Preamble || Author's Message

Hello! It's been a while, SV.

I apologize for my absence lasting what must have been months; my activity on SV, SB, and other platforms was limited due to personal circumstances. I can't promise to be as active as I used to be, and can't even promise I'll devote a significant amount of my time to this Quest. Updates will be sporadic and irregular, but I can most likely keep to a one-update-per-week base, if not more often.

Forgive any mistakes on my part, as I haven't done this in a while.

The Quest will seldom use rolls or statistics of any kind, and most events will be the outcome of the narrative and of the players' choices.

This Quest will be part-sandbox, part-linear; I have a fair chunk of the setting and characters prewritten, and I intend the protagonist to encounter some of them regardless of circumstances at one point or another - call it fate. I also have an idea of how the plot might go, because, as I said, this is part-sandbox, meaning the ending is in large extent up to the players.

Overall, the end goal of the Quest is to figure out how to stop the Adversary and to do so. For this, the players will have to fight the Adversary wherever he appears and to seek information on how to deal with him permanently.

Good luck!

Prologue
Savior, Meet Your Adversary

###
"Little soul, soft, wandering guest and friend of the body, you'll go now pale, hard, into bare spots and you will not play, as you usually did."
A space tinted black. The infinite void stretched forever in every direction: up, down, left, right, forward, backward, and in directions that do not exist in the spectrum of human understanding.

In this space, you could turn three-hundred and sixty degrees left and still not make a full circle around your own axis.

A small wisp of blue, metaphorical, only a false depiction of the soul lying underneath, existed in this space.

"Hello," something didn't say. There was no air to vibrate, no light for eyes to receive. Whatever spoke didn't speak. "You have probably realized already, that you are dead. And as of this moment, you are wondering if I am God, or some other adjudicator who will have the say of where you go."

The soul didn't speak back, but weakly radiated an emotion. Remorse, sadness.

"Don't worry, you are not in trouble, and I am not God. Not in the way you understand God, but I am similar enough to make this work."

The soul was confused but didn't speak back.

"There is a world, far away from here. One that its people call Gaia."

The little soul became excited.

There was a hint of unbiased neutrality in its next statement: "Its people are headed for destruction. Oblivion approaches in the form of an Adversary, who will do anything in his power to destroy it, and every plane-parallel, and everything else he finds. He shall not rest until oblivion is inflicted, and on the way there, he will lie, cheat, and use subterfuge. He has many forms, and he shall do whatever is in his power to make the people suffer and to grind them into nothingness."

The soul shed a single wave of fear, like a metaphysical gulp. The reality pulled it out of its reverie.

"The gods are too busy squabbling, fighting each other in an eternal war for a world that may not be there when they are done in the nebulous future, all of their resources dedicated to battling one another. You cannot rely on them, even if you may petition them for indirect aid. The world requires some other form of salvation. A hero. A Savior."

Something else began to exist next to the soul. A spark in the empty space of the infinite void, existing in one point, so small it may well have been a single atom on the backdrop of eternity.

"You can be its Savior, if you desire, little soul. All you have to do is reach out."

Eagerness, offering. The soul radiated these emotions at the voice, with a vague hint of dread. Anticipation, nervousness.

"Then let your new life begin."

The spark spread out, from one point, to consume the backdrop of eternity, as the soul felt itself solidify.

Its resonance changed, thrumming with intent across every layer of existence. It became accustomed to leylines, a new world with new spiritual layers that caused it to swell and grow, gain new functions, become a part of some strange network of collective spirits. In mere seconds, it was done reconfiguring itself, and began to execute the second part of its arrival.

Phantom sensations of limbs being formed, of abstract thoughts returning to the bud of a new brain. Filaments of blue light wove to form a new vessel and...

Character Creation

"Do not forget, for even a moment, that the Adversary knows of your presence. And he will plot to get rid of you, Savior. You must be prepared for his Coming. Every step of the way, from the beginning until the end, he will try to trick and tempt you - don't let him. And above all: trust no one."

