A Vampire's Tale (BtVS)

[X] Search for an unoccupied building, heading in the direction of your old graveyard in case you don't find one.

I am all for going to our old apartment, but in the evening, not shortly before dawn when we urgently need shelter.

[X] Search for an unoccupied building.

We need to go by our parents' place and our old apartment tomorrow night, but it's too close to dawn right now.

We don't know how Sara's parents will react to her presence, and we don't know what state our old apartment is in.

Normally it takes a while to get apartments back on the market after a tenant leaves, but this is Sunnydale. People die and disappear regularly here. The landlord might have tenant turnover down to an art form for all we know.

You're not sure if the place is still yours, or if somebody new has already moved in, but you did have an apartment all to yourself in Sunnydale. Not the biggest or most glamorous place, but it worked well enough for you. You hurry along the streets as the sun starts threatening to appear over the horizon and make it to the complex just in time. Lacking a key and panicking a little bit, you go for the expedient method of smashing a hole through the door to gain entry. You feel greatly relieved that you're able to cross the threshold.

Looking around, it looks the same as it always has. Guess no one has come and cleaned the place out yet. A thin layer of dust is on the surfaces and your carpet needs vacuumed, you think to yourself inanely. Do you care about that kind of thing anymore? You're not sure. You leave the pair of cleavers you took with you on the kitchen counter and toss the animal blood into the fridge. Then you take a nice, hot shower and ponder your existence. Simple enough goals like "get food and shelter" are, momentarily at least, fulfilled. So now what? Do you seek gainful employment? Do they hire vampire accountants? Maybe you could work the night shift somewhere.. or maybe there's some role in the supernatural you could find. Hunting other vampires and demons? What do you want to do with your immortal life? You ask yourself these questions as you jump out of the shower and put on some actually fitting clothes this time.

This won't be a permanent solution to your shelter crisis- your parents will be here for your stuff at some point, and somebody else will be renting the place eventually as well. But there is something inherently relaxing about the familiar surroundings of home. You find yourself gazing longingly at an old photo of you and your best friend Katie in college. You don't talk to each other so much nowadays, but back then you shared everything. Well, she got married and you didn't- maybe it was only natural you'd begin to drift apart. You're a bit too relaxed, because it takes you a moment to realize there's a disconcertingly familiar face leaning against your dining table.

"Sara, my childe."

"..Luke."

It's the smarmy bastard that killed you. You knew you shouldn't have walked home with him that night, but you were lonely, and he was charming.. alright this is sounding real cliche. You guess you should've watched more horror movies. He's wearing a long-sleeved black shirt with a v-neck and a necklace- the same outfit he wore the night he turned you. Guess he's not big on fashion variety. But how did he know you were here? Did he simply guess you'd return here?

"I apologize for not being there when you rose," he says with a remarkably sincere tone. "I had some pressing business elsewhere to take care of."

You want to chop his head off and rid the world of one more monster, but you see the value in diplomacy and respond neutrally. "No problem." Really, if he could keep having other pressing business, that'd be swell.

"Usually I'd be the one to take you out on your first hunt, but I can see you've already fed. Glorious, isn't it? It's always the ones closest that taste the best." He gestures toward the picture frame in your hand. Does he.. think we killed her? You decide to play along, nodding vociferously, but not otherwise adding any other words of comment. He smiles indulgently, so you think you made the right response. He straightens up.

"It's time for you to meet the rest of the family.. Come, we will return to the cathedral." He beckons you to come with him and starts leaving without looking back to see if you're following.

It's very clear he expects you to obey, and you're really not sure if you're in any position to say no. You rate your chances of killing him to be quite low. On the other hand, if all you're trying to do is escape, that should be doable. But would that simply be putting the confrontation off until later? While he's bossing you around almost without thought, he seems to hold some level of regard for you. Because you're his childe? Do vampires form families? It frustrates you how little you still know, and this could be an opportunity to learn more about other vampires. Walking into a nest of vampires sounds dangerous, regardless of whether you're a vampire or not.. but who knows?

[] Attack him.
[] Follow him.
[] Run away.
[] Something else?

[X] Run away.

All our options are bad, but at least this option doesn't lead to exhausting moral crises about being offered delicious murder victims. The problem is, what if he can track us with vampire magic somehow?

Really, though, going with this guy's never gone anywhere good before.

[X] Follow him.

Need to know more, and remember sunrise is close. Just running away could be very dangerous. If there are no victims at the cathedral, then great. We can learn some stuff and vanish on Luke tomorrow night. If there is a victim there, then what do you think is going to happen if we don't show up? At least we could try to help them.

In other news, best friend Katie might be someone to turn to when we get the chance.

This is all very true, and this vote makes me nervous because it seems like every choice is DOOM. What tipped the balance for me is that avoiding graveyards and other vampire nests as much as possible seems like a good way to avoid vampire hunters.

On the other hand, we might burn to death. This choice, agh.

We're in season 1 of Buffy. Luke was the Master's minion who he made his Vessel and told him to drink enough blood to free him during the Harvest. Buffy dusts Luke in season 1 episode 2.

If we follow him we're probably going to meet the Master.

If this Luke is the Master's Vessel then Sara's oddity as a vampire is likely to be due to some mystical purpose of the Master who may not actually realize what exactly was done to new childe mindset. Luke being made the Vessel and the child into the Anointed one were all to help the Master escape the prison so a more human-like vampire could be as simple as drawing in more prey or if Sara has a soul perhaps greater capacity for mystical arts.

- Not actively, though. He seems like he just left and assumed we would come with, so we can plausibly stall in here for a while and blame it on being a new vampire. If he doesn't check on us, then we can make our own way in town.

Pity that we can't justify approaching Giles yet in-character, and strictly speaking we don't actually know that he's here yet - what's our best guess at the date? Jenny Calendar might be, though.

Oh, I like that plan a lot more. Especially since it's going to be daylight soon. We can report in later! We will definitely do that (never).

I hope that plan works.

In hindsight, it might make sense to get out of Sunnydale for a while. If things follow canon, and we haven't done anything to change them as far as I can tell, Luke will be dead shortly. The Master will be dead by the end of the school year.

Ehh. All we need to do right now is stay alive, without killing anyone, until Buffy takes care of Luke*. We don't know when that's going to happen - all we have to go on is that Luke is alive. We're probably not too far behind the start of canon, since that would be work on the author's part without any real gain. But in the longer term, we do have an obligation to use our new vampire powers in the defense of the innocent.

*which we might be starting to butterfly now, depending on if we're taking over a vampire that Luke sired offscreen in canon, or someone he just ate in canon. Well, really, our behavior would be changing his either way, but not significantly at this point.

We do have an obligation, but we don't have to stick to Sunnydale. Sara could head to Los Angeles or San Francisco for a couple of months if she wants to lie low. We could still help people there, and we might make some contacts for the future.

I don't think leaving town is very likely though. We had that option earlier and didn't take it.
