Compassion Be With You (Young Justice Quest)

Because she's not there at the moment.

But Miss Martian isn't on mars and she doesn't talk in past tense?

It just feels really weird.

"There wasn't any pavement or floors, since we Phytognosts need dirt to walk on to absorb nutrients''
There wasn't any? That implies that there are at least some now.

''We had cities, but they were all dirt and grass covered and most of the skyscrapers were built into giant trees.''
We had cities? That implies there aren't any cities anymore.

''We had a planet-wide Internet, but even our tech was wood paneling.''
We had a planet-wide Internet? So they don't anymore? Even our tech was wood paneling? So it isn't anymore?

''Metal was pretty rare on Phyton B, though we had plenty of clay for ceramics, so I'm pretty sure the wood paneling was a cultural thing."
Metal was pretty rare? We had plenty of clay for ceramics? The wood paneling was a cultural thing?

I hope this doesn't feel like i'm nagging or something, it just feels really off to me.

[X] Train with Black Canary.

I agree that the past tense seems off but it is the author's story and whatever they want to do they are entitled to.

Chapter 2: Part 4
[X] Train with (one of the) Green Lantern(s).

You head over to the comm link terminal and place a video call in to the Justice League. Batman himself answers your call.

"Watchtower. Do you need something, Indigo Lantern?"

"I was actually wondering if I could train with one of the Green Lanterns, Batman," you ask, honestly a little intimidated to be talking to the goddamned Batman.

Batman merely nods. "One of them is free at the moment. I'll send him down." The feed cuts. Okay, training time!

-o-

It's soon that Hal Jordan arrives to oversee your personal training. He smiles as you arrive in the training hall. "Hello there, Indigo! So tell me... how are your constructs?"

"Well, Indigo Lantern Power Rings have trouble with constructs, but if we're in the vicinity of another color of Power Ring, we can copy their abilities through empathy."

He brings his hand to his chin in though. "Hmm... I see. So then... make a fist for me," Hal instructs.

You raise your squishy, plant matter hand and make a fist.

"No, no. A fist construct. It's a bit of a classic."

Oh! You raise your staff and try to imagine making Hal proud, then swing it. Nothing happens.

"Uhhh... Hey, what's your ring fueled by, again?"

"Compassion."

"And what did you think about when using it?"

"Um..." You brush some of your grassy hair from your face, feeling grateful your race doesn't blush. "Making you proud..."

He chuckles. "Compassion is more... sympathy for someone's suffering. Making someone proud makes them happy, but doesn't relieve their woe. Try thinking of something else, even if it's hypothetical."

You nod and try to imagine a massive monster attacking a group of innocent civilians, with a giant fist being the only thing to knock it away, then swing your staff. An indigo hardlight construct of a fist flies out, nearly clocking Hal in the side had he not thrown up a barrier construct in time.

"Huh. Your constructs seem just fine to me," he says, smiling.

You rub at the back of your head. "That's because you're here, so my ring and staff copied your ring," you admit.

"Still, not bad for a first-time construct. It took me weeks to get a fist that strong going." he praises.

You pull your grassy hair in front of your face, as if to hide. "You're just saying that..."

"Indigo, just take the damn compliment. Now, let's try something more difficult... How about a sword?"

You nod and again try to focus on another enemy. A shortsword is the only effective weapon against the dreaded Kicker of Puppies! There's a flicker of indigo light before you close your left hand around a glowing sword construct.

"Sometimes, blunt blows won't cut it, so you need to make a cutting edge with your constructs. It's a bit more deadly than blunt force, so use it sparingly," Hal advises.

You nod and dissipate the hardlight sword.

"No, bring it back. When it comes to making construct weapons, you still need to be able to wield them. That means knowing how. So summon it again and swing it at me."

You nod and summon it again, then scurry forward in an attempt to swing it at Hal. But the blade dissipates before it even reaches him, seemingly in response to your hesitation. Hal looked like he was right about to throw up a construct barrier, but stops when he sees your own construct vanish on its own.

"Is something wrong, Indigo?" he asks.

You sigh and scurry back away from him. "I... don't want to hurt you. I mean, I know you can take it, but..."

He nods. "Compassion can be a weakness sometimes... Just try to remember that by hurting one villain, you can save hundreds of innocent lives. That should override your hesitation enough to allow you to use your constructs and ring to harm, despite feeling bad for the villain you're fighting. Now, summon your sword again, and remember, this is just a sparring session. You won't actually hurt me." Likely to ease your worries, he summons a shield on his arm ahead of time.

"Okay... Thanks, Green Lantern."

He smiles at you.