Character Creation [Vote by Plan]
[] (Plan Name)
-[] Character Name - name, easy enough.
-[] Gender - are you a man or a woman in your new life?
-[] Backstory - some (100-500) words detailing your old life. Include anything relevant, like hobbies, significant relationships, and important traits. Including death is optional.
-[] Appearance - description or picture. If you're choosing "Reincarnation," including the post-reincarnation appearance is mandatory and the pre-reincarnation appearance is optional.

-[] Insertion Method - how do you start out?
--[] Direct Insertion - describe a location, a rough image of its politics, and appear in a location the closest to your description; gain basic knowledge of details upon arrival. Will appear in a manner that isn't flashy and attention-drawing; for instance, delivered via carriage with the cabbie 'remembering' picking you up. Feel free to get crafty with choices, such as, "the royal academy of a human kingdom, delivered via a carriage for newly transferred students."
--[] Summoning - you were summoned by someone, be it a mage, or a member of some royal family needing a token for dealing with some problems. Describe who the summoner is, what function they serve, whom they have connections to, why they summoned you and using what methods, and if they put a cute slave collar on you (obedience-compelling ritual optional.)
--[] Reincarnation - be reborn into a family of your description, can be opulent or influential but the first years of your life will be spent dawdling. No memory of previous life until puberty, at which time memories slowly appear. Full memories regained by age eighteen, but no guarantee of emotional connection to them. Unlike in the other two, your body is changed, but gender stays the same. You can also select a non-human race using this method.

-[] No Cheat - "Onward with majesty, honest effort. Fighting the Adversary with a sacred method." - start with no cheats; a clean game where you do not have any advantage over your fellow man, other than memories from your previous life and vague meta-knowledge about the Adversary's existence.
-[] Cheat: Game Break - "Clever one, to try it small. Foolish still, to try at all." - skill, weapon, status; powerful, but not unattainable by ordinary means, at the cost of complications later on.
--[] Game Break II - "Twice the power, twice the trouble. One mistake, and you'll pay double." - start out with two cheats, at the cost of severe complications...
--[] Game Break III - "Triple strength, triple threat. Triple risk, triple debt." - start out with three cheats, at the cost of severe complications and a heightened difficulty level.
--[] Game Break IV - "Adding power without worry. Releasing power to make you sorry." - start out with four cheats, at the cost of extreme complications and a heightened difficulty level.
--[] Game Break V - "A push for more, a craving for power. A sweet desire, which'll soon turn sour." - start out with five cheats, at the cost of extreme complications and an insane difficulty level.

--[] Game Break EX - "All the power for maximum gain. All the chances for maximum pain." - Take as many of them as you like, Savior. As many cheats and weapons and abilities as you desire. Why fuss about it? If your power is infinite, surely, nothing can defeat you, not even me?
Warning
: Death is a ridiculously high and very real risk in this scenario - even as soon as the first updates. The forces of darkness will conspire to put an end to you with exceptional force, and the Adversary will outright ignore other potential targets in favor of destroying you first and everything else second. To survive will take resourcefulness, let alone to win: take this only if you want a thrilling but very challenging story. Also, despite what the text says, it's very ill-advised to take more than ten cheats.

Cheat List - these are merely examples, feel free to customize as long as you keep to the same general power-level. They should start out by putting you at, "above mere mortals," and have options of growing beyond that.

