If the pc could actually cast i'd be all for the linker core because it'd maybe be possible to use that stuff to search and mine for luxuries like gold, platinum, rubies or diamonds and maybe even facet or purify them.

But the device is broken and we don't have a sympathetic TSAB contact.

Actually since the device is a asshole, it's also likely that it's lying. The reward has to be something after all. It also hinted that it can give us a knot that will get the pc to the nahoha dimension (which i guess would mean nahoha's earth, which can be useless if she's not famous yet).

Being in the red isn't that big of a deal as long as we have a safety cushion.
Up to six weeks. Alice is trying to do some forward planning and stretch that out. She doesn't want to rely on some magical solution, excuse the pun. She also may be panicking about living alone.
Eh, PC doesn't know how to manage her time it seems if she can't even do that much in a week.
Let's focus on one before moving on to the other since we'll get better results that way.
This was her very first job. The last line about getting used to it wasn't just for show. The shock of getting a new job applied a penalty across the board for the last update. This meant no dice were rolled so no big successes/breakthroughs.

I will try to squeeze out the next update in an hour or so, no guarantees though. Vote locked.

[x] Practice the Belkan language

The next week and a half goes in a blur. You opt to solely focus on one task this time. Namely learning the alien language of Belka. This seems to please Metatron greatly.

The Belkan language superficially sounds like its German but mechanically it's not. It so isn't.

Metatron also teaches you the differences between Ancient and Modern Belkan.

"Why do I need to know this?"

Because I say so. Now temporal drift has caused this word to now mean-

After several days you are able to understand specific phrases and hold halting conversations. You must sound like those recent Asian immigrants with broken English, at least your vocabulary has increased.

Ability Improved: Belkan Language Comprehension [Level 1 => 3]

Metatron seems grudgingly impressed by your progress.

It seems to be taking a more diplomatic approach, hinting that you may have better uses of your time in the future.

You think it is trying to say that you should quit your new job. You are still on probation, so you can leave without hassle. You are unsure if he has something planned or what. It could just be him being mean-spirited again.

One day he brings up world walking, which is a surprise as he hasn't mentioned it in a while.

You should consider trying the new knotwork diagram I have created. Place me on top of that CD implement. It should work, if it doesn't you'll just get a bad headache so no loss there.

Bastard, you think to yourself.

Using your ability is our best chance of new opportunities and conducting repairs on myself. A quick scouting run would minimise risk.

It also exposes you to more danger. Who knows, maybe next time it will be an even bigger snake. Like a basilisk. Or maybe savage cannibals. Maybe there won't be any humans at all and you'll encounter dinosaurs. Resulting in being eaten by a T-Rex.

Well, our demise is not in his best interests, so we could at least try.
But if he wants us to quit the job, he just has to offer something more profitable. And be more helpful in general. Perhaps then we'd have more time to devote to our joint goals. If there are any.

He said he'll reward us if we master the language. I prefer to take this down early on.

Plus if we get it done soon we might impress it to the point that it'll be more amicable to us which also might occur if we tell them the name we gave it is from Judeo-Christian mythology. Also just realized that Metatron is a device like from the Nanoha series.

It used to be our fathers AI, surely it's not going to betray us or is straight up lying to us? Maybe its just pissed because he got left alone in a drawer for years.

You devote all your free time to the single minded pursuit of learning Belkan. The unwavering display seems to even unnerve Metatron who suggests taking some time off for entertainment. You disregard the amusement park tickets and keep learning, and practising.

It pays off, as soon you are able to hold a conversation with Metatron without embarrassing yourself. The device even appears proud, though it does its best to hide it. You still don't know how to write Belkan very well, and your reading could use improvement but speaking the language is manageable.

Ability Improved: Belkan Language Comprehension [Level 3 => 6]

You've done it. In three and a half weeks you have a decent grasp of a new language. You are unsure how useful it will be as no one on Earth speaks it but it does seem to make that stupid bracelet happy.

"Now where's my reward?" You hope this wasn't for nothing.

It's still in the mail.

"What's coming?" You don't want to be out off, you want some concrete details.

You should expect some letters in the mail. I have created opened some accounts and linked it to your email.

"I have an email?"

You do now.

"How did you do all that?" Don't you have to go to a bank and sign a bunch of paperwork?

Acquiring money is no problem for a primitive world like this.

"Where are you getting all this money from Meta?"

Don't question the magic money tree Alice.

You roll your eyes.

Earth money: effectively unlimited.

You realise that all your monetary concerns have effectively been solved. With magic. You no longer have to work! The question is, should you though? You don't want to be a bludger. You also have this other ability to explore - new worlds! - and a new skill to train. Also... with all the money you can buy all the things! Though you should probably exercise some care.

A huge mansion would draw too much attention maybe we can buy one of those insane luxury apartments. We also need good security and guns as right now we could die to a knife much less a gun. If we want to go explore worlds we need to be strong enough to survive it and until we get magic or gene enhancement tech we cannot risk it.