-o-

After getting your ass thoroughly handed to you in a sparring session, you realize that the fact it was a spar is the problem. There's no one at actual risk, so it kinda all fell apart when Hal tried to have you practice defensive moves. Hal suggests you think up some mnemonics to get around your ring's inability to defend yourself, like you did for the offensive constructs. Considering you have a full eight to ten hours freer each day than most people... that's plenty of time think up some.

Well, you're covered in plant-bruises and you've still got quite a bit of daylight ahead. How you want to spend it?

For now i'l say this choice so that we have some practical healing tests.

Later I want to see something like this
[] To truly use a indigo ring to heal you need to find people in need of healing, ask batman to find hospital cases around the world that would benefit from universal healing.

or this
[] Ring scan for people in need of healing then teleport to the location of the most critical cases and heal them.

Chapter 2: Part 5
[X] Try to heal yourself with your ring.
[X] Hang out with a member of The Team, get to know them. [Aqualad]

Okay, heal yourself. Let's see... You raise your staff and try to imagine all the people you could help if you were at your full strength. Heal!

...Nothing happens. You try again, this time a more hypothetical situation of needing to be fully healed to tank a blow for an ally. Heal! ...Nothin'.

Indigo Tribe Power Rings are built on compassion for others. Healing cannot work on oneself under any circumstances. Your ring cuts in to tell you.

Well that would've been nice to know! Ah, well... You're a plant. You'll heal, but slowly.

Well, what else can you do today? Oh, might as well get to know Aqualad a bit. You wander around Mt. Justice, eventually finding him in the Grotto, getting ready for a swim in the water there.

"Hi, Aqualad!"

He glances over his shoulder mid-stretch. "Oh. Hello, Indigo Lantern. May I help you?"

You grin. "Oh, just figured I'd come over and hang out. About to go for a swim?"

He nods, his face stoic. "Yes. Would you like to join me?"

"Uhhhh..." Well, this is awkward! You wrap your arms behind your back, staff held horizontally at your waist, glancing away nervously. "Okay, we're teammates, so... full disclosure? I'm aquaphobic."

Aqualad cocks and eyebrow at you. "You are... afraid of water?"

"Well, afraid of drowning, actually. Boats, planes flying over water, heck even bridges over water make me nervous. I can't swim..."

"What caused this?" he asks, eyes widening. Yeah, you imagine that, to an Atlantian, the idea of being afraid of drowning to the point of being unable to swim is just... shocking. "If you're comfortable sharing, of course."

You sigh, nodding and slumping your shoulders. "My parents tried to teach me to swim... a little too early in life. I ended up nearly drowning, and I've been terrified of bodies of water big enough to drown in ever since..." You wrap your arms around yourself as if to give yourself a hug. "I don't even like baths... I'm worried I'll somehow fall and end up face-down in the water..."

That was a bit of a distortion of the truth. Your parents teaching you to swim too early? That was your last life. But when it came time to teach you to swim in this life, you adamantly refused to let your mom and mom do so. Some things just carry over between lives, you suppose...

Aqualad crosses his arms, a perplexed look on his face. "You're a plant... do you even breath like humans do?"

"Eh, it's kinda weird for us. We don't have lungs, per se, but we can get waterlogged and because of how we process oxygen it's a lot more difficult to recover from than a human just getting pruny."

"Do you breath in oxygen, or out oxygen?" he asks, suddenly curious.

You grin. "Oh! Common misconception. Plants breathe in oxygen and out carbon dioxide. They make oxygen through photosynthesis, and it's just that they make more oxygen through photosynthesis than they consume breathing," you explain. "So technically... We breathe out both!"

"Where does it, um... come out?"

"Technically every part of our body, but we can center it out the mouth if we want."

He brings his hand to his chin. "Fascinating... Oh, but more importantly, did you want me to give you swimming lessons, perhaps?"

You sigh, shoulder slumping again. "I'm afraid it's not quite that simple... You try to get me in the water, I'm going to panic. This is a phobia we're talking about, not simply not knowing how to swim."

Aqualad crosses his arms, sympathy in his eyes. "You might want to talk to Black Canary about this. Having a phobia of drowning will put you at a severe disadvantage on any nautical missions we perform," he explains.

You grimace. "Yeah... I guess I should... You've got a point."

"I actually need to get my exercise in, but if you'd like, we could at least give it a try later."

"Well, nothing ventured, nothing gained, I guess."

-o-

Well, that didn't exactly pan out. Five minutes of swimming lesson and twenty five minutes of sobbing against Aqualad's chest. Eesh. Well, what to do next?