---[] Heroic Might: Start with the body, mind, and soul of a demigod. All statistics: physical, mental, spiritual, are raised to above peak-human and will develop up from there, and develop much faster.
---[] Supreme Warrior: Start with an instinctive knowledge of combat technique. You learn combat thrice as quick, and specific styles five times as fast, in addition to other perks.
---[] Supreme Rogue: Start with an instinctive knowledge of sneaking and deception. You learn how to steal, spy, sneak, and lie six as fast, in addition to other perks.
---[] Supreme Mage: Start with an instinctive knowledge of sorcery. You learn magical theory thrice as quick, and spells five times as fast, in addition to other perks.
---[] Legendary Tool: You gain ownership of a magical sword/bow/spear/staff/etc. For example, if you pick a sword, it starts out as a blade sharper than any other, disregarding the laws of weight and inertia (in your favor,) but gains more power with time. Can be given a single trait/element, such as 'Fire,' 'Holy,' 'Draining' or 'Vorpal,' etc. Describe the weapon/tool/object and its properties.
---[] Scion of the Divine: Describe a deity in your own words; the closest deity to that description will become your spiritual guardian, transferring some of their essences into you to make you a quasi-god. Actual effects vary depending on deity, but expect to begin with anything a paladin/cleric of that deity might start with and end up as a demigod.
---[] Natural Clairvoyance: You have been gifted with a package of minor psychic powers to help you. You can see through walls with closed eyes, hear things in other parts of a city, and tune your senses to various layers of reality, in addition to scrying across vast distances and perceiving abstract situations and states as real things you can read; such as seeing others' pasts, futures, or desires. These - although extraordinary - are separate from proper magic, and do not require mana.
---[] Natural Polymorphism: You have been gifted with a package of minor shapeshifting powers to help you. You do not require to eat, drink, or breathe, and your need to rest is greatly decreased. Mundane diseases and toxins do not affect you. On top of that, you can freely add or remove biomass from your body and reshape it to look however you like, including monstrous creatures. Your custom bodies can have their own abilities, but they must be semi-physical in operation. This requires very little mana.
---[] Blessed Existence: Fate offers you the tastiest of its threads. Luck and fortune smile upon you on most days, leading to auspicious and helpful events and drawing you away from harm's way. Unlikely events may occur to save your skin, but don't expect this to always get you out of trouble - you still need to work to win.
---[] Write-in.

Character Sheet
Name: Lazara Lightbrook
Gender: Female
Aliases: The Savior, Shining Maiden
Savior Core: Pure

Traits:
- Guiding Light: Lazara spent her previous life as the caretaker of a lighthouse, never straying too far from its reach, and always guiding sailors to safety. High bonuses to all spells and magic conceptually related to: "light," "photons," "brightness," "rainbows," and smaller bonuses to all related concepts and fields. Especially if it is supposed to aid another, or be used for divination/clairvoyance. Her memories of her previous life allow her to construct diffraction and refraction devices, lenses, and other physics-related devices meant for affecting visible light, which includes light-based communication systems.
- Inquisitive: Lazara is naturally inquisitive. She will try to obtain more information for general knowledge and events when plausible and will do so in a more efficient manner. She is hesitant to approach issues with little data.
- Trickster: Lazara has been instilled with a sense of cheating, unfairness, and how to take advantage of others. She is good at lying, concealing her intent (socially, environmentally, and in combat,) and performing combat moves relying on trickery and wit. She is also more skilled at mid-combat banter and taunting, dividing her attention, and to a lesser extent, acrobatics.
- Stealthy: Lazara is skilled at the arts of stealth, but in more than one way. She is better at concealing her presence, but also camouflage (environmental and social,) and has a good sense of how to go around people's cones of visions, or stalk just outside of hearing range.
- Dirty Fighter: Lazara will use anything to her advantage in combat. She might bust a rock over someone's head, kick a barrel down some stairs, or blind you with light and slash your face. Either way, this girl didn't come here to play fair.
- Enlightened: Lazara is enlightened and in tune with her own soul. All forms of magic: physical, mental, spiritual, become easier to learn and more instinctive to learn and modify on the fly. She is no longer as limited by her own affinities. Gains the equivalent of eidetic memory and extrasensory perception, because she can access her soul's senses. In addition, she can use Conceptual Magic, specializing in the concepts, "love, calm, hope, healing, life," but capable of handling others.

- Savior: Lazara has awakened to her true nature. Extreme bonuses to staving off the Adversary's influence, and imbuing a similar protective effect in her spells. Can damage the Adversary directly using this trait, if you find the right method. Bonus to "righting wrongs."

Lazara, then known as Lily, was an apprentice and then caretaker of the Azurion Lighthouse.

Her hobby was studying the way light would reflect and bend when passing through glass, and she would eventually craft a system by which the Azurion Lighthouse could display different colored lights, for various signals. She would never travel more than 100 miles away from the Lighthouse. Between living in the nearby town as a child and sticking to her duty as caretaker, she simply never wandered that far for her 43 years of life.