We primitive worlders call this credit fraud.
Then again, we have a lot of worlds to choose from if legal issues ever become a problem.

I think we could buy something for self-defence? Or even just plain travel? A bicycle, a backpack, a compass, and other such things that might come in handy when exploring worlds when we don't land in the middle of some town.

Linker Core magic is one of the best means of self defense out in the multiverse. We were mentioned to have a Powerful core(so A rank and up), which means that once we learn the basic spells 101 we have:
-Barrier Jacket, a full body defensive forcefield which is also a hazmat suit and a spacesuit. You can literally do orbital insertion with this. It looks like an elaborate but otherwise normal outfit, so unless we choose something weird we can walk around with it up for hours.
-Basic Shooter, a dialable yield optional lethality magic missile. It also doubles as a lamp.
-Basic Shield, a short duration directional barrier which can block quite a lot of damage.
-Flight, Not hard, just takes power, which we have. Gives you the aerial maneuverability of a VTOL fighter jet.

All of which are at a 1-2 second cast time.
What we need then, before we leave would be:
-A backpack to keep stuff.
-Food and water rations for several days
-Sleeping bag and tent
-Spare clothing and toiletries.
-Small amounts of precious metals or gems which should have similar value regardless of where we go.

effectively unlimited money is nothing to sneeze at, but we don't want to get the tax man too interested, and I'm not gonna say that i'm 100% on Metatron's adherence to laws.

The gratification you feel when you leave the job is quite satisfying. It wasn't too bad in the end, you conclude. It would have become routine if you didn't have all this other stuff going on.

Though what are you going to do with yourself now? You feel a bit aimless now that all of your basic needs have been met. It doesn't help that the 'too good to be true' radar is pinging in the back of your mind.

You have a feeling that Metatron has its own plans for you. It's kind of obvious there's an agenda for all the blustering and ham-handedness.

You distract yourself by learning the maths behind Linker Core magic. The progress goes pretty well, and you chock your earlier trouble down to stress.

"Why am I learning this theory if I can't practice it?"

It's so that when you repair me you will have a good existing grounding to learn spells.

"But what if I don't manage repair you? Then it will be a waste."

It stays quiet, presumably sulking.

You are pretty sure this is a valid concern since if there's nothing on Earth that can fix Metatron, you are down to world walking and trying to hit a jackpot.

***

Through the lessons Metatron tells you about its other forms and various abilities you could perform once its fully repaired.

One of the most basic forms of magic is shifting into my combat forms. It doesn't even need a structured spell.

The enthusiasm on display is somewhat nice to hear and engaging.

You usually don't need much more than that. Just shift me into the power sword form and stab the enemy in the head until their face melts off.

You shudder at the very descriptive imagery.

"But I don't want to kill people."

You'll probably have to at some point. Or need to use it against dangerous animals or monsters.

The device is very blasé with the value of life. You get the feeling it is from a very different culture with alien values.

"I don't feel comfortable with this violence."

I thought your local entertainment media was all about gratuitously killing people in large numbers.

"That's… let not go there." That is not a discussion you want. Enjoying action movies does not make you bloodthirsty.

My power spear form will give you longer reach if theres an issue with being closer up.

"Metatron, there is a problem with this. I don't have any sort of martial arts or melee fighting training."

You'll learn. You will have all the time in the world eventually. Don't bother with any local teachers, they are amateurs who have not fought in life threatening circumstances. A pity your soldiers fight exclusively with ranged weapons.

"About that, what if someone shoots me?"

Just fly towards them and stab them in the face.

It says that like it's the most obvious thing in the world. You feel like you're missing some context.

I am exaggerating of course, anywhere in the torso will do. The disruptive energy field will do the rest.

And leave them dead or maimed, you think to yourself.

Your barrier jacket, once properly manifested will block most threats. I doubt an airstrike will do more than a scratch and toss you around. Though I will be annoyed if you stand still and test it out. Other device holders would be an issue though I doubt they would w-

"Is there a non-lethal way, what if I wanted to take someone alive?" You stop the tangent from going further.

I guess you could use my forms in an unpowered state and bludgeon them.

You glare at him.

Oh fine, concedes Metatron. I have some good ranged capability if you're queasy about close up killing, you just have to work harder for it.

He teaches you some basic ranged spells to round out your repertoire. Though with names that contain words like arrow, bolt and needle you are unsure about the utility. If they would drop a man without harm or make him drop from the debilitating pain of being skewered. Well you guess some kind of instant magical stun spell would be too much to hope for.

Metatron assures you that while you won't be a true artillery mage you would a decent facsimile of one in time. You just need to understand the theory to get to that point. While nice, it's clear he prefers close up fighting.

Ability Improved: Linker Core Magic Theory [Level 0 => 3]

You're in a bit of a rut now aren't you? Learning the fundamentals of a magic you can't use yet. You could take the risk and world walk or perhaps spend some money.
