it did," you lean against the wall with your shoulder while crossing your arms, "So, did anyone actually attack you two?"

"A few did," she places a finger on her chin while looking up at the ceiling, "Nothing we couldn't handle. There were a few close calls, but Volkar and I had a habit for saving each other. Watching him fight three werewolves at once just to impress me was very sweet...."

She sighs wistfully, swaying on her feet while remembering days long past. She realizes that you're still there, shaking her head to regain focus, "But I shouldn't say anymore. At least, not without Volky around."

"You sure about that?" you say while raising an eyebrow, "I'm sure he wouldn't mind."

She shakes her head, "Sorry, Howard. But the subject is very...personal to us. It's...not something one can tell without the other. You understand, right?"

Hmm, looks like this is as far as you're getting for now. Still it's your first glimpse of their life before they ended up living near you. Makes you curious about the rest of their past.

Like where do Chester and Maeve fit in? Did they come before or after they left the pack?

Suppose you'll have to wait till Volk comes back to know the full story.

Which reminds you, "Oh by the way, I meant to ask Volk this, but since he's not here....well..."

"Of course," Barbara nods, "Whatever it is, I'll answer as best as I can."

"Thanks," you reach into a pocket and take out the business card that Mark guy left you, "You see, yesterday this guy came into my room talking about Mages and-"

You look up from the card and face to face with Barbara.

You jump back, tripping over yourself and starting to fall backwards. You reach out for the wall...or at least you think you do. But, of course, your condition acts up, causing your mind to grab the wall in time, but your body takes too many extra seconds to follow up.

You hit the floor on your butt, making you grunt in pain. Thankfully, you kept a firm hold of the card so it didn't go flying out of your hand.

You look up at Barbara, who has her hands in front of her mouth again, "I'm sorry, Howard! I didn't mean to startle you like that."

You wave off her concern while picking yourself up, "It's fine, it's fine. I just didn't expect you to react that way. Is something wrong?"

Barbara starts to fidget again, gripping the hem of her skirt while biting her lip. She's silent for a time before finally speaking, "Just....be careful, Howard. I know very little about Mages, but what I've heard....isn't good. If they approached you, especially after what happened last time....watch yourself."

You're about to ask her to elaborate, but the way she's acting makes you drop the subject. She really doesn't want to talk about this, and probably has given as much information as she'd dare to.

That's....not comforting.

...What have you gotten yourself into?

(Barbara SL increased by 1! Gained info on Harrowmonts' Past! Gained some suspicion on the Mages!)

Chester Play Date: 62 + 5 (Human Form (Child)) + 5 (Trust in Me) + 10 (SL Level) = 82 High Success

"Ana, why are we on the roof?"

You turn back to look at Chester as he walks up to you. He's hugging himself, crinkling his white t-shirt. His blue jeans are torn in places, but you see evidence that it was done on purpose. He keeps looking to the left and right, breathing not even labored from walking up so many stairs.

Good. He's gonna need the energy for what you're going to do.

It was rather easy to get to the roof of the building. All it took was riding the elevator up to the 4th floor, finding the stairs that led up here, and using your powers to unlock the door. Granted a few humans did try and impede your progress, but a few altered memories fixed that.

You didn't change anything too serious.

Only the parts about them seeing you or Chester heading this way.

Father won't mind.

As long as you don't tell him, obviously.

"Didn't I tell you, Chester?" you skip over to him, hands behind your back as you do, "We're here to play together."

"I get that," he glances behind you, hands moving up and down his arms, "But, why are we on the roof for it?"

"Because, if we played anywhere else, we'd get in the way of the medical staff," you skip around him, stopping only when you reach the edge of the roof. You look up at the sky and take a deep, satisfying breath of fresh air.

"Ana! Be careful!" you hear Chester shout behind you.

"Calm down, Chester. I would be in no danger if I were to fall. I will simply slow my body to the point where I would safely touch the ground," you hop back from the edge and twirl over to the boy to place a finger on his forehead, "Though I'm sure you'd catch me long before that happened."

A nervous blush suffuses his face as he takes a few steps away from you. He coughs into his hand to clear his throat, "S-so, what do you wanna play, Ana?"

You smile, "I was hoping we could do some 'roughhousing'. Or in clearer terms, I would like to spar with you."

"Oh, alright then," Chester starts stretching, "Let me just get ready and then-"

You count down from three as your request processes through his brain. When you hit one, he yells, "Wait, you want to do what?!?"

You roll your eyes, "Not you too, Chester. Has everyone willingly forgotten what I am?"

"But, but why?!" Chester walks closer to you, his brows furrowed in panic, "Why here? Why now?"

"Because my well meaning but foolish father is going to keep putting himself in danger, for my or other's sake. That's not an opinion, that's a fact," you walk over to the entrance door, then lean your back against it. You look up at the sky, your vision easily piercing through the clouds to see the darkness, emptiness of space beyond. The lights of thousands of stars dance across the black expanse, constantly winking in and out of existence as you continue to speak, "One thing you all seem to forget is; I am no human. I am no ordinary mythic. I am an Eldritch being that has come from the stars, reborn once again to grow until I mature into my full splendor. I am older, wiser, and stronger than any mythic currently on this planet. If I were to use my full power, everyone within this city would die."

The sight of so many stars calms you to the point you slide down the door until you're sitting on the ground. You wrap your arms around your knees, "I am quite capable of defending not only myself, but my father as well. Yet, he continues to choose to put himself in danger when there is no need to. Not that I do not appreciate it, but even I have my limits. There is only so long I can watch my father get hurt while I can't do more than support him from afar."