Death came due to losing her footing in a storm at the top of the Lighthouse and plummetting into the sea where she would drown.
Insertion Method - Reincarnation:

Born into a Noble Human Household, Lazara is the younger of two siblings, her older brother, Timory is being groomed to become the next Lord of Lightbrook, an agriculture-focused province blessed with more, and brighter sunlight said to carry healing properties. The current Lord Pholion Lightbrook busies himself with the task of managing his province and teaching his young son the tricks of the trade, while his wife, Lady Deavina teaches her daughter the ways of Nobility.

Well, I wasn't expecting a literal gangster.

Still, as long as you fight the Adversary, it's eligible.

The idea of a gangster's second chance to success just appeals to me.

And goblins need love damn it.:rage:

Depends what kind of goblin we're talking about. Reincarnated As A Slime & Goblin Slayer can be considered the two opposite ends of a sliding scale. Reincarnated has stuff like Goblin Bros, whereas Goblin Slayer is the example I'll use when having a breakdown insisting men are irredeemable perverts.

[X] Plan Nerdpole Architect
-[X] Character Name - Riley Baumann (Sofina Montacris)
-[X] Gender - Female
-[X] Backstory - A civil engineering student at MIT, Riley spent much of her studying hours getting distracted by sandbox building games and models of realistic fantasy castles. She could only be brought back on-track by her best friend and chronic overachiever, Elizabeth Sutherland. Riley grew up playing the rough-and-tumble knight to her best friend's prissy elegant princess, and the two tended to balance each others' worst traits. Unfortunately, neither of them were good at de-escalating, something that proved fatal when Riley drunkenly stormed out of Elizabeth's apartment after an argument and straight into oncoming traffic.
-[X] Insertion Method - how do you start out?
--[X] Reincarnation - You were born into the noble family of Montacris. While counts and countesses by lineage, a few generations of strategic marriages, good investments, and underhanded methods have lent your family wealth and influence far beyond that implied by their title (as well as a questionable reputation). By extension, they have sent all of their children thus far to the royal academy-- including you, their third child and first daughter. Your mother was loving before she passed, instilling in you a lifelong appreciation for art and geometry, but your father was always distant and demanding, only becoming moreso after he remarried. You must excel, for your father will show no mercy if you don't. (In your dreams, you remember a loving family in a world where you could build cities on a screen and a best friend who is the spitting image of a scion of a rival family, Amelira Capulisto.)
-[X] Appearance - description or picture. If you're choosing "Reincarnation," including the post-reincarnation appearance is mandatory and the pre-reincarnation appearance is optional.
-[X] Cheat: Game Break - "Clever one, to try it small. Foolish still, to try at all." - skill, weapon, status; powerful, but not unattainable by ordinary means, at the cost of complications later on.
---[X] Adventurer's Conjuration - You have been gifted with the natural ability to conjure objects. At your most basic, you can shunt objects into an abstract inventory and retrieve them at will, ignoring such mortal limitations as weight limits and carrying capacities. At first, your abilities are limited to inanimate objects that you can hold, and manipulating your inventory requires time and concentration (particularly as it grows larger); however, practice and experimentation may loosen or even remove these restrictions. You can also create simple objects using only the necessary raw materials, as well as copies of any object that has ever been in your inventory and any object you can create from memory or with your own skills. Eventually, you may learn to imbue objects in your inventory with certain properties, such as immense durability or unnatural physics.

This isn't really my best work (I'm usually not great with completely open write-ins), but I hope it gives a decent amount to work with on all angles. Pretty much everything is negotiable but the cheat, really. I strongly considered one of the existing cheats (a lot of them are really interesting), but I've had this idea in the back of my head for some time and I'd like to see it come to life somewhere. Basically, our protagonist will use RPG inventory, crafting, and building mechanics. :V

EDIT: Welp, that's the last time I try using imgur's built-in BBCode link copy thing.

