This has nothing to do with that. This is about actually becoming an Astartes.

I'd argue it's relevant. How we become an Astarte will to some degree define the type of Space Marine we'll become. Chapter serfs provide a varied information pool from us to pull from, they do a variety of work for the Chapter and don't have the luxury being full blown Astartes forcing them to compensate in other ways. I'd argue it provides a grounding experience for us, respecting danger that "mere mortals" can present.

A Chaplain, especially a Black Templar Chaplain, would probably slap us for wasting his time. He's there to see to the spiritual needs of the Chapter, not to resolve every petty dispute and argument.

[X] Chapter serfs.

The 'stupid mortals' thought really showed we need to be reminded that non-Asartes have value, can't really be motivated protect Mankind if we assume them to be useless.

Also wondering if Reynauld had another neophyte who called himself Sigismund who he was very proud of until the neophyte was killed in battle by a stronger opponent, and now is training our Sigismund exclusively in combat to ensure it won't happen again.

Doubt it, as the bloke's anger doesn't really give hints of sorrow.

'Sides, he doesn't seem Tsun enough :V

IIRC aspirants who fail the Black Carapace implantation phase after passing the rest go on to be Chapter Serf if they don't die, right?

I would have preferred the Chaplain vote, but it didn't get any traction. Still, I'd rather this than go looking for books. That doesn't seem like a very "Black Templars" kind of thing to do.

That's right. I'm also interpreting the fluff that serfs include neophytes who failed any other stage of implantation, aspirants who failed their trials but survived, and the odd human family that's been taken in and the children born into serfdom.

Also, there's a character sheet below the OP now.

[X] Chapter serfs.

There's bound to be a few utter badasses that were just unlucky enough to reject the last stages of the gene seed willing to teach us the knowledge and skill we need.
