The White Company - Humble Beginnings
The White Company - Humble Beginnings

Anselm Voss, a Voice of Reason,
wasn't just the leader of a company of mercenaries seeking fame and wealth, under the service of Oron the Merchant, holding the fort at an important crossway by the shores of the sea of Melor. No, he was much more. He had learned it with the hissing of the Kobolds' arrows against his face, he had learned it in the thick jungles that hit the damned beasts. He had learned that no company could march without knowing where the enemy is. If there's one thing they learned, it's that scouting ahead always yields results.

And now there they were, a group of nicely outfitted guards, getting paid their single gold coin a day, thirty gold coins a month, with an added bonus for hazard pay if they risked their necks and rescued caravans besieged by bandits. Or, actually, a flat percentage if they brought back to the city (and to Oron's large purse) the wealth of the merchants that had so unfortunately lost their lives before their arrival.

It was, indeed, the kind of thing that decided one's path.

[X] Getting hired to do our job means doing our job. No ifs or buts.
[X] We shall strive to protect the merchants who are under attack.
[X] We shall strive to protect the merchants' wealth once the merchants are unfortunately dead.
[X] We shall strive to outpace the bandits ourselves. They cannot steal what has already been heavily taxed, after all.

The company at the moment counts ten individuals, all equipped with studded leather, bows and arrows, short swords and small bucklers. Light, yet effective.

Anselm Voss is the same, but he has a longsword and a metal shield. His helmet sports a green and yellow plume.

- respectable citizens by day moonlighting as thugs by night sounds fun. Getting tired of my heroic PCs.

Edit: also eliminating the competition!

We only have ten dudes. We need a bigger company before we start going above and beyond or moonlighting and still meeting our real obligations.

The White Company - You get what you pay for - Month 1

Anselm Voss was many things, but he was not the kind of guy who'd go beyond, above or below the contract as written. The contract was clear, and so too would his actions. Still, the eager people below him needed a bit of training. He wasn't that much better himself, and thus it was with a heavy heart that he put his hands around his purse, and dimly realized that in life everything costs money, even experienced trainers.

He did succeed in getting an old veteran to teach a trick or two, but that came at a heavy cost; there would be but onion soup and hard bread for lunch, dinner, and breakfast.

The White Company - Month 2

It's been a month. A month of eating onion soup and biting onto hard bread. But now everyone's looking forward to this month's pay, and to the promise of once more getting fully digestible food in one's gullets.

The month's events, though, they are a bit harder to digest. It was mostly a good month, barring the onion soup and the hard bread, but midway through a stroke of incredible luck had the company feel elated at the prospect of being tasked with guarding an incredibly precious shipment -with extra pay on hand- only to then see another mercenary company take the task in their stead.

Still, the month ended on a high note, with a round of beer offered by the innkeeper for having successfully apprehended a thief attempting to escape with the day's earnings.

However, there are some troubling things that have caught the leader's ear.

The question is, what will he do? (Pick one)

[X] Perhaps it would be time to get in touch with other fellow mercenaries. Friendship between colleagues makes the workplace nice.
[X] Perhaps it would be time to get in touch with the local trove of Adventurers. A friendly adventurer is a powerful friend.
[X] Let's try to show off how good we can be to the local economy, and the merchants.
[X] The Law is the Law. Let's get to know the judges.
[X] The only power that matters is the Boss, so let's try to make him friendlier.
[X] The People. There's many of them; better to find friendship in numbers.