Not at all, but do keep in mind your life - as well as the fate of the galaxy - is as tense as a violin string that has been stretched to its maximum length.

I'm exaggerating, but still, Adversary is out there. You should be fine if your master is a good fighter and/or politician, though.

MY POWER IS MAXIMUM

--[X] Game Break EX - "All the power for maximum gain. All the chances for maximum pain." - Take as many of them as you like, Savior. As many cheats and weapons and abilities as you desire. Why fuss about it? If your power is infinite, surely, nothing can defeat you, not even me?

---[X] Heroic Might: Start with the body, mind, and soul of a demigod. All statistics: physical, mental, spiritual, are raised to above peak-human and will develop up from there, and develop much faster.
---[X] Supreme Warrior: Start with an instinctive knowledge of combat technique. You learn combat thrice as quick, and specific styles five times as fast, in addition to other perks.

Writeins - Yes, these could be considered flaws.

---[X] Passioned: You will be unshakable when involving things that you are passionate about, benefiting your ability to do, learn and think within those fields.

---[X] Battle Lust: Start with an aptitude for battle and desire to get into fights. The more battle lust you have, the more dangerous in battle you become, the more you want to fight, creating a feedback loop that will increase your battle strength over and over during battle.

Wanted to post more but phone. Just interested to see a DBZ like fighting.

Post under construction

*Pokes through pics folder* ... Yeah, not feeling anything really.

*Shrug* Couple of pics almost felt like they would work, but then I realized one had panties showing that I hadn't noticed before and neither were quite pushing me past that threshold to actually want to make a vote.

Beyond that I have a small smattering of pics that might work for companions and a couple that might work for the Adversary. If the QM's interested in such anyway.

Also depends a bit on how much fantasy or magi-tech fantasy this setting is.

Had a power idea though:
You can see a being's personality as an Aura around them. You have a knack for figuring out which each [color/scent/sound/taste/etc.] of an Aura means and how they fit together. While these Aura's can be hidden if one truly knows how to do such an esoteric thing it is impossible to truly fake. Any falsehoods in Aura would require the user to oevrwrite their own personality, causing flaws where the fake meets with the real, or completely re-write their entire being, looking entirely fake for being too "neat."
Alternatively if spirits exist in this setting then we can see small, small spirits (think Mushi from Mushi-shi if you ever saw that) that acts similarly. Giving us a reading on various things about that like if they've killed, are they rich, how lucky are they, are they crippled at all, are they frequently angry/sad/happy, etc. Again, can be hidden, but not really faked.

Aura-reading? Pretty cool; I especially like how it extends to senses beyond sight (always thought that was more interesting than auras that were just colors or symbols), but as written it seems limited and lacking in growth potential compared to the default example cheats. In fact, I feel like it actually works best as an extension of Natural Clairvoyance, which already has a line about "perceiving abstract situations and states such as others' pasts, futures, and desires"-- feels pretty natural for it to also include general personality. It doesn't mention at all how such abstract ideas are presented, either, so that would be an interesting way to fill that gap.

[X] Plan: Beggar King From London
-[X] Character Name - Morris Hoddle
-[X] Gender - Man
-[X] Backstory - Morris was a jovial and affable fellow who thought of himself not as a Gang Leader, but as a community leader and in the rough and tumble streets of 19th Century London His community is the homeless, the sex workers, alley toughs and the street rats. The sort of folk that people more well to do look down on. Morris did what he could to organize them, bring them together and help them recognize their worth. From the lowest retch to the shiniest conman London, they knew and respected Morris. He took his share, and spread it about so his people could live well. As such, when folks tried to displace him, they had to be made an example of. For the good of The Community, of course. People liked to call him 'Beggar King of The East End' He lived 49 years. for the sort of folk he was, well and long, until the Spanish Flu took him and half the his east end with it. His final thought was the regret that he had no way to help all those trapped behind the quarantine with him.
-[X] Appearance -

