---Unnamed Emmayda Imperial Scholar, 1st Epoch pre-Scourge, From Forbidden Secrets, Licentious Legends

Once upon a time on an ancient Earth, a shining city of magic and wonder shone for all to see. Blessed by the gods and scorned by the demons, it stood for many millennia. An unmatched era of prosperity and power, a time where Magic provided all with ease and comfort, graced the mortals of paradise. Songs were sung and Great Works were accomplished. This epoch of plenty ended with the arrival of the war-like forces of the Dread Emmayda Empire.

Untold suffering and strife accompanied these newcomers as they brought a war of conquest upon immortal and mortal alike. The magics of Earth were turned into powerful weapons of war. The heavens trembled and the mortal plane was torn asunder, yet the denizens of earth were not accustomed to war. The Emmayda stood on the precipice of total victory. This would not stand. Of unknown origin, two beings, known only as the Protector and the Destroyer, emerged.

The war turned immediately.

The mortals of earth found their salvation, the planetary wounds were mended. Armadas of Emmayda ships were slain, dozens of their worlds obliterated. Now, fighting a defensive war against an unstoppable force and an immovable entity, they moved in desperation. They fled the existential plane and enacted a spell to annihilate all magic in the hopes that it would destroy their enemies once and for all.

They succeed only in part. Magic was torn from the Mortal plane. Gods died, mages went insane without the Song, the Golden Age of Magic came to an end. The Shining City and all of the lesser creations of Magic withered and decayed. The true target of the horrific spell had their vessels destroyed, their minds driven to oblivion, yet the essence of the Eldritch Creatures survived. In hibernation, they merely awaited the return of magic.

The wait ends now.

A cadre of newcomers have come to Earth from far, far, away, and finally, Magic has returned to the modern day...

Awareness returns. Oblivion is swept away in a tidal wave of undulating energy. It is Life and Death, the Beginning and the End. Majesty and degradation. All things and no things. The palest shade of power thrums through your being, in an earlier time this wouldn't have equaled the meanest fraction of your capabilities, but it is glorious all the same. You do not see nor hear nor taste as the mortals do. Unbound by the flesh, you do not think or feel as they do. Still, your greater senses have been eviscerated and nearly eradicated.

In your decrepit and fallen state, you will need a vessel and soon. The thought of possessing a mortal form is disquieting... they always impose such strange thoughts and emotions...

That doesn't bear thinking about, not right now.

Even without corporeal form or true memory, you rise!

But, which Eldritch Being are you? (Only vote the name of your choice! :D )
[] The Protector
At the peak of the Dusk War, you mended the world and healed its besieged defenders. Pouring forth unparalleled magical abilities you made the Earth, the Sun, and the entire solar system an impregnable fortress. Entire fleets of the enemy were broken in useless assaults. With a steady hand and a stern word, you shepherded the mortals of Earth onto the right path. Under peerless guidance, Mortals once more walked in harmony with the Earth. More than anything, you protect the Earth from all of its enemies.
[] The Destroyer
When all hope seemed lost, you emerged onto the field. Mercilessly you visited desolation and destruction wherever you found the foe. The mortals learned the truth of war from your inspiring example. Many were transformed into creatures of war. A truly fearsome fighting force followed in your wake. You were the hammer and they the anvil. The enemy and their gods were driven back across the firmament. You laid waste to their worlds and shattered their Empire. At the heart of it, you shall destroy Earth's enemies.

[X] The Destroyer

The beings both seem to have three qualities to them, a main focus, a support skill, and a social expression.

It seems like the Protector's is Defensive Magic for its main focus, Healing for the support, and Guidance for the social while the Destroyer's main focus is Offensive Magic, Buffs for support, and Warleader as its social.

[X] The Destroyer

I like the description of the Destroyer over the Protector. It is also my personal preference for offence over defence that I choose to vote for the destroyer. I also like how the Destroyer is described as making those that followed them "creatures of war".

Well in any case, thread watched.

[X] The Protector

Anti-bandwagon, and also because at least in my head this feels like the choice that's less similar to other Maz protags.

By the way folks, I will let you guys in on a little worldbuilding information. The newcomers arrival has brought Magic back to Earth after a very, very, long time. They are few in number, but they boast significant magical power! As an aside, this Earth is basically Modern Day Earth with the serial numbers filed off (mostly to avoid RL politics from seeping into the story!).

Anyways, Magic is going to manifest for human usage in two very different ways. These are the paths of the Sorcerer and the Wizard respectively. The former draws upon their inner wellspring without a need for spellcasting to become stronger, faster, tougher, smarter, and their very presence can warp their surroundings in interesting ways. The latter requires spells and rituals to manipulate the magic of their surroundings. Such techniques are not easily learned, but they may be learned by the vast majority of mortals.

Almost as a rule, a Sorcerer cannot learn wizardry and vice versa. Think of it as music. The Sorcerer's own song renders the song of the world undefinable. Conversely, the wizard is deaf to their inner tune, but capable of conducting the external symphony with the right tools at hand.

What do the exceptions look like?