"But what about you?!" Chester's shadow falls over you as he places two hands on your shoulders, "What if you get hurt? Don't you think I-I mean your dad would feel the same way?"

"Chester," you stand up and lock eyes with the wolf boy, "When my father gets hurt, he is put in this hospital for five days. If I get hurt, I can heal myself immediately. My body is malleable, his is not. While I may be inexperienced, my powers can make up much of the difference. But they are still weak and growing. As such, I need to become better at fighting and defending both of us. Especially in this form. I need you to teach me how to fight without the use of my powers."

You hold up a hand as Chester is about to speak, "Before you ask, your family wouldn't help me. Their hatred of the Eldritch runs too deep. They couldn't look past it, even for me. You, on the other hand....well, you'd certainly help your friend, wouldn't you?"

The hurt on your face is enough to make him waver in his position. Just one more push should convince him. He looks you in the eyes, "I-I would but....but if you got hurt then I....I don't know if I could...."

"Chester," you gently move his hands off your shoulders, step forward until you're looking up at his face, then place one finger on his chin, "I'm glad you're worried about me, but which is better? Me, unable to use my powers, my back against a wall, and at the mercy of whoever has taken me hostage? Or, me, unable to use my powers, my back against the wall, but I have the skills you taught me to defeat the enemy?"

You're exaggerating, of course.

You'd never allow yourself to get into a situation where you can't use your powers.

Nor would you ever allow someone who wishes you harm to get that close to you.

But, Chester doesn't need to know that.

His eyes fight you for a few moments more, before he sighs and nods in defeat, "Ok. I'll help you. But, you have to promise that we'll stop if it gets too dangerous."

"Of course," you smile, spin around until your back is facing Chester, then hold your arms out to either side, "I was thinking we could start with holds from behind. Could you grab me under my arms?"

"Alright," Chester loops his arms under yours then pulls upward. Your feet quickly leave the ground, showing that the boy's thin body bellies his real strength, "Like this?"

"Perfect," you struggle a bit to make sure you can't get out easily, "Now, I believe you are supposed to do this whe-"

Before you can even finish, Chester moves both his hands to the back of your head and pushes your chin down. He's skilled enough to make sure there's no pain but you can see what he's getting at. Like this, there's no way you can headbutt your opponent. In addition, his elbows have closed around your arms restricting your movement more than ever.

"Dad says this is called a 'Full Nelson'," Chester spaces out his legs for better balance, "It's primarily to subdue opponents, or pushing them to the ground."

"I see. And how do you escape?"

"Well, first you need to raise your arms and grab the inside of my wrist."

"Like this?"

"Yeah! Now just...."

You learned quite a bit from Chester that day. No one came to bother you, so you practiced as much as you could. By the time it was over, your arsenal of techniques had grown substantially.

You also started to wonder what exactly Chester's father was teaching him during their training.

Because some of those holds were obviously meant to be used on other mythics.

Curious.

(Chester SL Increased by 1! Ana gains a New Perk: Self-Defense Training (Novice): Defend Yourself! (+10 to all physical Combat Rolls))

You're return home is...pretty uneventful actually.

No real fanfare, no crazy monster lurking in your house while you were gone, nothing like that.

Mr. Weston simply picks you up at the hospital, drives you home, drops you off with Ana, then drives away.

You open the door with a click and take a deep whiff of the smell of your house. Then you let out a long, grateful sigh as Ana sits on the couch and begins to read. You watch her with a smile, while you go to the bathroom to take a shower.

It's good to be home.

Even if we aren't teaching anymore, we should check on the kids.
And we should keep using Ana's learning speed to read more while she's in this stage. It won't be long before she slows down.

You know, unless I'm reading things wrong, it looks like Ana will mature into a teenager at around the same time as Crossroads will be fully rebuilt.

Bummer. Ah well, still plenty of time to make Fan-Art of Anæster.

Also, never expected my vote to be the most popular of the bunch. Thanks everyone!

[X] Ask her to introduce you to Isha and Mathew: They're your daughter's Cultist. You should probably get to know them. (New SLs. Can start Ordering Isha and Mathew)
[X] Read the Journal: You really don't want to do this, but how else are you supposed to prepare? (Learn more about Anastasia and the Supernatural)
[X] Check on some of your students: You should make sure they're Ok, and not traumatized by the news (???).

[X] Read a book: The best way to gain knowledge on just about anything. (Anastasia will look through your collection of books and read one on her own. May result in new Perk.)

Hey, I just caught up with this quest.

Looking pretty good! Little disturbed to think about how Ana got to the stage of development before 'infant'. Were hordes of children fed to her too?

Of course not.

Not only does that eliminate potential Cultist, but it also makes your group looks worse.

To get worshipers, you need people to actually want to worship you. Eating children tends to do the opposite of that.

The being that was killed didn't seem too aware of itself. I just assumed it would eventually turn human-ish after enough lives.

I doubt it was thinking in terms of PR, particularly.

it's an eldritch
we cannot truly comprehend them with our mortal minds
though I believe that it was hoping to gather enough power by consuming the kids to create an item or ascend one of its cultists to act as an anchor for it to enter the world in its full glory.

That being was a Lesser Eldritch that followed Ana to Earth because it was Hungry. It really didn't know any better.

If it had gotten more powerful, it wouldn't turn out like Ana.

It would become a giant, black hole that had only one purpose: To Feed.

My thought process behind it, was for it to represent Hunger. The type of Hunger that can never be sated, can't be ignored, and will eat/absorb/destroy everything that it comes across.