-[X] Insertion Method - how do you start out?
--[X] Summoning - When Amenafora the Drow, and Wizard of 127 years had begged the Great Spirits of Magic for a King to Save her down-trodden people, To bring together the bickering Clans of Monsterkind in the ever-gloomy citystate Of Shadowmoor, against the Imperialist Hegemony Of the so called 'Kingdoms of Light' and perhaps, one day, have a land where they were ruled by Monsterkind, For Monsterkind. She had hoped for an Old Drow King Reborn, or a Great Orc War Chief, or even the Mythical Goblin Lord. What She got was Morris Hoddle. A Human, who was a self proclaimed Community Leader. The Years of Sacrifice and Time that went into the Ritual couldn't be undone, she had checked five times, she had made no mistakes. This was their Hero. She hoped she was right.
-[X] Cheat: Game Break II - "Twice the power, twice the trouble. One mistake, and you'll pay double." - start out with two cheats, at the cost of severe complications...
---[X] Scion of the Divine: The Sovereign of Chaos and Charm, The Shadow, And Lord of All Thieves. The Trickster is a god of the underdog and the rulebreaker. The Paton of Guile and Clever Solutions. They reward Heroes and Rogues in equal measure. A God of Transformation and Innovation. Liberation and Debauchery.
---[X] Supreme Rogue: Start with an instinctive knowledge of sneaking and deception. You learn how to steal, spy, sneak, and lie six as fast, in addition to other perks.

Is this cool?

EDIT:
Now, above is from the point of view of how Amenafora sees things.

She's the Elf Equivalent of an 20 something angry rebellious college grad. Listen, Shadowmoor is a great place to be, if you're not a human being. It's also the only place they're allowed to be, Technically. The City State of Shadowmoor is a Vassal to The Greater Confederation of Kingdoms aka The Kingdoms of Light, which arose roughly 800 years ago after a Hero King (Who might have been an insert themselves??) defeated a Dark Lord. All the Forces that surrendered to this King, be they Goblinoid, Orc, Drow, Teifling, Changeling, or Vampire, were sent to Shadowmoor. It's essentially a Reservation. It has it's own laws, and even its own government, but it's one that's Ultimately subservient to The GCK. As such, tax and trade favors the GCK far more then Shadowmoor, it's people getting less while the GCK gets more. Our Drow is a part of Rebel Subgroup that wants to Over-Throw the Standing Government and replace it with something that has teeth, perhaps even taking back land that by all rights, belongs to the peoples of Shadowmoor.

[X] Plan Rebel Mode
-[X] Character Name - Connor Weaver.
-[X] Gender - Man
-[X] Backstory - Connor was, during his 19 years of life, the black sheep of his family. Unlike his brothers who excelled in art, music, dance or studies, Connor only stood out as the only person to go 15 times to the director's office in less than a month. Although it is not as if he cared what his parents thought of him, he would live and die on his own terms, without worrying in the least about the approval of anyone. Even if that meant dying in an illegal motorcycle race.

-[X] Appearance

-[X] Insertion Method
--[X] Summoning - A Linch, a necromancer sorcerer who was able to use his spells on himself to anchor his soul to his rotten corpse, is currently cornered and badly wounded due to a group of Heroes that came to stop his plans. In a last act of hatred and resentment against life itself, the Linch carries out a summon spell that will bring a powerful being of another dimension at the cost of his immortality. He has no control over the creature, but if the beast he invokes is as powerful as the forbidden books mention, then there are few things in this world that can chain his will.

-[X] No Cheat - "Onward with majesty, honest effort. Fighting the Adversary with a sacred method." - start with no cheats; a clean game where you do not have any advantage over your fellow man, other than memories from your previous life and vague meta-knowledge about the Adversary's existence.

I like it!

Believe or not, a hobo was one of my first choices. That, and playing as a young haunted nazi solder.

But the idea of a scummy gangster corrupting the local youth in a fantasy world was way too appealing.:V

[X] Plan: Beggar King From London

Tally ho lads! Maximum British mode activate!

[X]Plan: Shining Maiden

I want a no cheat plan, but I also want a female protag since they're uncommon here. This fills both boxes

Edit, that said, Nerdpole Architect is pretty cool too, so I'll approval vote for it if allowed @Birdsie
